LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson held a news conference Thursday morning to discuss state Republicans' election reform bills.
She was joined by other state Democrats and Detroit-area groups interested in voting rights.
The proposed election bills would change how the state handles absentee ballots and early voting, among other things.

LANSING, Mich. — GOP members of the Michigan Senate Oversight Committee are asking Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson to testify at a hearing in the coming weeks.
Instead of having Benson participate in the hearing, her office plans to send Director of Elections Jonathan Brater in her place, according to a letter from the committee.
However, Sen. Edward McBroom says it’s “imperative” that the state’s chief election officer, Benson, also be present at a hearing on elections.
“The invitation for you to speak before the committee was provided well in advance, with a commitment to openness and transparency,” McBroom said. “To be respectful of your time and ensure the hearing is productive, I even agreed to a pre-committee meeting to allow you the ability to prepare your answers in advance and to understand the objectives of the committee. Your decision to refuse our invitation, while recently testifying in front of the United States Congress on election procedures and policies, directly managed by Mr. Brater, is disappointing and perplexing.”

MI GOP Wants Special Prosecutor, Subpoenas for Covid Nursing Home Deaths

17 Mar 2021
A group of Michigan GOP lawmakers says they plan to issue subpoenas and bring in a special prosecutor to obtain data that would help explain why coronavirus patients were placed with non-coronavirus patients in nursing homes.
“This is a real issue as to why was that done, what were the ramifications, and what is the data,” state Sen. Jim Runestad (R-White Lake) told WJBK. “We are not going to get that, at least from the attorney general.”
Runestad (pictured) claimed House oversight committee hearings, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, and lawsuits had been blocked by state officials.
The lawmakers also claim there was a discrepancy between the number of nursing home deaths reported to federal officials and the number of deaths reported to state officials.

Data and Science? 42,000 Seat Stadium Outside, Only 1,000 Allowed in for Opening Day in Detroit

(AP Photo/Carlos Osorio)
I suppose I should look at the bright side here and recall that last year we had no Opening Day at all until June. Yet that one was 100% closed off and no one was allowed in the stadium the whole season.
This is still crap.
When the Detroit Tigers open their season each and every year at Comerica Park in downtown Detroit, it is truly a local holiday. No matter how cold the weather is, hundreds of thousands of people in the whole state take some time to tune in to the game that reminds us summer is around the corner. The atmosphere in and around the ballpark is incredibly special and it is always a sellout and a must-get ticket to have.

LANSING, Mich. — Governor Gretchen Whitmer is facing a rash of criticism after a confidential separation agreement came to light, showing former Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director Robert Gordon received a $155,000 payout after abruptly resigning from his post in January.
The state GOP and Republican lawmakers are now calling on Attorney General Dana Nessel to open an investigation into that agreement and others. They say the deal raises more questions about the governor’s response to the pandemic and the transparency of her office.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Just hours after the Barry County GOP censured him over his impeachment vote, U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer, R-Grand Rapids, spoke with FOX 17’s Aaron Parseghian.
The Barry County GOP was the second county-level Republican party in Meijer's district to censure him.
“I still want to continue to maintain strong relationships with our county-level parties and with all of the folks who are active,” Meijer said. "Now, at the end of the day, we're not going to see eye to eye on everything."
The freshman congressman was one of 10 House Republicans to vote to impeach former President Donald Trump after the violent attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6.

Michigan lawmakers plan to convene for the first time in weeks to lengthen Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's emergency declaration amid the coronavirus pandemic but are at odds over the extension and whether the session is even necessary. The Republican-led Legislature is scheduled to meet Tuesday, April 7, 2020, three weeks after last voting. Shirkey's spokeswoman said He thinks we can come to some middle ground in terms of the extension, and that doesn't preclude it from being extended again if were necessary at some point. Ron Weiser Wins Election As Michigan Republican Party Chair

Weiser says he is ready to make Governor Gretchen Whitmer a one term governor. His win follows recent accusations made by the now former Chairwoman Laura Cox, that Weiser paid $200,000 to Republican Stanley Grot to withdraw as a candidate for the race for Michigan’s Secretary of State in 2018.
Weiser called the allegation baseless and a desperate attempt to smear his name. In a statement to Gongwer he said his focus will be on rebuilding the party.
"Our overwhelming victory today is just the beginning. The beginning of our road to victory in 2022. The beginning of a better, brighter future for our children, for our families. The beginning of unifying our party. The skirmishes of yesterday are over," Mr. Weiser said.
