Direction Dreams: Tamil film industry is competing on a global scale, says Ramya Kalingarayar

When did you realise cinema was your calling?
I am a huge fan of Vikram and I kept a tab on his films and interviews. In one such interview, he said acting doesn’t feel like work as he enjoys doing it. That struck the first chord in me. I chose Viscom in college and then went to LV Prasad Film Institute to study filmmaking.
That’s when I made a short film and put it up on YouTube, mainly to share with my friends. After two weeks, I got a call from a journalist saying the video had gone viral and they wanted to interview me.

'The Falcon & The Winter Soldier' review: Mediocre writing puts paid to Marvel's admirable intention- The New Indian Express

Express News Service
After Thanos’ now-famous snap became the most defining moment of the franchise, Marvel, in this ‘post-Blip’ world is now once again in the process of creating new stories that are rooted in emotion and sentiment.
After the fantastic WandaVision, we now have The Falcon and the Winter Soldier that works better as a ‘larger than life’ story than it does as something relatable.
In a moving moment at the end of Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers hands over the mantle of Captain America to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) by giving away his shield. When Wilson tries it on for the first time, Rogers asks him how it feels, and he replies, “Like it’s someone else’s.”

'Thunder Force' movie review: A mirthless addition

Cosmic-ray blasts. Sociopaths-turned-lethal villains. Two friends taking on the supreme evil. On the face of it, this superhero film has everything going for it. But the interesting bits stop right there. Finally the only entertaining parts in Ben Falcone’s latest Netflix film, Thunder Force, are the leads—the talented Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer. Though billed as a ‘superhero comedy’, the fifth film from the husband-wife duo, Falcone and McCarthy, Thunder Force kind of warns us that we may be running dry on good superhero content. With its forced LOL moments, it is definitely not in the same league-or-half of The Incredibles or even Deadpool.

Transparency will rejuvenate the Tamil film industry: Assistant Director Ramnath

When did you realise cinema was your calling?
My fascination with the films began during my sixth and seventh grades. I would imagine myself in the shoes of the heroes. When I watched Rhythm, for example, I wanted to become a bomb disposal technician (laughs). Then, my English teacher told me how it was important to have a specific goal in life and I decided to make a career out of cinema.
What have you learned from your directors?
Ramesh Aravind sir, whom I’ve worked with the most, is my guru. He has played the lead in more than 100 films and has directed many films. When he is working as a director too, we have to control the crowd that wants to meet him. Despite this, he is extremely down-to-earth and easy to work with. Directors at sets are always under pressure, but he is very cool, even when working on a film like Uttama Villain starring Kamal sir, Balachander sir, and where even the junior artists are well-known stars. He also has a great sense of editing, so he shoots only what’s necessary. Shamdat sir was Uttama Villain’s cinematographer and when he directed the Mammootty starrer-Street Lights, I assisted him. He is known for his speed as a cameraman and that was true with direction too. And he wasn’t just quick, but had clarity as well, which is commendable. Dhilip Kumar too is very calm and cool. Even in his first film, he knew how to get the exact emotion from the artistes.

Monika Shergill & Srishti Arya Interview: 'We have heightened our focus on regional content'

Express News Service
Recently, Netflix released its roster for this year that comprised about 40 titles that ranges from films and series to documentaries and comedy shows.
The emphasis is on “more variety and diversity than we have seen before”. With its first major Indian series, Bombay Begums, and film, Pagglait, releasing last month, here’s Netflix India’s Vice President Content, Monika Shergill and Director International Films, Srishti Arya, in conversation with us, as they speak of plans and challenges.
Excerpts:
What’s the big difference in this year’s slate?
Monika Shergill: 2020 was great for us, and this year will be a big leap from where we were last year, in terms of story scale, diversity, and variety, given that we are opening up new fronts like documentaries and new comedy shows. We will also return to content that did brilliantly for us last year, like Jamtara, Mismatched and Masaba Masaba. We are confident that it’s a power-packed slate!

INTERVIEW | 'Tamil cinema can now compete with Bollywood', says Satizz Vijayan- The New Indian Express

When did you realise cinema was your calling?
It was all because of two films - Thavamai Thavamirundhu and Onbadhu Roobai Nottu - that I watched during my 12th grade. They really affected me and I wanted to get into the field right after high school. But my parents were not supportive.
So, I completed my degree and worked in a few BPOs. When I realised that wasn’t working out, I resigned and enrolled myself in a Visual Medium and Direction course. It took me four years to become an AD after completing that course.

'Tom and Jerry movie review: A rehash of old, barely funny comedy moments- The New Indian Express

Express News Service
Remember the age-old trivia that McDonald’s Golden Arches are recognised by more people than the symbol of one of the biggest religions in the world? This absurd fact seems plausible because we are involuntarily attracted to the logos, characters, and references that we grow up with. One such cartoon that existed before most of us were even born and will most likely still be around long after our departure, is the Tom and Jerry show.
The duo is so iconic that unless you were neighbours with the Flintstones, you’re bound to know them. When the trailer of the newest film adaptation of the cartoon was released three months ago, I wondered why they were taking the Space Jam route. Why opt for a live-action/animated hybrid instead of going completely animated like many Tom and Jerry films have since 1992? Just minutes into the new Tom & Jerry, it becomes apparent that the makers wanted to give us more than just slapstick humour.
