are looking around and saying, okay, what are my other options. if i don't want trump and i don't want biden, maybe i will consider kennedy. it's good to get in there early right now. people are starting to pay attention. it's the spring season. it's going into summer, people are trying to look around to see and assess their options. and so i think this is a really smart move right now to get out there, and he's going to have to keep pounding the drum. it's early, and so there's a long way away to get to november. so he's going to have to keep reminding people about why this is important. he can't just rely on this one endorsment. >> amy parnes, thank you. we have more breaking news from that manhattan courtroom where there have been major twists and turns this morning with jury selection in donald trump's hush money trial. we'll have the latest when we come back. we'll have the latest when we come back.

able to. so the question is, will what happen in the courtroom make a difference and will in the long run the independent voters have enough enthusiasm that don't want trump to show up in november and can we keep our coalition together with enthusiasm. >> thank you for some real talk as always from claire mccaskill, amy walter, david plouffe, michael steele. thank you all for spending a bunch of time with me this afternoon. coming up next, historic fundraising call for president biden, as democrats prepare to face a republican challenger. we'll head back out to iowa right after this. this

. this could help her get more momentum. second in iowa and then get a win in new hampshire. >> jay marched jonathan -- >> jay maher is fine. i'm good with that. >> we're all friends here. i am almost interested andy haley, kristie support as a measure of potential biden growth, as i am and nikki haley running away with this thing, for the reasons that you are much more articulately laying out in your piece. how do you read christie's exit and nikki haley is going to get smoked in terms of the broader context of the gop primary field? >> well, i think the first thing it does, alex, is that it gives nikki haley an opportunity to put one tibetan i am four more days before the caucuses to say to both to the kind of rhonda santa's leader and the on the fence iowa voter generally that don't want trump to say, you guys that want trump, give me a clean shot and

desantis, and basically everyone else except chris christie are just going after each other and not even making an effort for him? it's like he's running unopposed? >> these candidates are in a difficult position because on the one hand it seems obvious that you would go after your opponent in the way that the appear weak or don't trump's legal troubles, but in iowa -- they tend to embrace them even more. they don't like to see that necessarily. these are likely republican caucus goers are people who don't believe that donald trump has done anything wrong so the people who are looking for new candidate are looking for someone who says donald trump was good for our time but it's time to turn a page and can that person offer their own positive vision? that's what they're trying to. do it's potentially a risk. they're still down 20 to 30 points in the polls and yet to see what may happen on caucus

republicans, tim. donald trump blocked steve scalise from a chance at being speaker of the house. he boxed him out. what did steve scalise due today? he endorsed donald trump. so who exactly are the normal republicans? >> this is my pet issue. so thank you for asking me about this. i do note the endorsement race this time. it is over 140 members of the house, senate, and city governors have endorsed, trump and nikki haley has to. last time january to 2016, don trump had a single intimacy in congress, jeff sessions. now he's got all of them. 18 senators. the house majority leader, the speaker the house. this party has united behind. him i call it the new maga establishment. there are a handful of closet normals, the people that don't want trump but don't have the courage or the gumption to say it. and then the people who haven't endorsed anyone but they're not

>> donald trump can only fight these cases in the court of public opinion, because these election officials, secretaries of state, michigan court. these election officials, these judges are following the law, that or following their oath of office. and the main secretary of state held a hearing and the evidence showed that don trump engaged in insurrection, therefore she was duty bound to disqualify him, just as if he wore 34 years old or not a natural born citizen and i will move into the courts. why? the main law provides for a court, however every time someone has gone these are just government officials doing their job.

decisions are still pending in 17 of them, including battleground states, arizona, wisconsin, nevada, and all this comes just ahead of the third anniversary of january 6th with the biden campaign just today outlining its key theme that trump's threat to democracy is growing more dire. i want to bring in nbc's garrett haake who is following all of this from washington, harry litman, host of the talking feds podcast. ashley parker is "washington post" senior national political correspondent and an msnbc political analyst. welcome all. happy new year. garrett, give us an update on where these two cases stand and the chances that they could be taken up by the supreme court anytime soon. >> well, chris, it's been notable that you've had officials in both parties in both states practically begging the supreme court to weigh in here. there's a widespread understanding that it will be they who decide donald trump's ballot access across the country, especially in colorado

race, if not in actuality, then, you know, they're not going to have any money. they're not going to have any support. this morning chris christie said he is staying in through at least april which is when trump's d.c. trial could start. here's what he said. >> anybody who thinks i'm getting out of this race, they're crazy. all this stuff is going to happen and eventually i think a large number of republican voters are going to say this is destined to reelect joe biden. that's something that i think is one of the only things that ignites most republicans, they don't want to reelect joe biden. i'm going to continue to fight this as the only person who's taking him on directly and nikki can pray for his vice presidential nomination. >> is it possible, do you think, matt, for donald trump to get a victory in iowa that's so substantial it does for all practical purposes no matter what a chris christie says, knocks everybody else out of the race, if they're not as some people believe out of it already? >> no, i don't. i think we have at least with

nikki haley in new hampshire, as of right now, it's within ten points, which is a pretty close lead we've seen so far in this campaign. again, these aren't necessarily mathematical equations. for example, ron desantis doesn't do well in iowa and drops out the next day, a lot of his votes will go to trump, but you're right, things can happen down the line if trump says something at trial or does something, does the math change a little bit. there's no incentive right now for anyone to get out before the voters vote and until you feel like you have really exhausted every option. usually that involves a lack of funds somehow. >> matt gorman, vaughn hillyard, guys, thank you so much. and right after the break, we'll get to the developing story out of new jersey where an imam was shot outside of a mosque. you're watching "chris jansing reports" only on msnbc. honestly? i couldn't afford to get sick. i want to be there for this one. i can't if i'm sick. pneumococcal pneumonia is a potentially serious bacterial lung disease.
