AMSTERDAM (JTA) — A mainstream daily in the Netherlands has apologized for a caricature depicting a Jewish political pollster and entrepreneur as a puppet master.
Pieter Klok, editor in chief of De Volkskrant, issued a statement Monday saying the image and trope “recall too many memories of anti-Semitic caricatures of the Nazi period and therefore should never have been published.”
The caricature, featured on the cover of the left-wing paper’s culture supplement Monday, depicted a leering Maurice de Hond holding a set of marionette strings. The article focused on a media campaign led by de Hond on behalf of a murderer he said was wrongly convicted in 1999.

The Volkskrant newspaper has apologised for publishing a cartoon featuring opinion pollster Maurice de Hond with anti-Semitic overtones.
The full-page cartoon depicted a grinning De Hond, who is of Jewish heritage, holding two sets of puppet strings in his oversized hands, echoing the ‘puppet master’ trope used in Nazi propaganda of the 1930s and 1940s.
Volkskrant editor Pieter Klok issued an apology in which he said the image was ‘too reminiscent’ of anti-Semitic cartoons of the past.

A number of prominent VVD members have gone public with their support for beleaguered caretaker prime minister Mark Rutte, who is facing increasing isolation in The Hague after ‘forgetting’ he had suggested moving a critical MP to a ‘new role’.
Former ministers in Rutte-led governments, including Henk Kamp, Annemarie Jorritsma and Fred Teeven have all given their public backing to the prime minister, and there is no-one within the party who is publicly doubting his leadership, the NRC reported.

Dutch election lifts lid on calls to leave EU – Netherlands misses UK | Politics | News

Dutch voters have been heading to the polls since Monday to elect their next Prime Minister.
Incumbent Mark Rutte is expected to win with 21-26 percent of the vote, compared with 11-16 percent for its closest rival, Geert Wilders' anti-Islam Freedom Party, which leads the parliamentary opposition.
But as Mr Wilders gains increasing support in the country, a question over the Dutch's feelings about the EU is also growing.
Maria Demertzis, from think-tank Bruegel told Euronews: "The UK departure has really meant that the Dutch have lost an ally in the way they think and operate.

Brexit represented the first occasion a country has left the EU in its current form, sending shockwaves through Europe. The UK's decision coincided with rising euroscepticism in some of the EU's biggest member states, and sparked speculation over who could be next to leave the bloc. In 2017, Dutch pollster Maurice de Hond undertook a survey in which 56 percent of Dutch people were in favour of leaving the EU if there was a referendum tomorrow. This led to Robert Oulds, Director of the think tank Bruges Group, warning that the Netherlands could leave the EU next.
