Junkyard Find: 1979 Ford Granada - The Truth About Cars

Junkyard Find: 1979 Ford Granada
Thanks to rental-car companies, the Granada was once seen in great numbers on American roads. The Granada remained a fairly common sight well into the 1990s, but they’re just about all gone now. We saw this Crusher-bound ’77 Granada Ghia in California last month, and I found today’s Junkyard Find in a nearby East Bay wrecking yard on the same trip.
One thing about junkyard Granadas (and Monarchs) is that the front brake parts always get grabbed by the first person to spot the car. That’s because everyone knows that Mustang guys will pay good money for these bolt-on-to-1960s-Mustangs parts.

Junkyard Find: 1977 Ford Maverick Sedan - The Truth About Cars

Junkyard Find: 1977 Ford Maverick Sedan
You just don’t see Ford Mavericks and their Mercury Comet brethren on the street these days; they haven’t picked up a huge amount of collector interest and their place at the bottom of the just-above-scrap-value beater-car food chain has been replaced by the early Ford Taurus. For some reason, though, a steady trickle of Mavericks and Comets shows up in California wrecking yards. My guess, based on the 1980s and 1990s detritus I find in some of them, is that they spent a decade or three forgotten in a back yard or driveway before being sold to U-Wrench-It. So far in this series, we’ve seen this ’75 Maverick two-door, this ’75 Comet sedan, this ’77 Comet sedan, and now today’s ’77 Maverick sedan. Let’s examine this Malaise Mainstay more closely.

Mr Yorkshire's motoring memories | Bradford Telegraph and Argus

“TBP 178F.” Keith Madeley remembers the registration of the first car he ever bought. “It was a maroon Austin 1100,” he recalls. “I was about 23 and had just passed my driving test.
Bradford-born Keith had moved from his job at Bellingham in south-east London where at 21 he became Britain’s youngest station master, to work at a larger station in Orpington, Kent. “In the first few years of my career I thought I didn’t need a car - I could travel free by train, but when children came along we needed a car.”
He bought the vehicle secondhand. “It had problems and broke down a lot,” he says. “I had it for about six months and then I got a Vauxhall Viva for £1,000 new - I remember the registration for that as well, SLC 184L.
