Ganga dredging project to stop ghats' erosion nears completion | Varanasi News

Varanasi: The ongoing dredging work in the Ganga on the seven-km stretch between Ramnagar Fort and Malviya rail-road bridge for reducing velocity of water flow that has been eroding the ghats and threatening the historical structures is nearing completion and the second stream is taking final shape.
The piles of sand removed from the Ganga has helped create a sand island that could be used to host various activities, including events like the famous Rann Mahotsava held in Kutch, Gujarat.
The Rs 11.95 crore project is likely to be completed by June 15.
“We had started this project worth Rs 11.95 crores in March. Maximum work of creating a new channel of Ganga stream on the right bank has been completed and the project will be over by June 15. The work done so far has turned the sandbanks between the two channels in an island shape,” said irrigation department’s executive engineer Pankaj Verma, who is supervising the project, while talking to TOI on Monday.

In a first, an Indian state has recruited 13 transgender officers to the police force. The police of Chhattisgarh announced last month that the new recruits were selected as constables after written and physical examinations were first conducted in 2017 and 2018.
The news has brought cheer to the local transgender community, as it marks a significant shift in the stigma that has kept 92 per cent of them out of the country’s mainstream economic activity.
“It feels like a dream. Till now, my community has been stereotyped and dismissed for being capable of doing no more than beg for a living,” said Tanushree Saha, 24, one of the new recruits. “But as constables, the next generation will see us in new light. I’m proud that Chhattisgarh is the first state to have achieved this feat. Other states will also follow suit, I think. And we shouldn’t stop here. There should be transgender representation in every state department.”

My sons' pediatrician, Dr. Anjali Verma, was taken by COVID-19

With each passing day, we know someone closer and closer who lost his or her life due to COVID-19.
In our case, it's the pediatrician who has treated my sons, Albert and Lennon, for 14 years. Dr. Anjali Verma passed away on Nov. 24, according to her Facebook page. She was a wonderful woman, beloved by her patients, who was approachable 24/7 and truly cared about our boys as well as every one of her patients.
Verma's family has provided us with these well-deserved words through email for an incredible physician and beautiful human being:
"Dr. Anjali Verma was a respected physician who saved hundreds of children’s lives over her forty-year career as a neonatologist and pediatrician. She immigrated to the United States from India in 1981. After completing her residency in pediatrics and fellowship training in neonatology, she settled in New Jersey. She served as the staff neonatologist at CentraState Medical Center for 14 years and then started a pediatric practice while continuing to work part-time as a neonatologist at several hospitals in NJ. Over the years, she took care of numerous babies and provided unwavering support to new mothers taking care of their children. After decades of providing compassionate care to her patients, she continued to serve the community by starting a medical spa to help others realize their beauty and confidence."
