Food & Wine. Focusing on producers of chocolate bars, the magazine named Madhu one of the 50 finest chocolate makers and chocolate shops in the U.S.
“Harshit Gupta and Elliott Curelop source quality cacao from the Tumaco region of Colombia — a favorite among some of the most accomplished makers on this list — and then go wild with the flavors, drawing on Gupta’s Indian childhood for inspiration. Saffron, black pepper from Kerala, cloves, and coriander all make welcome appearances,”

Tucupi, a spicy sauce to stop Amazon deforestation

Stopping the deforestation that is advancing over the La Asunción reservation, in the department of Guaviare, Colombia, is becoming increasingly urgent. Nancy del Pilar Padua Palacios, an Indigenous Tucano, has a solution: "It is the planting of ají (chilli), a product of our culture," says the 26-year-old leader, while she records yellow, green and red chilli peppers with her phone. These will later be dried to make tucupí, an Amazonian hot sauce that is produced in Guaviare.
The land, where Nancy and 146 other people from the Wanano, Tucano, Desano, Cubeo, Paeces and mestizo families live, has too many ‘open wounds’ from deforestation, which has been increasing for years. According to Nancy, 45% of the territory, a total of 300 hectares of the 702 hectares that make up the La Asunción reservation, have already been converted into pasture for cattle and monoculture plantations.

Colombia human rights update March 2021

Colombia human rights update March 2021
Despite urgent recommendations from international organisations, including the United Nations, certain security mechanisms have still not been implemented, while there is a backlog of requests for protective measures for at-risk individuals.

As Colombian authorities appear incapable of containing the human rights violations taking place across the country – even in situations involving state security forces – March saw more murders of social activists and former combatants in the peace process. Despite urgent recommendations from international organisations, including the United Nations, certain security mechanisms have still not been implemented, while there is a backlog of requests for protective measures for at-risk individuals.

While Colombia, Ecuador and some parts of Peru are less explored than some more established mining jurisdictions, the three countries feature a rich mining history and prospective geology. Below, we showcase eight companies active in South America.

Banditry: Beyond the Shoot-on-Sight Order

Every time the Federal Government of Nigeria takes one step forward, they seem to take another 10 steps backwards! It seems that those in power do not quite understand that fighting insecurity successfully, demands a holistic approach. It goes beyond shooting on sight, those armed with AK 47s in the forests. It goes beyond using Super Tucano Jets and satellites, to monitor criminals from above. It also goes beyond seeking external assistance from military contractors, to join this fight. And certainly, it goes beyond rhetorics, motivational speaking and the brave words of encouragement that we are used to hearing from Government spokespersons. Interestingly, in recent times, we have not heard anything about the arrival of the Super Tucano Jets which we paid almost $500 million for in 2018, to assist in the fight against insecurity. Knowing Nigeria, there would have been a grand reception ceremony to receive the aircrafts on arrival, bigger than the one that heralded the arrival of the Covid-19 vaccines! It is not only the Yorubas that are the merry making tribe of Africa; the Federal Government too, is not doing so badly in that regard. Even though we have a population of about 200 million people, Government could only bring in vaccines for 1.5 % of the population (which it didn’t even pay for); and even though this is rather remiss of Government, it was well celebrated, as if something very special had been done. Yet, Section 17 (3)(c) & (d) of the Constitution mandates inter alia, that the health of Nigerians be safeguarded by Government, and adequate medical and health facilities be provided for all persons – something which successive governments (present company very much included) have failed to do.

Peru's Cacataibos, tired of being killed, say only indigenous justice remains

2 minutes read
By Fernando Gimeno
Lima, Mar 9 (efe-epa).- “Only indigenous justice remains to us,” Herlin Odicio, the leader of the Cacataibo tribe, said.
He is tired of the impunity with which his “brothers” are being murdered for opposing drug traffickers and illegal logging in their territories in the Peruvian Amazon.
In less than a year, four Cacataibo and two other members of the Ashaninka tribe have been murdered in the same region for confronting the invaders of their native lands, the last two in just the past three weeks, although Odicio said in an interview with EFE that this has been going on for some time.

Fire destroys historic church in Mexico

Arica, Chile, Jun 26, 2019 / 04:01 pm (CNA).- The Diocese of San Marcos de Arica expressed Monday its concern over the humanitarian conditions of hundreds of people, mostly Venezuelans, held up at the Chacalluta border crossing between Peru and Chile.
Chile recently imposed stricter controls on those entering its territory, as the number of Venezuelan emigrants swells. More than 4 million Venezuelans have emigrated since 2015.
Since June 22, to enter Chile a passport with visa, proof of the money to support one’s stay, and a letter of invitation or a hotel reservation are required.
Since 2018, for residency there is required a temporary residency visa valid for one year and renewable for the same period, no criminal record, and other documents.
