Aretha Franklin: Preacher's Daughter

Aretha Franklin: Preacher’s Daughter
Aretha Franklin, born a musical prodigy, was nurtured by her father, Reverend C.L. Franklin, and his numerous houseguests of gospel and R&B renown.
Our recent glimpse of Tony Scherman’s biography in progress, I Gave My Heart and Soul to You: The Triumph of Aretha Franklin, told the story of how, when, where, and with whom one of 20th-century pop music’s towering geniuses recorded her signature song, “Respect”. This second excerpt takes us back to Genesis, as it were. “Aretha: Preacher’s Daughter” tells the story, in-depth, of a little girl’s immersion in the music of the Baptist Church.

Nat Geo premiering series on Aretha Franklin's life, gospel roots

"Genius: Aretha" series cover | Nat Geo
National Geographic's latest season of its anthology series, "Genius: Aretha," will explore the gospel roots and faith of music legend Aretha Franklin. The series, which airs next month, stars Oscar-nominee Cynthia Erivo, who portrays the queen of soul.
The Emmy-winning anthology series dramatizes the stories of the world’s most “brilliant innovators, their extraordinary achievements and their volatile, passionate and complex personal relationships,” the network says.
The third season of the limited series will premiere with back-to-back episodes over four consecutive nights, starting on March 21.
“Without knowing how to read music, Franklin taught herself to play the piano; at the young age of 12, she began to record songs and sing on gospel tours with her father. She signed her first record deal at age 18 with Columbia Records. In 1966, she moved to Atlantic Records, where she recorded many of her most iconic songs. In 1979, she began a 40-year friendship and partnership with Clive Davis, which produced a number of hit songs,” the series will follow her life as detailed in her bio.

KEEPING THE FAITH | Why mentoring is a biblically-based concept

KEEPING THE FAITH | Why mentoring is a biblically based concept
There is purpose in extending yourself to empower others to stir up their gifts. I encourage you to ask God through prayer to show you whom He wants you to invest in. Be open to the wonderful possibilities of equipping someone to fulfill their purpose.

As a young man, I circulated petitions for someone seeking office.
I approached former Councilwoman Darlene Rogers at a community event. Always straightforward, she quickly scanned the document as I touted the virtues and vision of my candidate. Mrs. Rogers then exercised her trademark behavior of grasping the eyeglasses while seriously pondering deep thoughts which had convinced me she was supportive and I had nailed it.

music in 2016. he mentioned how powerful her voice was, how much was around her musically. she would come with these incredible, massive pieces of equipment, and obviously the bands she would bring in were huge. but the biggest moments that she would have on stage were about these t10 to 20 minutes of her playing piano in her sets. the spotlight was on her and the powerful voice really shown through. her roots here, her contributions to detroit, as you hear more music playing, really meant a lot to the people here. they meant a lot to me growing up. back to you. >> no kidding. a city which is the heart of so many great musicians and aretha franklin. thanks, steve, we'll stay close to you. joining us on the phone is glen turman, aretha's second husband. glen, you were actually married at new bethel baptist church where steve is, is that correct? >> oh, yes. i remember it well.

baptist. we've been hearing these incredible tributes people driving down the street blasting aretha franklin, some younger than me, some obviously much older that grew up on her work, but everybody can appreciate the contribution she made not only to music but also to this city. again, i mentioned new bethel baptist. this was really a center for the civil rights movement. her father, c.l. franklin, the street which is just perpendicular here to my left, it is named after him. he was a huge figure in the civil rights movement, and then when she started growing up and started singing in the church, famous people from all over the country would come to visit him. they would hear this incredible piano and in the next room come to find a five-year-old girl on the piano. of course, that's aretha franklin. she grew up singing in the church. she grew up releasing sort of these radio broadcasts. it was sort of a first for gospel music, especially here, and then she created her first album at 14. so detroit has a huge, lasting
