On June 18 he asked Gov. Kevin Stitt to declare a state of emergency, arguing that low staffing numbers have elevated the risk of riots and violence in state prisons. Heâs appeared on weekly Facebook Live broadcasts with Bobby Cleveland, director of the Oklahoma Corrections Professionals group, to provide updates on what heâs hearing from prison workers.
The Oklahoma House on Thursday passed two tax reform measures introduced by House Speaker Charles McCall. A proposal to reduce personal income tax garnered bipartisan support, largely because the bill included language to reinstate the refundable aspect of the earned income tax credit. House Republicans also overwhelmingly approved a bill to phase out over five years Oklahoma’s corporate income tax, which McCall described as “a bold idea” to attract more businesses to the state. “Oklahoma is on the short list in the race for jobs,” he said in a rare speech from the House floor. “We have made progress, but we are not winning the deals. These bills help get Oklahoma off the short end of the short list.”

Credit Rental Realities A state House committee approved a bill on Wednesday that would prevent courts from halting evictions, even during a health emergency like the COVID-19 pandemic. House Bill 1564 says courts have no discretion to extend terms of a lease. Some supporters, including bill author Rep. Tom Gann (R-Inola), said they’ve talked to landlords with tenants who simply refused to pay because they couldn’t be evicted during a federal moratorium. "These were people who some of them were not affected at all by the COVID, and they were doing everything that they could to skirt the rent and steal a man’s labor," Gann said.
