I've Been Vegetarian For 4 Years, and I Don't Miss Meat at All

"What's the first thing you want to eat when you get back home?" my Thimphu hosts asked. I'd spent the past few weeks nannying my cousin's kids in a remote region of eastern Bhutan, and food hadn't been particularly plentiful there. I was hungry often and even ended up losing weight unintentionally, so as grateful as I was for the whole experience, I was thrilled to be slowly making my way back to the US and its abundant supermarkets, all-you-can-eat buffets, and wide variety of restaurants.
"A cheeseburger," I replied. I hadn't eaten meat for the duration of my weeks-long stay in Bhutan, and while I'd harbored an aversion to meat for as long as I could remember, I did have a penchant for cheeseburgers. In fact, I'd missed burgers so much while I was in Bhutan that I only made it as far as the Bangkok international airport before ordering one — that I didn't finish. I ate every last fry and drained my drink, but from the taste to the texture, the burger was utterly disappointing.

Having watched warily from the wings, McDonaldâs Corp. is finally entering the modern meatless-market with a menu of herbivorous items. Top of the list is the plant-based burger, McPlant:
âThere are other plant-based burgers out there, but the McPlant delivers our iconic taste in a sink-your-teeth-in (and wipe-your-mouth) kind of sandwich. Itâs made with a juicy, plant-based patty and served on a warm, sesame seed bun with all the classic toppings.â
Although McPlant is a notable pivot for a company that grinds through a billion pounds of American beef each year, McDonaldâs is being a soupçon coy: The âother plant-based burgersâ to which they allude include Burger Kingâs Impossible Whopper, Wendyâs The Plantiful, White Castleâs Impossible Sliders, and Carlâs Jr. Beyond Burger â as well as groundbreaking consumer products from Impossible Foods, Beyond Meat, and Kelloggâs Incogmeato.

"I had picked up some bad habits, smoking herb all the time, drinking every day in the urban obstacle course," says Stic.man, a.k.a. Khnum Muata Ibomu but born Clayton Gavin. "I woke up one morning and my ankle was gigantically swollen, and I found out I had gout. That was my wake-up call. It was a blessing that revealed my path."
