It is a “I once was lost, but now I am found” story. The deconversion narrative has a certain triumphalism to it in an “I escaped captivity” sense, but it tends to lack the “I escaped to some new hope” sense of the testimony. While the testimony tends to dwell on the benefits of the new religious belief, the deconversion narrative tends to dwell on the negative experiences the person had. Frequently the deconversion narrative includes discussion of mental health difficulties the person still suffers due to the trauma they endured at the hands of religion, and perhaps the person’s current activism against religious or political positions.
