Federal prosecutors on Monday announced that a Nigerian national has agreed to plead guilty in connection with a variety of online fraud schemes, including catfishing. Macpherson Osemwegie, 32, who lives in Boston, will plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud, the U.S. Attorney's Office for Massachusetts announced. Osemwegie and co-conspirators perpetrated romance scams, also known as catfishing, and other schemes designed to trick victims into sending money to bank accounts and debit cards that he controlled, the prosecution said. "To carry out the schemes, Osemwegie and his co-conspirators used false foreign passports in others’ names to open numerous bank accounts, and in turn directed the victims to send money to these accounts," the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement.The charge carries a sentence of up to 30 years in prison, five years of supervised release and a fine of up to $1 million. A plea hearing in the case has not yet been scheduled.
