Uber, Lyft to offer free rides to vaccination sites in partnership with White House

The Biden administration on Tuesday announced that, as part of its new White House partnership, Uber and Lyft will offer free rides to vaccination sites in the coming weeks.
According to the White House, helping Americans get to the vaccination sites will eliminate barriers and push the U.S. closer to President Biden's goal of getting 70-percent of adult Americans at least one shot by July 4th.
While Uber and Lyft have already partnered with other businesses to expand transportation access to vaccination sites, the announcement by the White House is their first formal government partnership.
Lyft said a "ride code" will be available through its website or app by May 24th.

Japan's opposition leader says Tokyo Olympics cannot be held safelyNews

With the Tokyo Olympics just several weeks away,.. the leader of Japan's main opposition party is questioning Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's assurances that the Games can be held safely.
Yukio Edano, head of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, said Monday that it's impossible to protect the lives, health and livelihoods of the Japanese people while holding a global sporting event.
Edano said it would be unacceptable if the Games lead to new COVID-19 variants being brought in from overseas.
He also slammed the government for prematurely lifting the previous state of emergency in late March, saying it caused the number of virus cases to rebound quickly.

Israel's active COVID-19 cases fall below 1,000News

In Israel Sunday, the number of people with COVID-19 dipped to 985, the lowest figure in 14 months.
The last time active COVID-19 cases dropped under one thousand was on March 21, 2020, when it was 980 during the first wave of the pandemic.
Active cases continued to soar, peaking about three months ago, when more than 74-thousand active cases were reported, and the daily number of newly confirmed cases neared 9-thousand.
However, the tide has turned, thanks to some 4.5 million Israelis being vaccinated as of Sunday, and mostly with both doses.
Another 830-thousand have recovered, and only 17 new cases were reported on Saturday.
Currently, there are just 84 people hospitalized with COVID-19.

More COVID-19 cases reported in last 2 weeks than in first 6 months of pandemic: WHO

The last two weeks has seen more COVID-19 cases worldwide, than the first six months of the pandemic.
According to the WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Monday, India and Brazil accounted for more than half of last weeks' cases, but there are many other countries across the globe facing "a very fragile situation".
The UN health agency is providing equipment and supplies, including oxygen concentrators to India, while the WHO Foundation is also raising funds to support the need for oxygen and related supplies worldwide.
And the situation continues to be dire in India due to the lack of oxygen supplies,. as more and more patients in the country are dying daily due to a collapse in the medical system.

Under the new rules, bars and cafes are allowed to reopen their outdoor terraces for the first time in half a year
However,.. some restrictions remain.
Terraces are only allowed to open between midday and 6PM for a maximum of two socially distanced people per table, unless they're from the same household.

Israel removes mask mandate for outdoors... 53% of population vaccinated

Israel ended a year-long requirement on Sunday to wear a mask in public spaces in the latest easing of COVID-19 restrictions following its mass vaccination drive.
While masks are still required indoors and at large gatherings, for many,.. the change is something they need time to get used to.

"Being without a mask for the first time in a long time, it feels weird, but it's a very good weird. It's like being the mask is like part of me for a really long time so being without it is very, it's weird but good."
Despite the move, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that the pandemic isn't yet over, and that citizens should remain cautious.
