A new book, 'Freedom, Land and Community,' chronicles McLean County's history

The last serious history of McLean County came out in 1908. That's about to change with the book, “Freedom, Land, And Community: A History of McLean County, Illinois 1730 to 1900.” The author is Greg Koos, the retired director of the McLean County Museum of History.

Mr. Potato Head is back in the news — wait, was Mr. Potato Head ever previously in the news? I seem to remember unsubstantiated reports of a harassment suit from Barbie’s lawyers back in the 1990s, but it appears that matter was settled out of court and never discussed publicly again.
According to media outlets that cover fake outrage and potato-related matters, including The New York Times, toymaker Hasbro initially announced in February it was dropping “Mr.” from the brand name, making the Potato Head characters more gender neutral.
“Hasbro is making sure all feel welcome in the Potato Head world by officially dropping the Mr. from the Mr. Potato Head brand name and logo to promote gender equality and inclusion,” the company said in a statement.

Valentine’s Day has come and gone but romance scams continue all year long, according to various email warnings I received from the likes of the Better Business Bureau, the Federal Trade Commission and some guy named Rick.
I must be on a list of “most likely to fall prey to romance scams,” but I learned my lesson years ago when a girl in third grade sent a note reading, “Do you like me? Check yes or no.” I checked yes, she took my strawberry ice cream cup at lunch, and then would not talk to me at recess.
I don’t think it seriously affected my future relationships, but it did ruin strawberry ice cream for me.

The online site, which presents information on a seemingly infinite amount of subjects in more than 300 languages, launched in January 2001. It was billed initially as an encyclopedia “anyone can edit.”
At the time, I thought that was one of the dumbest ideas I had ever heard. “Anyone” in theory means “everyone” and while I don’t know everyone, I know quite a few people who should not be editing an encyclopedia.
To prove my point, I wrote a snarky column in which I chronicled creating my own biography on Wikipedia, one in which I was born in a log cabin I built myself, achieved war hero status, earned several Olympic medals and rose to the top of the political world.
