Ebrahim Raisi became a household name in Iran when he ran as a conservative candidate in the 2017 presidential elections opposite President Hassan Rouhani. Winning only 38 percent of the vote, Raisi lost the election to the incumbent. What Raisi gained through this defeat, though, was national notoriety and the support of fifteen million people. Moreover, since then, Raisi has not only emerged as a behind-the-scenes player and Supreme Leader loyalist, but has also risen through the ranks by becoming head of the judiciary and a potential conservative political leader of influence within the competitive Iranian political system.

Interview with Mahvash Sabet: Lyrical flights

Lyrical flights
Mahvash Sabet, a leading representative of the Baha'i religion, spent almost ten years in Iranian prisons because of her faith. She was released in September. Sabet turned her experiences during her confinement into poems, which she managed to smuggle out of prison. Interview by Keyvandokht Ghahari
Ms Sabet, can you describe the day of your release for us?
Mahvash Sabet:
My family and I were expecting my release on 19 September. On 18 September, however, I was informed that I was being released. The prison staff didn't even allow me to use the telephone. They just brought me to the exit and that was that. I told them I would get someone to film me and would tell the whole world they had just let me out on the street after ten years in prison with no money, no belongings, and that I didn't know anything and wasn't able to do anything. They couldn't have cared less. When I got outside, I was angry rather than happy. Outside the prison gate, some people were gathered, waiting for the release of their relatives. I asked if someone would make a call for me. One of them phoned my husband.

Academic brain drain raised by MPs after years of denial

Academic brain drain raised by MPs after years of denial
The number of students and academics fleeing Iran, including many top professors, is causing a sizeable brain drain and has reached such high levels that it is being openly discussed in the Iranian parliament, after years of government denial.
In the past, the government has denied that a major problem exists, but oppressive regime tactics coupled with crippling international sanctions and salaries made uncompetitive by the falling currency value have led to more and more highly educated Iranians fleeing the country.
The protracted issue was brought to the forefront again during a Majles-e Showra-ye Eslami (parliament) session in the capital Tehran this month when lawmakers from different regions of the country expressed concern that the talent exodus could aggravate the country’s economic crisis.

French tourist Benjamin Briere is being held in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, Iran
Continuing to seek leverage with other countries through political prisoners, Iran has charged another foreign national with “espionage” and “propaganda against the system”.
The lawyer for French tourist Benjamin Briere, detained arrested since last May, confirmed that his client has been accused of taking pictures in “forbidden areas” and of “raising the question in [social] media” about why hijab is mandatory for women in Iran but optional in other Islamic countries.
“My colleagues and I believe that these charges are false and baseless, but we have to wait for the judge to conduct a full investigation in the next few days and announce his verdict,” attorney Saeed Dehghan said.
