we'll be him, maybe someone else. but the next nominee of the party needs to be able to prove that they can win voters of color. i just wonder if you agree with that? and if georgia tonight makes that case very strongly? >> of course, and i think what you've seen in georgia is the work of someone who didn't win this time, stacey abrams, in building a network and bringing people into the democratic party that had not voted before. and raphael and john do the same thing around their state. so, that is a big piece of it. but we're also seeing across the country they are bringing in independent voters moderate republicans, particularly on and reproductive freedom where the republicans doubled down, so many of the people racing to the governor's office and state capitals on the republican side to see who could be the first one after the overturned roe v. wade to permanently ban abortion in their states. that was part of this election. and not just in georgia, but

earlier, who is one of those over 200,000 voters who went to the polls in november. they voted for brian kemp, but they did not vote for herschel walker. if more of them had, obviously we would not be in this situation. there would not be a runoff in georgia tonight. but this voter that i spoke with earlier who had voted for the libertarian candidate for senate back then actually went and cast his vote for walker this time around. he said it was a difficult decision. he said he made it difficult to look the women in his family in the face. but he wanted to cast his vote for walker because of the power balance in the senate. and he said that governor kemp coming out and stumping for walker and doing those fundraisers for him and cutting those ads for him is part of what factored into his decision. and he said he did not know if he would have voted for walker in this runoff election if he had not seen that show of support from governor kemp. and of course that was not a show of support that we saw during the general election. he and walker largely kept their distance from each other.

first, teams covering both the campaigns in georgia tonight, eva is with warnock, jeff zeleny is what walker. i want to start with you, eva. what has the mood been like in the final minutes here before the polls close? >> reporter: well, erin, i will have to say it seems to me from my reporting on the ground that senator warnock, we actually just saw him walk through here in the ballroom area just a few minutes ago and the campaign just seems swagger and enthusiasm going into the runoff than i witnessed four weeks ago. that was also evident among student organizers this week working with the campaign. they indicated to me they were more confident now. still, senator warnock expressing cautious optimism again this morning to his supporters. cautioning them saying listen, herschel walker still has a real path to victory here. and that republican voters tend to come out on election day.
