Euro zone inflation on the deck as yen sways

A data heavy session, headlined by euro zone inflation figures for April, awaits Europe in an action-packed week that got off to a volatile start courtesy of the flailing yen. The will-they-or-won't-they discussion has moved to did-they-or-didn't-they a day after a suspected intervention by Japanese authorities hauled the yen off 34-year lows. The details are murky and perhaps the confirmation remains some time away as Japan's top currency diplomat Masato Kanda declined again on Tuesday to comment on whether the finance ministry had intervened to prop up the yen a day earlier.

Morning Bid: Big Tech see-saw flips positive, yen swings wildly

A volatile week for Wall Street megacaps looks set to end with a positive twist as Microsoft and Alphabet earnings wowed the gallery overnight, while the yen plunged anew in Asia as the Bank of Japan left policy on hold. After a day in which Meta's outsize spend on artificial intelligence appear to spook investors and sent both its stock and the wider tech sector into tailspin, its rivals appeared to steady the ship overnight. Microsoft beat estimates for its quarterly revenue and profit, driven by gains from adoption of artificial intelligence across its cloud services, and its shares jumped more than 4% in extended trade.

Meta plunges, mega mining merger revealed

Megacap Meta revived Big Tech jitters on Wall St overnight as its pumped-up stock balked at an ostensibly decent earnings update late Wednesday - but the mining sector was abuzz about BHP's possible $39 billion mega bid for Anglo American. Either way, the Meta retreat has dragged Wall St stock futures back down about 0.5-1.0% ahead of Thursday's bell and ups the ante as the 'Magnificent 7' reports keep rolling in. With almost a third of the S&P500 reported already, nearly 80% have beaten estimates and reported earnings growth has picked up close to 7% - back to where consensus forecasts for the first quarter were at the start of the year.

Morning Bid: Eyes on PMIs for rebound signs

Purchasing Managers Index figures begin a data and corporate results heavy week. Consensus expectations, however, are for Europe's manufacturing PMI to stay firmly in contractionary territory at 46.6, which could add pressure on the euro. Japan's factory activity contracted in April, though the pace of decline was very modest and at 49.9 the manufacturing PMI was its closest to the break-even point of 50 since slipping into contraction in June.

Morning Bid: Tanking Tesla reports, Europe business beats

World markets have cheered up a bit this week, but ailing Tesla's tanking stock price faces a critical earnings test later on Tuesday and this month's European business pulse proved surprisingly racy. Relief at cooling Middle East tensions helped steady the ship on Monday after the worst week on Wall Street since 2022 - with bellwether chip giant Nvidia recouping some of Friday's 10% lunge as Big Tech megacaps get set to report first quarter updates over three days of a heavy earnings diary. First of the "Magnificent 7" vanguard stocks to report on Tuesday is electric vehicle behemoth Tesla, which is down a massive 43% for the year to date and off almost 60% over the past two years amid a brutal price war, waning EV demand worldwide and serial corporate governance and product questions.
