Les McKeown, Bay City Rollers star, dead aged 65 as family pay tribute


The Edinburgh singer died suddenly at his home on Tuesday.
A statement published on the musician's social media read: "It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our beloved husband and father Leslie Richard McKeown.
"Leslie died suddenly at home on Tuesday 20 April.
"We are currently making arrangements for his funeral and ask for privacy after the shock of our profound loss.
"Thank you. Keiko and Jubei McKeown."
His former manager John MacLaughlan spoke to the Daily Record after he was told the tragic news by the Les's wife Peko.
John told the paper: "I'm very sad and shocked and so is Peko, his wife. She is heartbroken and called me from Les' phone with the news. I picked up and thought it was Les wanting a chat.

Les McKeown — the singer who led Bay City Rollers through their most successful period — has died. Today his family made the sad announcement, explaining McKeown died suddenly at his home on Tuesday (April 20). He was 65.
McKeown led the Scottish pop band through their '70s peak, being the voice behind such hits as "I Only Wanna Be With You," "Bye Bye Baby," "Shang-a-Lang" and "Give a Little Love."
"It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our beloved husband and father Leslie Richard McKeown," his family wrote on the singer's Twitter account. "Leslie died suddenly at home on Tuesday."

It's been announced that Bay City Rollers singer Les McKeown has died at the age of 65.
The Edinburgh-born pop vocalist was the front man of the Scottish group during their 1970s' heyday. They were that decade's equivalent to Take That, Westlife or One Direction.

Les McKeown, who sang lead for Scottish ’70s hitmakers Bay City Rollers during its heyday, died Tuesday at home, his family announced. He was 65. No cause of death was revealed.

Considered a progenitor of the modern boy band, the Edinburgh quintet saw McKeown join in 1973. He replaced original singer Gordon “Nobby” Clark two years after the group had broken through with a top 10 single in the UK. In 1974, Bay City Rollers scored a second British hit with the McKeown-sung “Remember (Sha La La),” which began a streak of nine consecutive Top 10 hits for the Bell label in the UK. Les McKeown, the singer of the Scottish ’70s band Bay City Rollers, has died at the age of 65. On Thursday, McKeown’s family shared the news of his death in a post on social media.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our beloved husband and father Leslie Richard McKeown,” the message stated. “Leslie died suddenly at home on Tuesday 20 April 2021.
