Washington [US], February 2 (ANI): British actor and film producer Naomi Watts is all set to play the lead in Polish film director Malgorzata Szumowska's 'Infinite Storm'.
According to Variety, the highly awaited flick helmed by Szumowska is a collaborative project with big banners Bleecker Street and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions on board.
Szumowska's last project, 'Never Gonna Snow Again', has been nominated as Poland's candidate for the Oscars' international feature film accolade.
Expressing her excitement for working with big banners and rolling in Watts, she said, "I'm delighted to be working with such great partners as Sony, Bleecker, Maven, and, of course with Naomi Watts whom I have admired and wanted to work with for a long time,"

'Never Gonna Snow Again'
"We took the risk of making a film that's not based on some direct, straight-forward story," say directors Malgorzata Szumowska and Michal Englert about 'Never Gonna Snow Again,' a social satire about an enigmatic masseur with mystical powers.
In the opening scene of
Never Gonna Snow Again, Poland's contender for the 2021 international film Oscar, we see a muscular man step out of a mystical forest and make his way to a concrete, Soviet-style government building.
He's a foreigner — from Ukraine — and is there to secure a residency permit. There's no love coming from the face of the grey bureaucrat behind the desk but, with a wave of his hands, and some whispered words in Russian, the bureaucrat falls into a deep slumber. The muscular man stamps his own documents and walks out the door. As he does, the camera pans to a record player, which magically springs into action. Shostakovich.

Oscars: How The International Film Landscape Is Shaping Up In A Difficult Year

Oscars: How The International Film Landscape Is Shaping Up In A Difficult Year
Deadline
1/14/2021
In what has been the strangest year on recent record for myriad reasons, the International Feature Film Oscar race is not immune to the impact of Covid. Along with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tweaking submission deadlines, many films vying for recognition in the International Feature category have experienced a lack of physical festival exposure and the customary resultant buzz, as so many events were canceled or moved online throughout the past nine months. In several cases, films selected by their respective countries actually debuted way back in the 2019 festival season.

Love, fear, secrets and inhumanity: 4 international films

After a year when Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” defied history and won the best picture Oscar, other international film contenders were expected to expand their influence throughout all Oscar categories. The COVID-19 pandemic had other ideas, and that anticipated new normal may be on hold this particular awards season.
With most of the world’s major film festivals becoming virtual affairs, the opportunity for publicity-friendly standing ovations and word-of-mouth moments have seemingly evaporated. There is a chance, however, that with an extended 2020 awards season, one of these international film submissions could still break out.
“La Llorona”
Guatemala
When Guatemalan filmmaker Jayro Bustamante decided to craft a film about the genocide perpetrated on the nation’s native Maya population, he knew it would be a challenge. The government continues to insist the massacres didn’t occur, and capturing the attention of the general population is no easy task. The answer was “La Llorona,” a drama with supernatural elements that earned critical acclaim from festival audiences around the globe.

Oscars' International Feature Race: Has 'Parasite' Ushered in a Broader Acceptance of Genre in the Category?

Bong Joon Ho's 2020 Oscar winner has paved the way for more adventurous entries in the international feature category, long the home of solemn message movies and staid historical dramas.
Parasite has blown open the doors of the international feature category, long thought to be the purview of solemn message movies, to the experimental and the strange. If a movie that shifts in tone among thriller, horror and straight-out farce can win the international feature Oscar, then maybe other overseas films that are even more adventurous with genre have a shot this awards season.
