right now on early start, americans are lined up outside the supreme court to witness the biggest presidential election case since bush v. gore almost a quarter century ago. plus round two here. otherwise we re getting nothing on the border. two big republican priorities go down in flames in the same week. when can congress get its act together. and foul play, the new nikki haley campaign ad that called donald trump chicken. good morning to our viewers in the united states and around the world. i m kasie hunt. it is thursday, february 8, 5:00 a.m. on an historic day in washington. the supreme court will consider a question that has never before been asked. did donald trump engage in insurrection and if so does that allow him to be disqualified from the ballot before the justices answer has the potential to upend the 2024 race. trump is now for all intents and purposes the presumptive nominee and that is exactly how his party is acting. following his lead congressi
All right. The break news over just the last several minutes. New israeli air strikes in Northern Gaza, and you can see the smoke rising over that part of the region, and now if you are looking at gaza, this is where the air strikes have been taking place, but here, down to The Rafah Crossing in the extreme southern border of gaza and egypt, our cameraman has been seeing the critical aid crossing from egypt into gaza. Six u. N. Fuel trucks entering at that border, and that is a major development. Southern gaza is also where israel has told more than 1 million palestinians to move from Northern Gaza into Southern Gaza, and this is where israel says they will be safer, kate. It is happening as the u. S. Secretary of state tony blinken is back in israel today. He has been in the region traveling all throughout the region for days now, and we are standing by to see if blinken is going to speak to reporters now, and the critical update given the news that we are giving, and this and the sob
Right now on early start, help wanted. Divided house seeks new speaker. Must be and you nighter. R. I. N. O. S need not apply. Must handle high stress environment. Job security low. Very low. Good day to our viewers here in the United States and around the world. Im kasie hunt. It is thursday, october 5. 5 00 a. M. Here in washington where the race for a new House Speaker is on with two lawmakers already throwing their hats in the ring. Steve scalise and jim jordan. There is of course some concern that jordan might be a bit too right wing for more moderate members tastes. He says that will not be a problem. I think were a conservative right center party and im the guy who can help unite that. I think my politics are entirely consistent where republicans are across the country. So meanwhile Steve Scalise says that republicans, quote, strength as a conference comes from our unity, ends quote. Uhhuh. This conference is extraordinarily divided. And the reality is that getting to 218 votes
calling some sort of doomsday scenario that s unfolding. what is unfolding? kevin mccarthy is struggling to get votes. he has a handful of holdouts and more coming out saying that they want their own demands. this is really devolving pretty quickly. the question is which side is going to blink first. right now our reporting from our hill colleagues is that this might go into a multiple ballot situation, which is a one in a hundred year event on capitol hill. but mccarthy is notably saying he is not going to drop out, whether he holds onto that is unclear. but one side has to say we re done, and i m really not sure where we stand here today. maybe lauren knows more . but it doesn t seem clear how this is going to end. the one thing i will say is the freedom caucus folks which are pushing back on mccarthy, they have nothing to lose but they also don t have an alternative to mccarthy and that is going to be a major sticking point if
bill sweeney. the u.s. attorney detailed that these two had one-way tickets to leave the united states when arrested at dulles airport as reported. basically, there was no indication that these two were fleeing. that they had any foreknowledge that they might be indicted. any foreknowledge that there was any significant investigation against both of them. so there s no indication that they were somehow tipped off or aware that law enforcement were hot on their heels, as our hill colleagues are reporting today and, katy, as you know, both of them were asked to speak to congress. and there was a possibility that they were going to face subpoenas to testify in front of congress. so perhaps that was the motivation. we don t know the final destination for either one of the men. we do know they planned to travel outside of the united states. of course, as you know, once somebody travels outside of the united states, once you go to indict them, if it s a country
