Louis Aguirre was born in Cuba in 1968 and received a B.A. in composition from the Instituto Superior de Artes in Havana, where he studied with Harold Gramatges and Roberto Valera. He continued his studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and completed his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Ãrhus in Denmark. His music has been commissioned and performed by musicians including the Axyz Ensemble, Residencias Ensemble, Arditti String Quartet, Neo PercusiÃ³n TrÃo, and the Santiago, CamagÃ¼ey, and Havana Symphonies, among others. His works have been presented in leading contemporary music festivals, including Gaudeamus Week, Festival Internacional de Alicante, Foro de MÃºsica Nueva in Mexico, Festival Internacional de Musica de Morelia, Internationale Ferienkurse fÃ¼r neue musik, Darmstadt, and others. From 1995â2002 Aguirre was the general conductor and artistic director of the CamagÃ¼ey Symphony Orchestra, as well as guest conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Havana and the Symphony Orchestra of Santiago de Cuba. In addition, he was a professor of the CamagÃ¼ey Music Conservatory, and artistic director of the International Festival of Contemporary Music (1996â2002) in CamagÃ¼ey.

Spring Festival. For the first day of Tippet Rise’s Spring Festival, two films have been captured at the DiMenna Center. The first features violinist Katie Hyun—founding member of the Amphion String Quartet—performing Vytautas Barkauskas’s Partita for violin solo. For the second film, Tippet Rise’s Artistic Advisor Pedja Mužijevic performs in a program titled
Is It Real (A Loving Homage to Surrealism), which includes music and spoken word by Satie, Schwitters, and Antheil. At 7:30 pm ET there will be a “backstage” gathering via Zoom, giving artists the opportunity to discuss their performances, followed by the release of the films. View here.
