Scientists Discover Weird 'Falgae' in Cornwall That Are Genetically Unique

Scientists Discover Weird Falgae in Cornwall That Are Genetically Unique
The mesmerizing red algal species
Phymatolithon calcareum clumps together to form habitats called maerl beds in coastal regions across the northeast Atlantic, but researchers have discovered a pocket of the algae near Cornwall in the UK that s genetically distinct from the rest of the region.

It s been dubbed falgae , likely because of its location in the Fal Estuary – a busy waterway used by both commercial and naval ships sailing to and from Falmouth port.
These maerl beds are important habitats for many marine species – like coral reefs – and play an important role in the storage of carbon. The researchers are hoping that the new findings will help in efforts to protect these beds from numerous threats. ....

Study uncovers novel mechanism in rare mutation associated with Alzheimer's

Study uncovers novel mechanism in rare mutation associated with Alzheimer s
A novel mechanism has been identified that might explain why a rare mutation is associated with familial Alzheimer s disease in a new study by investigators at the University of Chicago. The paper, published on April 2 in the
Journal of Experimental Medicine, characterizes a mutation located in a genetic region that was not previously thought be pathogenic, upending assumptions about what kinds of mutations can be associated with Alzheimer s Disease.
Alzheimer s, a neurodegenerative disease that currently affects more than 6 million Americans, has been characterized by the accumulation of Aβ peptide into plaques in the spaces between neurons in the brain. These Aβ peptide are generated when a larger precursor protein, APP, is cleaved into smaller fragments as APP transits through different cellular compartments. ....

After decades of study, University of Queensland researchers have identified a genetic solution to the problem of sorghum lodging and falling down.
Lodging was when the stems of plants carrying high grain yields were weakened by loss of water, Professor David Jordan from UQ s Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation explained.
The problem affects 10 per cent of sorghum crops each year.
Losing a bumper grain crop because plants fall over is heartbreaking for growers and undermines efforts to increase production to improve food security, Jordan said. ....
