With the school year ending and the economy slowly reopening, let’s reminisce about the illustrious history of summer jobs.
I’m sure many of you worked your way through high school and college by flipping burgers, mowing lawns, performing lifeguard duties, working on an assembly line (I worked three summers in a cosmetics factory) or clerking in a retail store.
Or maybe you considered yourself part of show business while being paid to stand in front of an establishment twirling a sign. (I must confess I’ve never stopped at a business solely because of a sign-twirler. The words “Say, this place has one less person to keep the sales counter staffed or unclog the toilet — count me in” have never crossed my lips.) ....

March 12 (UPI) Two Democratic lawmakers reintroduced legislation to combat hate crime targeting Asian Americans during the coronavirus pandemic.
Rep. Grace Meng of New York and Sen. Mazie K. Hirono of Hawaii announced in a joint statement on Thursday that they introduced the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act amid a surge in incidents of physical, verbal and online attacks targeting Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. ....

It’s hard to look around Plainview and find an entity without John C. Anderson’s fingerprints.
He served almost nine full years as Plainview’s mayor but his impact on the city began long before that – and it runs deep.
People who used to work with him describe John C. as one of Plainview’s most prominent movers and shakers of his time. He was a man rarely seen wearing anything other than a suit.
“Everybody looked to John as a leader,” said Mike Fox, current executive director of the Plainview/Hale County Economic Development Corporation. ....

March 3 (UPI) A new Defense Department report called sleep deprivation a serious detriment to readiness, adding that most service members lack adequate sleep, and backs up earlier moves made by the Pentagon to improve both quantity and quality of sleep for military personnel.
The Study on Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Readiness of Members in the Armed Forces was published last week, following a demand from Congress after sleep deprivation was determined to be a factor in two separate collisions in 2017 between U.S. Navy vessels and commercial ships. ....
