In an age when motion pictures try to emotionally, and sometimes physically, batter the audience into submission, it’s nice to watch a quiet little film about real people living their real lives. It’s sort of a psychic palate cleanser. But it’s better if you’re watching them on either the best or worst day of those lives. Something still needs to actually happen in a movie, a reality which continues to elude so many pretentious arthouse flicks.

The terror of certain life-threatening situations is tough to translate to the screen. One of these is what a dispatcher in “Silo” calls a grain engulfment. Here, it happens when a teenage farmworker, Cody (Jack DiFalco), is sent into a multistory silo to break up clumps of corn. Someone negligently activates the machinery, and Cody becomes marooned in a quicksand-like rush of corn. Any movement might cause him to sink below the surface. And any effort to extract him must account for the forces exerted by 1.5 million pounds of corn.

Purveyors of indies both from the U.S. and internationally, Oscilloscope’s latest release finds them presenting a story from the American heartland. Starring Jack DiFalco, Danny Ramirez, and Jeremy Holm, Marshall Burnette’s
Silo is based on his acclaimed, Tribeca-selected documentary short of the same name. Following a festival premiere back in 2019, the drama is now set for a release this May and the first trailer has arrived.
As the official synopsis reads,
Silo follows a harrowing day in an American farm town and is inspired by a true story. Disaster strikes when teenage Cody becomes the victim of a grain entrapment accident. Family, neighbors, and first responders must put aside their differences to rescue him from drowning in the 50-foot tall silo where corn quickly turns to quicksand. Shedding light on an issue plaguing rural America, Silo shows how dangerous modern farming can be, while also highlighting the ways in which communities band together to look after one another.

Free digital screening showcases dangers of grain entrapment


DeKalb County Farm Bureau will host a free, virtual community screening of the film “SILO” on Saturday, Feb. 27, beginning at 6 p.m.
Inspired by true events, “SILO” follows a harrowing day in an American farm town and showcases the dangers of grain entrapment. Disaster strikes when teenager Cody Rose is entrapped in a 50-foot-tall grain bin. When the corn turns to quicksand, family, neighbors and first responders must put aside their differences to rescue Cody from drowning in the crop that has sustained their community for generations.
People who wish to view the film must register online at www.dekalbcounty.eventbrite.com. Only 500 viewing “spots” are available. Tickets will be awarded on a first come, first served basis, and registration will be open until the film begins. The Eventbrite ticket does not include a link to the film. That information will be shared directly by email.
