it's united states park police, the metro police and the united states secret service. really the three lead entities that are working if close coordination. as you see the images, you see all of those law enforcement agencies represented. work in a very coordinated, you know, response to any type of incident that happens outside of the white house gate. now, again, broadly, you think of everything from the gate all the way up to h street including the blair house, the treasury and et cetera are all considered part of the white house complex. >> and then tom, this coordination between, you know, park police, metro police and secret service, i mean, that -- that is a cooperation that happens all of the time. this would not be difficult or unusual to work together under circumstances like this, correct? >> correct. they drill through this all the time, working together on what might happen, how to prevent it, how to react to an event if it
the building. >> and jonathan, we're told this shooting happened along the north fence line. not inside the property on the lawn but outside. close by a few dozen feet. but then, you know, what kind of vantage does secret service have? is that an area they would be looking at, keeping a close watch on, under ordinary circumstances anyway? >> yes, so even though it was outside of the north fence line of the white house, it's still considered part of the white house complex. worker t remember, the secret service still maintains security posts that are beyond pennsylvania avenue. stretching all the way up to h street. you know, again this is about c c concentric rings of protection. once you get out of the 18 acres of the white house, the fenced-in area, there are multiple jurisdictions.

matter of minutes. it was probably four minutes before everybody was out. they had cleared pennsylvania avenue. they had also marked down the street a block from that on the other side of the park on h street. now they have opened back up h street. they are allowing people to walk down on the side the perimeter of the white house, and the park. but they're not letting anyone through right now. they're still guarding it very securely. there are dozens of people lined up here, some taking photos others waiting for the park to open unsure of what's going on. >> so this time i mean really secret service, they're on it. >> yeah. you know they've been under a lot of scrutiny lately for several events in the last several months. i have to say that watching this happen it was -- it all happened very fast. they reacted incredibly quickly. like i said about four minutes before the entire park was cleared out. there were swaths of children. they got everybody out. >> all right. kristen holmes, our cnn producer.
originally they told us it was a drone. someone else said it could have been a model airplane. given the many incidents lately of security breaches at the white house, one man told us he said to the guy flying the device he said don't do that you're going to get in trouble, they're going to come after you. he said it was just a split second before secret service tackled him down. >> i used to live a couple blocks from the white house in my time in d.c. what side of the white house are we talking about? i'm seeing all these people. is this that park adjacent to the white house? >> this is the park on the north side. lafayette park. remember several years ago they shut down pennsylvania avenue. that's already shut down. now they've shut down the street on the other side of the park which is h street. no one can walk through. you can't drive through. so all the way from connecticut avenue down to 15th street. so you're looking at about 1 1/2 city blocks here that's totally gridlocked.
the train. so far no word on injuries but that is not to say that there aren't any. it's just at the moment no word on injuries. they need to get in there and do a better job of appraising what the situation is, also get the elected tr electricity off. if you know d.c. we're talking about an area that is right in the core of d.c. the streets affected right now are 17th street, 18th street, h street, k street, connecticut all affected by this. we should also hasten to add that a lot of people were kind of coming into work late today especially federal employees because we've had so much snow here. as a result of all of that snow people have quite simply especially federal employees have been given the latitude to come into work later and so while this was after the rush hour, we still have subway trains, metro trains here that were pretty full. you see video now from the first images from the scene as d.c. fire, ems, police, transit police all converged on the farragut north station and we are hoping there are no
