resort in miami. tonight the take down. from hawaii the stunning images. the vocal erupting. matt gutman right there on the scene. in windsor tonight the eyes of the world on the american about to become a princess. meghan markle, prince harry and we ve learned it will be prince charles who walks her down the aisle. good evening from windsor. the world waiting to see a young american woman marry prince harry. there are many americans here and many back home who thought it might offer a break from the headlines. tonight a horrific school shooting back home. the images playing out on tvs even in the uk. in santa fe high school a student opening fire. first responders race to the school. at least ten dead, the victims students and a teacher. those who got out hugging one another in fear and grief. anxious parents praying they would see their children again. abc s tom llamas on the scene with how the horror unfolded. he was shot! reporter: the horror unfolding just as school was getting underway. the rampage started. students sprinting to safety. go! go! reporter: teachers hustling them from the scene. it began around 7:40 a.m. senior tyler turner says his friend spotted a boy with a gun. he saw the kid walking down the hall, he looked suspicious and whatnot. he said he had a gun or something. so he went down the hall, walked down casually. didn t want him to know. and then pulled the fire alarm and we all went outside and we heard three shots. reporter: that fire alarm driving students from their classrooms. as soon as the alarms went off, everybody just started running outside, and next think you know, everybody looks and you hear boom, boom. and i just ran as fast as i could to the nearest forest, so i could hide. and i called my mom. reporter: police rang santa fe high school. he s actually shooting. he s in the art room. we ve got shots shots fired right now, guys. reporter: student peter matuza tells marcus moore he was right there when the shooter unloaded. he opened fire with a shotgun and shot one of my other friends in the head. her body fell down not too far from where i was. he turned and opened fire with the revolver. reporter: kids lining up on the field opening backpacks for officers to inspect. they were patted down. with students shaken outside others hiding in classrooms. their parents getting the dreaded phone call. she called. she said, mom, there s shots. i turned around, i said, i m coming, i m coming. stayed on the phone with her the whole time. just kept talking to her, kept telling her to stay calm, stay quiet, until the police finally let her out. reporter: by 9:00 a.m., the shooter had surrendered, but the danger wasn t over. the suspect wanting to take his carnage to a new level of evil. there have been explosive devices found in the high school and areas adjacent to the high school. reporter: tonight, 10 people dead, most of them students. others wounded in the hospital. and now the suspect has a mugshot 17-year-old dimitrios pagourtzis, a junior at santa fe high school. on facebook, he s in a baseball cap with a peace sign. but about three weeks ago, he posted this photo of a shirt with the words born to kill. authorities say he kept extensive journals. not only did he want to commit the shooting, but he wanted to commit suicide after the shooting. as you probably know, he gave himself up and admitted at the time he didn t have the courage to commit the suicide. reporter: police say he used two guns a shotgun and a .38 revolver. they belonged to his father. but they have no theories yet on what drove him to open fire on his classmates. their stories now all too familiar. i was very, very scared. i had to have someone keep me calm. i managed to keep calm though it all. was there a part of you that was like, this isn t real? this would not happen in my school? no, there wasn t. why so? it s been happening everywhere, i ve always kind if felt like eventually it was going to happen here too. chilling to hear her say she thought it would happen at her school. i want to bring in tom llamas. he s on the scene. we know the suspect is in custody. the police interviewing two persons of interest. that s right david. this is coming from the governor of the state of texas. he said one person was on the scene and had a suspicious reaction to events and another person they want information from. this is the family reunification center. this is where parents are picking up their children. you have to understand there are a lot of parents who have a lot of unanswered questions. tonight we can report one of the victims was a teacher. david. tom llamas from texas. thank you. you heard tom report on the explosives left both inside and outside the school. authorities believe the suspect bob booby trapped the area. abc s marcus moore also in texas tonight. reporter: authorities tonight are digging through the suspect s house looking for evidence and unexploded bombs. various different kinds of explosive devices have already been detected. one was a co2 device. another was a molotov cocktail. reporter: and tonight we re learning more about the teen s background. the one time honor roll student with no criminal history. his slate is pretty clean. and so there simply were not the same type of warning signs that we ve seen in so many other shootings. reporter: today s rampage marks the 22nd school shooting this year. at least 35 people killed. that toll might be higher without the bravery shown inside those schools. most mass shootings take under five minutes. having resource officers on the scene to engage the shooter is going to save lives. shots fired at dixon high school. reporter: this week, a 19-year-old opening fire near an illinois gym packed with students rehearsing for graduation. a school resource officer coming under fire before taking that student down. just last month students at santa fe high school in texas joined a walk to protest school violence. today, parkland senior emma gonzalez tweeting you deserve more than thoughts and prayers, and after supporting us by walking out we will be there to support you by raising up your voices. santa fe students and families are expected to gatherer for a vigil tonight at the high school. there are painful questions about how this shooting happened and why. david. marcus, thank you. this is hardly the first time the president had to address a deadly school shooting. he learned as presidents before him how much parents, students want this to end. it was a somber president trump today. this has been going on too long in our country, too many years, too many decades now. everyone must work together at every level of government to keep our children safe. may good heal the injured and may god comfort the wounded and may god be with the victims and with the victims families. very sad day. very, very sad. want to bring in cecilia vega tonight. we know this president invited families from parkland to the white house. other presidents have dealt with this before. how many times has president trump had to address this? this is the fifth time the president had to address the nation in the wake of a mass shooting. it s an all too familiar drill. the all too familiar response, the debate over gun control. you said after that parkland shooting, those students at this white house talking to the president demanding action. back then president trump said he would back stricter gun control policies. he backed away from many of those. the white house telling us no new announcements on gun control. cecilia vega at the white house. thank you. we re following the devastating story out of cuba. a passenger jet crashing after take off from the airport in havana. almost everyone on board believed to be lost. miraculously there were survivors. our miami station is on the scene with dramatic pictures. here s david kerley. reporter: the fireball, just after impact. and chaos at the cuban crash scene. what appears to be one of three survivors, according to state media, shuttled quickly to an ambulance. the jetliner, with more than 100 on board, slamming into a field of crops. in havana. our affiliate wplg is on the scene. look at the crowd. these are cubans trying to figure out exactly what happened. many of them say they arrived here when they saw a plume of smoke. reporter: difficult to recognize the boeing 737, as water was poured onto the wreckage, just a couple of miles from the airport where the jet took off from. it would suggest something catastrophic happened either on the takeoff roll or right as the aircraft was lifting into the air. perhaps an engine failure. perhaps a controllability issue. reporter: the jet, heading to the other end of the island, was leased from a mexican company. state-owned cubana airlines had grounded many of its own aircraft due to maintenance issues. the 737 that crashed is an older model and had many previous owners. it s maintenance records as well as the black boxes, may prove crucial in determining a cause. david tyou. there was an unsettling scene at one of the trump resorts. a man armed, reportedly yelling about the president. they shot jonathan oddi. he did survive. from hawaii tonight extraordinary images from the kilauea vocal. the cracks in the ground where lava is shooting into the air comes after the powerful eruption from the summit. the faa restricting flights within five miles. there are worries that bigger blasts might be on the way. matt gutman reporting david see that river of lava oozing downhill. i spoke to scientists. they said they don t know why these fissures have become reactivated. we ll see many more eruptions like this in the coming days. matt gutman from hawaii. thank you. we turn to the story in windsor. we re about 25 miles from london at windsor castle where meghan markle will marry prince harry. prince charles will walk meghan down the aisle and the interview with princess diana. james longman here tonight. reporter: tomorrow, her life will change forever. before she joins a new family, meghan markle will spend the night at this hotel with her mother, doria ragland. how are you feeling miss markle? wonderful, thank you. reporter: the bride-to-be looking radiant and calm, after a family tea with her mother, her fiance, the queen and prince phillip. the town of windsor officially harry and meghan central. the streets packed with royal well-wishers, straining for a glimpse of harry and william. look at the excitement. people can t wait to meet prince harry and his brother. there he is. reporter: the princes making their way through town. harry relaxed. shaking hands and taking in the moment. william, harry! william, harry! reporter: and tonight, as they get the finishing touches ready, we re learning more details about the walk down the aisle. with meghan s father unable to attend, she s asked her new father-in-law prince charles to step in. the wedding, at st. george s chapel on the grounds of windsor castle. meghan will enter up these stairs, with her bridesmaids and pageboys, including prince george and princess charlotte. she will proceed down the aisle and meet prince charles here. and he will walk her up to the altar to marry her prince. harry embraced by his mother all those years ago was asked what princess diana would have thought about this american princess. they would be thick as thieves. she would be so excited. reporter: his mother once asked what she wanted for her boy. if you find someone you love in life, you ve must hang on to it. reporter: now her youngest prince set to marry. you know it is days like days like today when when i really miss having her around and miss being able to share the happy news. but you know with the ring and with everything else that s going on i m sure she s she s with us. i m sure she s with us, yeah. james longman with us tonight. prince harry said his mother would have loved meghan markle. prin princess diana s sister is speaking tomorrow. yes, she will be representing diana s family at the wedding. both prince charles and princess diana looming large. thanks james. i hope you join robert ro berts and me for a special 20/20. then first thing in the morning set your dvrs and wake up with robin and me. history in the making. get your coffee. it s early. there s much more ahead on abc world news tonight. severe storms hitting the east. the flood watch across nine states. the house struck by lightning. rob marciano standing by. a new headline about the russian poison plot. remember that spy?
