Headlines for Thursday, November 24th

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White's office is reminding the public that the extension on driver's license and state ID expiration dates ends soon. Drivers were given more time to get their licenses renewed during the pandemic, but that extension is coming to an end on December 1st. Secretary of State Spokesperson Harry Haupt says they have tried to alert people about their options. For more information and to see if your local driver's services facility takes appointments, visit the website: ilsos.gov Edwards County Circuit Judge Michael J. Valentine rejected a defense request to reduce the bond on an Altamont man accused of attempted murder in Edwards County. Sean Adam Curtiss, 42 had petitioned the court to have his bond reduced from the $1 million the court set on September 16. After rejecting the motion for reduction in bond, Judge Valentine confirmed a trial date of December 6 and a final pretrial date of November 22. Curtiss has been formally charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm, both are Class-X felonies, aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class-1 felony and being a felon in possession of a firearm with a prior conviction, a Class-2 felony. Curtiss is currently being held in the White County jail at Carmi for Edwards County officials under $1 million bond. The shooting incident happened on August 21st in rural Edwards County. The victim has been identified as Malinda Williams of Carmi. Ms. Williams revealed she received gunshot wounds to a leg, her side and chest. If convicted of the most serious of the charges, the Class-X felonies, Curtiss faces up to 30 years in prison. The Flora City Council met Monday afternoon and quickly breezed through a light agenda. The meeting began with approval of the agenda as well as the consent agenda, the latter including both the police report and building and zoning report for October, meeting minutes for November 7, city of Flora bills through November 17 and the treasurer's report for October. The only comment offered during Mayor Rick Slaughter's polling of commissioners came from Linda Spicer who thanked everyone for attending last week's Moonlight Madness event. City Administrator Mike Stanford presented two items for consideration that were each approved by a unanimous vote. The first was an ordinance accepting a $1,500 bid for the sale of 203 E. Scudamore Street. The second was approval of the ordinance approving an extension of a lease agreement with B & M Truck Equipment, Inc. Also, in Treasurer Jeremy Henderson's absence, Mike Stanford presented an ordinance for the levy and assessment of taxes for the Flora Police Pension Fund for the fiscal year starting May 1, 2023 and ending April 30, 2024. Commissioners approved the ordinance which remains the same at $200,000. With all agenda items complete, the meeting moved into closed session, the results of which were not immediately available. The Richland County Recreation Council will have its Annual Turkey Trot this coming Thursday morning, on Thanksgiving Day 2022. Starting at 8:00 in the morning, the race will also end at Musgrove Park in Olney with no prior registration or sign up needed. A $10 per runner donation is suggested with all proceeds going to the RCRC in Olney. All are invited out to the morning run this Thursday morning, Thanksgiving morning, in Olney. Work is progressing on the Evergreen Bark Park at Evergreen Hollow Park. Park District Director Jeff Althoff said most of the fencing should be in place by week's end. Althoff said some concrete paving will be necessary and hopes that will be undertaken in the next couple of weeks. City workers are to help park district crews with the concrete work. The park board agreed to approve changes in the Effingham/Effingham County Enterprise Zone guidelines. The changes address abatements for residential projects. The Board also reviewed the proposed tax levy for the coming fiscal year. The park district will receive increased revenues due to the end of a tax increment financing district, so some of the levies will be reduced. The levy will not be 5% or more above what was extended for taxes last year, so a Truth in Taxation hearing will not be necessary. Thanksgiving is the leading day for home fires involving cooking equipment, with four times the average number occurring. Ranges and cook-tops account for almost three out of every five home fires reported involving cooking, with ovens accounting for 13% of those fires. Cooking causes half (49%) of all reported home fires and more than two of every five (42%) home fire injuries, and it is the second leading cause of home fire deaths (20%). According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), each year from 2017 to 2019, an estimated average of 2,300 residential building fires were reported to fire departments in the U.S. on Thanksgiving Day. These fires caused an estimated annual average of 5 deaths, 25 injuries and $26 million in property loss. U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 166,100 home fires per year involving cooking equipment. "Kitchens will be a very busy spot in the house this coming Thanksgiving. It's important to keep cooking safety a top priority while preparing your Thanksgiving dinner," said Acting Illinois State Fire Marshal Dale Simpson. "I encourage everyone to make sure your cooking appliances are in proper working order, and if broken, have them repaired by a professional. By following the tips below your holiday will be free from any fire related incidents." "I am sure everyone has their own special recipe, l have one as well, and it's called a safety recipe," said Chicago Fire Commissioner, Annette Nance-Holt. "First, please wear protective gear in case oil splatters. Secondly, deep fry in an open, outdoor area. Deep frying a turkey should never take place inside and that includes inside a garage." Here are some tips to keep in mind when preparing food, not just during the holiday season but all year. Never leave food that you are frying, boiling, grilling or broiling unattended! If you leave the kitchen, even for a short amount of time, turn off the stove. Frying a Turkey has become more popular in recent years. Make sure to not overfill oil in the fryer. Fill the pot you plan to use to fry the turkey with water and place the turkey in. This will help to determine how much oil is needed without causing oil to spill out when you are ready to fry, which could lead to a fire. Use the turkey fryer outdoors ONLY! Make sure the turkey is completely thawed and dry before frying. Use long cooking gloves that protect hands and arms when you handle the pot! Create a "Kid Free Zone" of at least three feet around the stove or anywhere you are preparing hot food or drinks. Keep the area around the stove clear of towels, papers, potholders, or anything that can burn. Check your oven before preheating to ensure there are no items inside. If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you when food is ready. If there is a fire in the oven, keep the door shut and turn off the heat. Smother small flames in a pan by sliding a lid over the pan. Turn off the burner and leave the lid over the pan while it cools. If you have any doubt fighting a small fire, just get out! Call 9-1-1 or your emergency number from outside the home.
