The destructive power of the super storm unleashed after dark as sandy made landfall. The flooding was instant, the scale shocking. The storm arrived with high tide in new york harbor, creating a surge of nearly 14 feet. Subway tunnels flooded. The water engulfed the construction site at ground zero.
