Humberto Maturana's contribution to the biology of cognition played a crucial role in the development of science and human society.
A human being passing into eternity past 90 means a fulfilled life. It is more so in the case of Humberto Maturana, the biologist from Chile, who passed away on 6 May 2021.
He is to the science of cognition what Charles Darwin is to the science of evolution. Yet, he has not attained the same fame as the British naturalist. But his importance to the future of science and also human society cannot be exaggerated.

KSL TV
OREM — The largest graduating class in Utah Valley University history should embrace surprises and root contention from their lives, Sister Wendy Nelson told 8,729 graduates on Friday night during the commencement keynote speech on the Orem campus.
"Graduates, if you want to have a wonderful life, a life filled with momentum and optimism and accomplishments, remove contention from your mind and heart, from your conversations and relationships, from your home and from your workplace," Sister Nelson said.
The retired marriage and family therapist acknowledged that removing contention from one's life, relationships and conversations is easier said than done, but insisted it absolutely is possible to remove "destructive contention" from debates over important, substantive topics even with those with whom one disagrees.

ONSTAGE: INTERVIEW WITH ALESSANDRO MELIS

This second part introduces the continuation of the interview with Alessandro Melis, a man that is for me a great pleasure to listen even if the depth and vastness of his culture, which ranges from architecture to biology, from paleoanthropology to all those specialized fields that complement his research, based on a truly extraordinary multidisciplinarity, make us feel really inadequate, since we do not  know most of the theories with which he entertains us, always different and extremely intriguing, which speak to us of an ancestral and current bond between man and nature, that evolves in respect for one another, without attempting to prevaricate and dominate but rather to find the balance and harmony of a symbiotic relationship. His stories have involved me into a world that I ignored, which is gradually capturing my interest and my passion.

COP 25, "Calidad humana" and the Sixth Mass Extinction

This article was published in Spanish some days before a surprising and massive social unrest burst throughout Chile during the last week of October, preventing COP25 (International Conference of the Parties for the Environment) from taking place in this country. As in Paris or Hong Kong, in Santiago thousands protested expressing unconformity with their lifestyle despite the high GDP of these societies, as Jeffrey Sachs pointed out. People are questioning inequalities, abuses, corruption and exclusion, and demanding a better quality of life, in which one essential element should be an environment that is safe and free from contamination. Those social reactions are happening in countries which are considered as models of market economies. Maybe, as Oswald Spengler postulated, “any culture is a superorganism with a limited and unpredictable lifespan”, -likewise mankind and whole life on the earth, as it is analyzed in the following paragraphs-.

Intelligence May Not Be Computable

The ultimate goal of the field of artificial intelligence (AI) is to construct machines that are at least as smart as humans at specific tasks. AI has been successful in developing machines that can learn how to recognize speech, find new classes of stars in sky surveys, win grandmaster chess matches, recognize faces, label images, diagnose diseases, hail taxis, drive cars, navigate around obstacles, and much more. Yet none of these machines is the slightest bit intelligent. How can they do intelligent things without being intelligent? Can these machines be trusted when presented with new data they have never seen before? Businesses and governments are using AI in an exploding number of sensitive and critical applications without having a good grasp on when those programs can be trusted.
