Frontiers | Diversity of Microbial Eukaryotes Along the West Antarctic Peninsula in Austral Spring

During a cruise from October to November 2019 along the West Antarctic Peninsula between 64.32ºS and 68.37ºS, we assessed the diversity and composition of the active microbial eukaryotic community within three size fractions: micro- (>20µm), nano- (20-5µm), and pico-size fractions (5-0.2µm). The communities and the environmental parameters displayed latitudinal gradients, and we observed a strong similarity in the microbial eukaryotic communities as well as the environmental parameters, between the sub-surface and the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) depths. Chlorophyll concentrations were low, and the mixed layer was shallow for most of the 17 stations sampled. The richness of the microplankton was higher in Marguerite Bay (our southernmost stations), compared to more northern stations, while the diversity for the nano- and pico-plankton was relatively stable across latitude. The microplankton communities were dominated by autotrophs, mostly diatoms, while mi ....

The burden of aortic aneurysm in China from 1990 to 2019: findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 | BMC Public Health

Aortic aneurysm (AA) is a global public health concern. However, little is known about the disease burden of AA in China. Following the general analytic strategy used in the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019, we analyzed the mortality and years of life lost (YLLs) due to AA, stratified by sex, age, and province-level region in China from 1990 to 2019. The temporal trend of AA burden in China was analyzed and the main attributable risk factors for AA in China were also explored. In China, the total AA deaths were 17,038 (95% UI: 14,392-19,980) in 2019, an increase of 136.1% compared with that in 1990, with an age-standardized death rate (ASDR) of 0.93 (95% UI: 0.79-1.08) per 100,000 person-years in 2019, a decrease of 6.8%. Meanwhile AA caused 378,578 (95% UI: 315,980-450,479) YLLs in 2019, an increase of 102.6% compared with that in 1990, with a crude YLL rate of 26.6 (95% UI: 22.2-31.7) per 100,000 person-years, an increase of 68.6%. The AA mortality and YLLs were higher in ma ....

Frontiers | Florivory and Pollination Intersection: Changes in Floral Trait Expression Do Not Discourage Hummingbird Pollination

Many flowers are fed on by florivores, but we know little about if and how feeding on flowers affects their visual and chemical advertisement and nectar resource, which could disrupt pollination. Here, we investigated if damages caused by florivores compromise a Neotropical hummingbird-pollination system, by modifying the floral advertisements and the nectar resource. We surveyed natural florivory levels and patterns, examined short-term local effects of floral damages caused by the most common florivore, a caterpillar, on floral outline, intra-floral colour pattern and floral scent, as well as on the amount of nectar. Following, we experimentally tested if the most severe florivory pattern affected hummingbird pollination. The feeding activity of the most common florivore did not alter the intra-floral colour pattern, floral scent, and nectar volume, but changed the corolla outline. However, this change did not affect hummingbird-pollination. Despite visual floral cues being important ....
