The HBO special, “The Human Chimp”, premieres on April 29. In 1964, Univ. of Oklahoma psychologist
MAURICE K. Temerlin (1924-1988), and his wife, Jane Whitbeck Temerlin, a clinical social worker, adopted a young chimpanzee who they named Lucy and raised her as one would raise a human child. At first, things went well. However, by the time a young grad student, Janis Carter, was hired (1976) by the Temerlins, the experiment had turned sour. Lucy was considered unpredictable and dangerous. The Temerlins told Carter to just feed Lucy and clean up after her. Not much later, they asked Carter to accompany them, and Lucy, to a facility in Africa where chimps were trained to go back into the wild. Carter was supposed to be in Africa for a few days, but stayed on for a decade, helping Lucy and some other chimps.

Lucy the Chimpanzee’s story is an animal rights nightmare. As told in the new documentary
Lucy the Human Chimp, psychologist Maurice Temerlin and his wife, Jane, bought the fuzzy primate from a roadside zoo in Florida that trained chimps to box human opponents when she was only two days old. (The zoo drugged Lucy’s mother by spiking a Coca-Cola with a tranquilizer.) From then on, the Temerlins raised their new “daughter” as human, teaching her to dress herself and use silverware. She even knew how to make her own gin and tonics.

Lucy had other plans. The chimp, raised as the Temerlins’ “daughter” as a part of a foolhardy, 60s zeitgeist experiment on the limits of nature versus nurture, immediately challenged Carter’s ability to hold the boundary. “She was formidable,” Carter recalls in an expansive, disarming interview that forms the backbone of Lucy the Human Chimp, a new HBO Max documentary on the primate used as an idealistic science experiment and the caretaker who stood with her to extraordinary ends.
A “very precise” signer with a 120-word vocabulary in American sign language, Lucy was “very arrogant, very condescending” about Carter’s inability to understand her. One day, Lucy motioned to Carter that she wanted to groom her. In a tense moment recreated in the film, Carter dropped the touch boundary. When Lucy asked for grooming in return, Carter reached her fingers through the chain-link cage. It was “a very special moment for me,” she recalls in the film, “and has nothing to do with theories of psychology or language or anything. It was our moment.”

Interesting History of Lucy the Human Chimp: The Ape Raised Like a Human

Apr 20, 2021 05:19 PM EDT
So much is now well known about the similarities we have with other primates, it is not difficult to forget that until relatively currently, we were still establishing precisely where we humans came to an end and apes began.
Through the 20th century, the chimpanzee's study specifically was a way to gain knowledge about ourselves: how we might cope in space, for instance, and how we might have communications without a common tongue.

The Temerlins Raised Lucy in Their Home
The Human Chimp, Lucy, a new KEO Films TV documentary, Channel 4, explores the meeting of those worlds through one special relationship story: that between a chimpanzee trained as a human, Lucy, and a graduate student employed to clean her cage, Janis Carter. Through the late 1960s, Lucy was the topic of studies that are high-profiled by psychologists Jane and Maurice Temerlin, apparently to explore the nurture versus nature limits.

Lucy The Human Chimp - I spent six years in African jungle with tragic ape who was raised as human baby and dumped

Invalid Date,
TEARS pricked Janis Carter’s eyes as chimpanzee Lucy held her in the tightest embrace of their ten-year relationship - then turned and walked into the rainforest.
The final hug signaled the moment that Lucy - raised as a human in a bizarre experiment in the United States - found her independence, six long years after the pair arrived in Africa.

A stirring double portrait.

Alex Parkinson's documentary is a first-person account of an extraordinary bond between a famous chimpanzee and the young caretaker who befriended her in the second half of her life.
There's no such thing as a human chimp, but half a century ago a chimpanzee's conditioning by her human "parents" famously blurred the lines. Lucy Temerlin lived in the suburbs with a psychologist and his wife, went for rides with them in the station wagon, and enjoyed the occasional gin and tonic. After a point, though — that point being puberty — she spent most of her time in a backyard chain-link cage because her size and aggressiveness were wreaking havoc on this nuclear family's domestic bliss.

What happened to chimp Lucy and where is Janice Carter now?

Lucy was a chimpanzee who was raised as a human in the 1960s.
In 1964, Dr Maurice Temerlin and his wife Jane adopted a two-day-old chimpanzee as part of a radical experiment.
Lucy lived with the psychology professor as a member of his family, and was given every home human comfort and treated as if she was their daughter.
She even made her own meals, mixed her own cocktails, read magazines, had her own pet cat and learnt sign language.
Crucially, perhaps, she had no contact with other chimpanzees.
However, when Lucy reached sexual maturity, she bit someone and threatened others.
