Heading into the busiest travel period, Canadians are being advised by Environment Canada to postpone non-essential travel, as almost the whole country battles extreme winter conditions from cold to blizzard warnings.
Place-d'Armes station on the Montreal metro is closed from December 1 to 20 to make way for COP15, taking place in the adjacent Palais des congrès. The STM said it temporarily shuttered the station at the request of authorities. Orange-line trains will otherwise run normally.
The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is strapped for cash and planning to cut back on services as a result. The transit agency released its 2023 budget showing a $77.7M deficit and citing inflation and pandemic recovery as major shortfall drivers. Some expenses were pushed to 2022 to cover emergency measures during the onset of COVID-19, around the time that pricey but necessary maintenance projects began on AZUR trains. The agency said "constructive discussions" are underway with financial partners to identify solutions. In the meantime, there are plans to reduce service in early 2023 meaning trains and buses will run less frequently.
"Rain, rain, go away; come again some other day," is definitely a song playing in many Montrealers' heads lately, but unfortunately, the Montreal weather forecast predicts that today simply will not be that day. Environment Canada currently has a rainfall warning in effect for Montreal and its surrounding areas.
