Dharamsala, May 14 : Former speaker of Tibetan Parliament-in-exile and experienced administrator Penpa Tsering will be the next President of Tibetan government-in-exile, it was announced on Friday.
Tsering, 53, who won the post of Central Tibetan Administration s Sikyong (President) with 5,417 votes, succeeded Lobsang Sangay, who completes two terms as president this month.
CTA chief election commissioner Wangdu Tsering declared the result here for the second and final round, polling for which was held on April 11.
Tsering, who lost to the current incumbent Lobsang Sangay in the 2016 elections, polled 34,324 votes against his nearest rival, Kelsang Dorjee Aukatsang, who polled 28,907 votes. ....

DHARAMSHALA, May 14: The former Speaker of TPiE Penpa Tsering is set to become the next Sikyong (President) of the the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), after the official results of the Presidential and Parliamentary (Chithue) elections were declared by the Election Commission (EC) on Friday.
The Chief Election Commissioner Wangdu Tsering Pesur announced the results virtually, declaring Penpa Tsering’s victory in the final round of elections with 34, 324 votes against Kelsang Dorjee Aukatsang who bagged 28,907 votes.
The President-elect Penpa Tsering on his victory message echoed the importance of unity in the exile community and promised to work towards resuming dialogue between Tibet and China, “I look forward to the day we actually celebrate our victory when we resolve the Sino-Tibet dialogue in the ....

On a rainy afternoon on Sunday, April 11, Rinzin Lhundup was a quiet presence, listening to his friends intently as they chatted about the day’s proceedings over cups of steaming hot butter tea. The reticent 50-year-old, who works as a housekeeper in Manhattan, had arrived at the Phuntsok Deshe, the Tibetan Community Center in Queens, to cast his ballot for the Tibetan government in exile, then stuck around to help sell fundraising wares for the community.
Lhundup and nearly 5,000 other Tibetans had turned up at the Queens center from around New York and neighboring states to take part in democracy in a country that doesn’t officially exist. Lhundup was forced to leave his home in Lhasa to escape Chinese persecution in 1991. He trekked into Nepal, eventually settling for a time in India before moving to the United States. His father, also an activist, died at the hands of the Chinese and his younger sister Ngawang Sangdrol was the longest-serving Tibetan prisoner in China. ....
