France contributes €1M to OPCW’s Trust Fund for Syria Missions
The Government of France is contributing €1M toward supporting the activities of the Trust Fund for Syria Missions at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
The Fund supports the Organisation’s special missions and contingency operations related specifically to the Syrian Arab Republic. France’s new contribution aims to assist in full elimination of the Syrian Chemical Weapons Programme and clarification of facts related to the alleged use of chemical weapons, in accordance with the Chemical Weapons Convention and relevant decisions of the policy-making organs of the OPCW. The contribution will support the work of the Declaration Assessment Team (DAT) and the Fact-Finding Mission (FFM).

France donates to chemical weapons watchdog after UN warns Syria

UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu did not name the agent detected in samples by the OPCW.
But she said its presence “inside storage containers of large volume at a previously declared chemical weapons facility may imply undeclared production activities”.
Syria joined the Chemical Weapons Convention in September 2013, pressed by its close ally Russia, after a deadly chemical weapons attack that the West blamed on Damascus.
By August 2014, President Bashar Al Assad’s government declared
the destruction of its chemical weapons was complete
.
But Syria’s initial declaration of its chemical stockpiles and chemical weapons production sites to the OPCW is disputed

France has contributed €1 million ($1.2 million) towards supporting the activities of the Trust Fund for Syria Missions at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW),
Reuters reported the OPCW saying today.
The voluntary contribution was formalised on Friday by the Permanent Representative of the French Republic to the OPCW, Luis Vassy, and the OPCW's Director-General, Fernando Arias, at the OPCW's headquarters in The Hague, it added.
Last month Syria was stripped of its voting rights by member states at the OPCW global chemical weapons watchdog after its forces were found to have repeatedly used poison gas during the civil war which erupted in 2011 following the government crackdown on peaceful protests calling for a change in regime.

World body stigmatises Syria for gassing own people

Syria's voting rights in an international anti-chemical weapons body were suspended Wednesday, after 87 member states voted in favour of the sanctions, 15 against, and 34 abstained at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague. Proof Syria has been gassing its own people was "irrefutable", Luis Vassy, France's OPCW ambassador, who introduced the motion, said. The suspension was the first-ever in the OPCW's 24-year history.

Chemical arms watchdog weighs Syria sanctions

Chemical arms watchdog weighs Syria sanctions

World powers urged the global chemical weapons watchdog on Tuesday to hit Syria with unprecedented sanctions for alleged toxic gas attacks and for failing to declare its arsenal.
Syria faces the loss of its "rights and privileges" at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) after a probe found it had carried out three attacks in 2017. The regulator’s 193 member states are expected to vote on Wednesday on a proposal by France, backed by 46 countries, that would include freezing Syria’s voting rights at the Netherlands-based body. Syria and its ally Russia dismissed the sanctions threat, accusing Western powers of using the Hague-based OPCW as a "propaganda tool" to undermine Damascus in its ten-year civil war.
