HAINAN (Global Times): Hainan, the tropical resort destination known as China's Hawaii, is on track to become the biggest duty-free market in the world in the next two years, a report released on Friday (May 7) showed.
It illustrated how China's policy of building a world-class shopping haven has converted overseas shopping to domestic consumption, strengthening the plan of building Hainan into a free trade port on par with Dubai and Singapore.
The report, jointly released by KPMG China and Moodie Davitt Report at the ongoing China International Consumer Products Expo (CICPE), said Hainan's offshore duty-free sector has been "the rising star" of global duty-free and travel retail since its inception in 2011.

HAIKOU, May 8 (Xinhua) -- The Hainan free trade port (FTP) will likely become the world's biggest duty-free market in the near term if it continues on its current growth curve, according to a report jointly released by KPMG China and The Moodie Davitt Report.
By the end of 2020, offshore duty-free business in Hainan was worth approximately 5 billion U.S. dollars, boosted by an enhanced shopping policy, said the report. It was released on the sideline of the ongoing inaugural China International Consumer Products Expo.
In July 2020, the province increased its annual per capita duty-free shopping limit from 30,000 yuan (about 4,638 U.S. dollars) to 100,000 yuan.

China's enhancement of offshore duty-free shopping policies has boosted the growth of local tourism consumption and trade in South China's Hainan province and promoted the construction of the Hainan international tourism consumption center, said officials with the provincial government.

Hainan has sold about 98 billion yuan ($15 billion) in duty-free goods in the past 10 years. At that time, more than 25 million people shopped and about 120 million items were sold, according to a recent news conference marking the 10th anniversary of offshore duty-free shopping in the tropical island province.
