Modern Rock In Motion: Deep Sea Diver, Swans, Professor and the Madman and more
Columnist Peter Lindblad reports on standout modern rock releases that wrapped up 2020, such as Deep Sea Diver, Swans, Professor and the Madman and more.
Recovering from a head-on collision with Metz’s roiling
Atlas Vending is expected to take at least six to eight weeks, according to doctors. That time might be best spent wandering through hell and purgatory with Professor and the Madman or being comforted by Deep Sea Diver’s irresistible and empathetic indie-pop eddies, but it takes a strong constitution to journey into Swans’

FUV's New Dig: Deep Sea Diver

High Beam/ATO Records
Deep Sea Diver is the musical outlet for singer, songwriter and guitarist Jessica Dobson. Originating in Seattle a little over a decade ago, Deep Sea Diver has ended a four-year silence with a third album,
Impossible Weight. It arrives 11 years after the band’s debut EP and eight after their first album,
History Speaks.
In the aftermath of the touring that supported the band’s second album, 2016’s
Secrets, Deep Sea Diver went right to work on some new music. That’s when Dobson found herself in a very unpleasant headspace. “We went into the studio pretty quickly after the tour ended," she explains in her web bio, "and I sort of hit a wall where I was feeling very detached from making music, and unable to find joy in it.”

Los Angeles band Local Natives have teamed up with singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten for a new single titled ‘Lemon’.
The outfit shared the track today (October 16) alongside the announcement of a new EP called ‘Sour Lemon’, slated for release on October 23 via Loma Vista.
The new single was also accompanied by a simple yet stirring music video, directed by Kenny Laubbacher. In it, Local Natives vocalist Taylor Rice and Van Etten are filmed separately walking towards the camera, eventually coming together only to pass by each other in the end.

Jessica Dobson Balances Depression And An Uncertain World In Deep Sea Diver's 'Impossible Weight' « American Songwriter

“Honey I don’t
pretend to understand/why everything’s falling apart,” sings Jessica Dobson,
aka Deep Sea Diver frontwoman/songwriter/guitarist, on “Stop Pretending,” an
acclaimed, one-off single released earlier in 2020. Those words could apply to
the depression she faced at the end of her previous tour leading into the
recording of this album, and/or the pandemic that has put the kibosh on any
further roadwork until…well, no one really knows when.
Oddly the track does
not appear on Dobson’s third release under the Deep Sea Diver moniker. That’s unusual since that tune was so well received. But the ten tracks that appear on

Welcome to the 39th Songs of the Week of 2020. We skipped Songs of the Week last week because we had other plans last Friday, so this week’s list covers two weeks worth of songs.
A lot has happened in the last two weeks. There were two debates. First there was a disastrous presidential one between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, that many are calling a national disgrace and one of the worth debates in U.S. history (largely because of Trump’s behavior). Then a fly stole the show in this week’s more dignified vice presidential debate. Trump contracted COVID-19, as did many of his associates. He went to the hospital for several days, signed some blank documents in a photo op, took an ill-advised drive around the hospital to please his fans (and his ego), and then made a show of returning to the White House, triumphantly removing his mask for the press and declaring the coronavirus isn’t that scary after all (never mind that 213,000 Americans have died from it). Because of Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis, it was announced that the next debate would be a virtual one and so Trump pulled out and now it’s been cancelled instead of postponed.

Sharon Van Etten has shared a “deeply personal” B-Side from 2015 digitally, for the first time – you can listen to it below.
‘All Over Again’ was the B-Side to ‘I Don’t Want to Let You Down’ from the EP of the same name.
Announcing the digital release of the B-Side on Instagram, Van Etten wrote: “My 7″ ‘I Don’t Want To Let You Down’ had a b-side that was never digitally released – until today.
“‘All Over Again’ is a deeply personal song written during the ‘Are We There’ sessions. Broken hearted years ago and driven to find true love, it’s hard to believe I was ever there when I look back now from such a fulfilled space.

For about 25 years, Mike Park would go to the same post office almost every day.
“I was lucky that we had a one-person post office in the town of Monte Serrano,” says Park, who paints an idyllic picture of this post office, likening it to Mayberry, the fictional setting of
Andy Griffith Show. Park knew all the employees and was even allowed to walk into the employees only room to drop off packages.
That post office in Monte Serrano closed a few years ago, but if it’s not obvious, Park spent a lot of time there. He founded Asian Man Records in 1996 and the United States Postal Service was critical to his label, so much so he nods to it on compilations titled

Beyond Bulletproof this year and he's gearing up for another new project,
Occupational Hazard. New single "Death Is Callin" finds Mozzy exploring a darker side -- musically and lyrically -- over a classic West Coast bounce.
Daniel Avery has released "Dusting for Smoke," from this year's surprise album
Love + Light, as a single and with it comes a brand new b-side that's a tribute to the late, great Andrew Weatherall. “I was in my studio the morning I heard about Andrew Weatherall’s passing,” Avery says. “The track ‘Lone Swordsman’ is what formed that day. Andrew was a hero, a friend and someone who regularly reminded us all how it should be done, not to mention the funniest fucker around. Proceeds from this record will be donated to Amnesty International in his memory. Thank you for everything.”
