Killeen man pleads guilty after standoff with KPD last year

A Killeen man pleaded guilty during a remote hearing this week to two first-degree felony charges after a three-hour standoff with police last year.
David Paul Lawrence, 45, was indicted on May 20, 2020, on two charges of aggravated assault against a public servant.
A sentencing hearing in Lawrence’s case has been set for April 26, according to the 426th Judicial District Court coordinator’s office.
Lawrence was arrested after a three-hour standoff with Killeen police in the 4200 block of Corrine Drive on Feb. 17, 2020. Police said he had “numerous” firearms, including two assault-style rifles, inside the home.
The incident began when police responded to a verbal domestic incident in the southwest Killeen neighborhood.

Mamata will tie up with BJP in case of hung assembly in Bengal: Yechury

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram
Yechury on Sunday said that the Trinamool Congress has to be defeated first to stop the communal bandwagon of the RSS-BJP, and claimed that the TMC might rejoin the NDA to form the government in West Bengal in case of a hung assembly.
Terming the ongoing political tussle between the TMC and the BJP as a "mock fight", Yechury alleged that the saffron party is using money from the PM CARES fund, set up to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, to "buy" leaders during the time of elections.
"The farmers at the Singhu border in Delhi are fighting against the (Narendra) Modi government's anti-people policies. If farmers who provide us with food can put up such a gallant fight, we too can do it here," he said.

KPD sees increased call volume during winter storm, faces other challenges

The winter storm, already infamous with effects still ongoing, has posed challenges for Killeen’s police force, including an increase in calls for service, but officers are rolling with the punches.
“It’s been a challenge prioritizing the many calls for service to help Killeen’s residents,” said Ofelia Miramontez, KPD spokeswoman, in an email on Thursday. “This week alone, the department has received a high volume of calls related to traffic crashes and disabled vehicles, due to the weather and road conditions.”
At the same time, the usual police work continues.
According to the online Community Crime Map over the past week, officers have responded to 10 narcotics violations, eight instances of vandalism, five aggravated assaults, four DUIs, five motor vehicle thefts, and five other burglaries and thefts, along with other calls.

Pamplin Media Group - Portland 'antifa snowball fight' ends in shattered glass

Portland 'antifa snowball fight' ends in shattered glass
February 13 2021
A rally of anti-fascists in snowy downtown Portland Friday evening ended with a few broken windows, police say.
The ground was white with snow, but local anti-fascists still dressed all in black for another protest in downtown Portland on Friday evening, Feb. 12.
A group of perhaps 70 people gathered at Director Park, 815 S.W. Park Ave., around 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 12, for what was advertised as an "antifa snowball fight" on social media. A few snowballs were thrown at passing police cruisers.

The Anti-growth Alliance That Fueled Urban Gentrification

From California to the Northeast, a funny thing has happened recently in America’s most expensive metropolitan areas: Rents have gone down. Ever since remote workers began fleeing urban cores at the start of the coronavirus pandemic—whether to the Hamptons or their parents’ basements—urban housing markets have been flooded with empty apartments. As a result, the prices that rental units command in certain large cities have dropped dramatically, to the tune of 18 percent in Boston, 19 percent in Seattle, and nearly 25 percent in San Francisco, according to a November survey by the firm Apartment List.
