One Kentucky Derby qualifying points race was held over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, but there were a couple of other races worth looking at.
The points race was the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes from Fair Grounds in New Orleans, La., a 1 1/16-mile contest offering 17 Derby points to the top four finishers (10-4-2-1). While no winners of the Lecomte have gone on to capture the G1 Kentucky Derby, there are some notable successes in the not-too-distant past, including G1 Preakness winners War of Will (2019) and Oxbow (2013). Patiently handled by leading man Juan Hernandez, Legacy Ranch's Big Fish reeled 'em in late to take Saturday's $200,000 California Cup Derby at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., by 1 ½ lengths. Trained by David Hofmans, Big Fish got a mile and one sixteenth in 1:46.37.
A joint sixth, about four lengths off the lead going into the far turn, Hernandez bided his time, angled outside three sixteenths from home and Big Fish unleashed a powerful stretch kick to run down None Above the Law in the final sixteenth.

A prompt favorite in the Golden State Juvenile Nov. 7 at Del Mar, Good With People will try two turns for the first time in the $100,000 King Glorious Sunday at Los Alamitos
Named in honor of the winner of the 1988 Hollywood Futurity and 1989 Haskell, the King Glorious is restricted to 2-year-olds bred or sired in California. The race at one mile is the feature attraction on the final day of the Los Angeles County Fair Winter Thoroughbred meet.
The King Glorious attracted a dozen entrants, but only 10 will be allowed to start.

Hefty Pick Six carryover when racing resumes Thursday; Good With People among 20 nominated to King Glorious Stakes

For the sixth time in the first seven days of the Los Angeles County Fair Winter Thoroughbred meet at Los Alamitos, there will be a Pick Six carryover when racing resumes Thursday.
The carryover will be a hefty $145,797 as no tickets were able to isolate six winners for the fourth consecutive racing day.
Three upsets in a row by Next Flight ($26.80) in the sixth, Synthesis ($24.40) and Loud Loud Music ($19.80) in the eighth triggered another carryover.
The Pick Six will begin in Thursday’s fourth race. Post time is 12:30 p.m. and scheduled post time for the fourth is 1:58 p.m. The pool could reach $500,000.
