LIBERTY, MO — Going back to biblical times, a red door on a building symbolized protection.
Inside the old Garrison School in Liberty, Missouri, a certain group of children were protected from the ills of society. Dr. Cecelia Robinson is the protector of their story.
“A people who have no knowledge of their history is like a tree with no roots," Robinson said.
Planted across Clay County are the contributions made by African Americans.
As 41 Action News anchor Kevin Holmes quenched his thirst to learn more, he came across a monument that stands right outside the county courthouse. It’s a water fountain.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Tonika Brockman faced challenges climbing the corporate ladder. She overcame those challenges through education, getting creative and being client-centered.
Now, Brockman is Liberty Bank's Regional Vice President for all of Kansas and Missouri. It's a career she calls her purpose.
"I decided that I wanted to come to Liberty Bank last March at the height of the Black Lives Matter Movement. From a personal standpoint, it became very disheartening as I moved up in the ranks of banking and supported a more affluent clientele that there was no minority in my book of business," Brockman said.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Russell Stover may be the namesake for the Kansas City, Missouri-based chocolate company, but his wife, Clara, played a big role in the company’s success.
Christi Jones, the direct to consumer program manager for Russell Stover Chocolates, helped 41 Action News trace Clara’s role in creating the company.
“Not only was Clara the founder, but she was a pioneer more than just in the chocolate business,” Jones pointed out.
She explained Clara and Russell met in Iowa City, Iowa, in the early 1900s. Russell was a candy salesman. Clara dreamed of opening her own candy store. She spent years tinkering with her recipes in their kitchens as the Stovers moved from city to city for Russell’s jobs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The courage and valor of the first African American U.S. fighter pilots during World War II is impacting future generations of minority pilots in Kansas and Missouri.
Known as the Red Tails, the Tuskegee Airmen faced bigotry and segregation from their own country; but they didn't let it stop them from being the most successful squadron of U.S. fighter pilots to escort U.S. bombers into enemy territory.
