In Cheboksary, the competitions of the 102nd Russian championship in athletics ended. In the final days of the tournament, the athletes of the Central Sports Club of the Army won another 24 awards of various denominations: 11 gold, 8 silver and 5 bronze.

Reigning world champion Mutaz Essa Barshim is ready to compete against a strong field in the high jump event of the third Diamond League meeting, which takes place in Florence, Italy today.
It will be the second appearance for Qatar’s gravity-defying athlete this Diamond League season, after he clinched second position at the home meet in Doha last month, in build up for this summer’s Olympic Games.

Since Cuba’s Javier Sotomayor set the world record of 2.45m in 1993, leading high jumpers have been pursuing the mark over the years without success.
For Qatar’s reigning world champion, Mutaz Barshim – the man tipped to have the best chance of shattering the longstanding record – the uphill task is achievable.
“I think 2.47m is possible if you manage to stay healthy,” Barshim said at a Doha Diamond League (DDL) press conference yesterday, when asked if a jump of 2.45m is possible.
