Concerning Mr. James VanSciver’s letter: I did not notice your presence or voice at Cape Minority Liaisn Committee when changing the Cape District’s approach to hiring minority teachers more representative of the community, or including books with Black authors, including Bryan Stevenson’s young adult version of “Just Mercy” or examining the disciplinary discrepancies between whites and Black students for similar offenses which resulted in an overhaul of the Code of Conduct. I sit on the Governor’s DREJ Wealth Creation and Education forums but did not run across your name there either. I frequently attend the two remaining Black churches in Lewes on Sunday, the most segregated day of the week, and do not remember seeing you either in the pews or hearing your birthday or anniversary announcements. I have talked to some of the longtime Black leaders in the community as well as residents, and did not hear your name mentioned either. I am a relatively new transplant, but if you are Lewes born and bred, perhaps you witnessed Lewes’ Jim Crow period with a separate movie theater and churches, and local African-American/Black residents, including expectant mothers, forced to enter and to remain hospitalized in Beebe Hospital’s basement which also at that time housed the morgue.

WASHINGTON, DC — A little over an estimated half billion dollars in COVID-19 relief aid is headed for Nassau County to help its local governments with unplanned pandemic expenses under provisions in the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan.
U.S. Rep. Thomas Suozzi (D-Long Island, Queens) called the package a game changer in a Zoom news conference Thursday where he discussed how its provisions will directly benefit the fiscally hard-hit region with Nassau County Executive Laura Curran.
