Guadalquiver) BAGO CITY, Negros Occidental - The city government here honored homegrown 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) boxing medalists Rogen Ladon and James Palicte during a heroes' welcome event at the Bantayan Park on Monday. Mayor Nicholas Yulo led city officials in paying tribute to Ladon, who won the gold in the flyweight division, and Palicte, who took the bronze in the lightweight class. "I'm sure that this will serve as an inspiration not only to the youth of Bago, but also in the whole province, that they would look up to sports heroes and emulate what they do for themselves while giving honor to their hometown," Yulo said. During the program, which followed the motorcade, Ladon and Palicte, both 28, received cash incentives for showing "exemplary performance" during the SEAG in Hanoi, Vietnam from May 12 to 23 as stated in a resolution approved by the City Council on May 25. Ladon was granted PHP50,000 while Palicte got PHP30,000. Their four coaches, including Roel Velasco, Reynaldo Galido, Joegen Ladon and Mitchel Martinez, received PHP10,000 each. "Show hardwork and determination in all things. You can fulfill your dreams if you have dedication in what you do," said Ladon, who defended his title after winning the gold during the 30th SEAG in Manila in 2019. A 2016 Rio Olympics campaigner, Ladon also bagged a silver medal during the 2018 Asian Games held in Indonesia. Meanwhile, Palicte said he had also hoped to defend his gold medal finish in Manila, but physical difficulties prevented him from making it to the finals. "Do your best, train well. Pray hard, discipline yourself. Those are the most important things," he told aspiring boxers. Bago City is known for producing some of the country's top boxers such as Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco, a silver medalist in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. During the event, the city government also recognized the accomplishments of Bago teams in the 2022 Philippine Series Softball Tournament that it hosted from May 16 to 23. The city's Juniors Softball League team, which emerged as national champions, received a PHP50,000 cash incentive while the Majors and Seniors teams, which placed first and second runners-up, respectively, got PHP30,000 and PHP20,000. All their 12 coaches were each given PHP5,000. "By winning national and international tournaments, these athletes have made our country proud and have shown to the world the spirit of Filipino competitiveness and excellence. These outstanding performances of our athletes deserve to be commended," the City Council headed by Vice Mayo Ramon Torres said. Meanwhile, two other Negrense boxers also brought home medals from the 31st SEAG- Ian Clark Bautista of Binalbagan town, who won the gold in the bantamweight class, and La Carlota City's Riza Pasuit, who pocketed the bronze in the women's featherweight division.(PNA) }

(Asian Boxing Confederation photo) PHUKET, Thailand - Filipino boxers Rogen Ladon, Riza Pasuit and Hergie Bacyadan snagged gold medals to lead the Philippines' triumphant campaign in the 2022 Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament at the posh Angsana Laguna Phuket Resort Hotel here on Saturday. The reigning Southeast Asian Games flyweight king Ladon earned the nod of three judges for a 3-2 split decision upset over defending Asian Games titlist and 2019 AIBA World Championships silver winner Amit Panghal of India. Ladon, a Rio Olympics veteran, fought methodically to clinch points in the first two rounds before surviving a late flurry from Amit in the final round. Later on, SEA Games 2019 silver medal finisher Pasuit dictated the tempo right from the get-go with solid counterpunching against Italy's Alessia Mesiano to rule the women's lightweight division. "I'm very happy. I expected the experience from Rogen to come out today. As for Riza, she is a very good counter-puncher and a great boxer moving forward," said Philippine boxing team head coach Don Abnett, who is accompanied by coaches Roel Velasco, Ronald Chavez, Reynaldo Galido and Mitchel Martinez. Bacyadan, a wushu athlete-turned-boxer, capped off the national boxing squad's successful stint with another gold after dominating Vietnam's Tran Thi Oanh Nhi, 5-0, in the women's middleweight category. Aside from the medals, Ladon, Pasuit and Bacyadan also received USD2,000 (more than PHP100,000) apiece as top finishers in the tournament organized by the Thailand Boxing Association headed by its president and concurrent Asian Boxing Federation president Pichai Chunhavajira. Meanwhile, Ian Clark Bautista (men's featherweight) and Aira Villegas (women's flyweight) settled for silver after faltering against higher-ranked opponents Serik Termizhanov of Kazakhstan and Nguyen Thi Tam of Vietnam. With the three golds and two silvers, the PH boxing team already eclipsed its medal haul in the 2019 edition (1 gold, 1 bronze) and 2018 iteration (1-1-2 gold-silver-bronze) when it seized the overall championship together with the host nation. "I think we've exceeded our expectations because as you know, our boxers have come from a long period of inactivity. We're happy with where we are right now," said Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) president Ed Picson, who is leading the Philippine delegation along with secretary-general Marcus Manalo. After the Thailand Open joined by 14 federations across Asia, Europe and Oceania, Picson said the Filipino pugs will head back to Muak Lek training camp to resume their preparation for next month's 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam and 2022 AIBA Women's World Championship in Istanbul, Turkey. (Photo courtesy of ABAP secretary-general Marcus Manalo) MANILA - The Philippine national boxing team seeks to fine-tune its game as it goes into the final stage of its rigorous preparations for the 31st Southeast Asian Games as well as the 2022 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships next month. This after a victorious campaign in the recently-concluded 2022 Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament held at the luxurious Angsana Laguna Phuket Resort Hotel where 14 Filipino pugilists joined, with five of them clinching podium finishes. Rogen Ladon (men's flyweight), Riza Pasuit (women's light) and Hergie Bacyadan (women's middle) snared gold medals while Ian Clark Bautista (men's feather) and Aira Villegas (women's fly) seized silvers, resulting in the country's best finish in the prestigious tournament organized by the Thailand Boxing Association headed by its president and concurrent Asian Boxing Confederation chief Pichai Chunhavajira. Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) secretary-general Marcus Manalo said the Thailand Open tested the Pinoy boxers' current mettle and that gave them a clearer view of what to work on after a two-week pre-competition training camp in Muak Lek, just outside Bangkok. "There's some catching up to do particularly on the conditioning side. What happened here in this Thailand Open is really a feedback for us. Whether we won or we came up short, it's feedback," Manalo, who led the Philippine delegation along with ABAP president Ed Picson and veteran boxing official Karina Picson, said in a news release on Sunday. "'Yung mga early losses natin it's an indication lang na (Our early losses are just indication that) some of the boxers are not yet there in terms of their peak performance, which is fine. The reason why we joined here is to know where we are right now," added Manalo, a mental performance coach and a graduate of sport and exercise psychology from Texas Tech University. The morning after the Thailand Open, the national pugs immediately went back to Muak Lek where they would resume their training for four to five weeks before flying straight to the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi for the SEA Games scheduled on May 12 to 23. Meanwhile, Villegas flew back to the Philippines along with coach Reynaldo Galido to arrange visa requirements for the Women's World Championships on May 6 to 21 in Istanbul, Turkey. Head coach Don Abnett said the athletes' base fitness is fine and they will make the most out of their limited time to bring them back to tip-top shape. "They've done general training before they got here so the base fitness is okay. Next week we're gonna get into the boxing specifics. We'll see what happens in the next few weeks," said the Australian tactician, who is getting a lot of help from coaches Roel Velasco, Ronald Chavez, Mitchel Martinez and Galido. "Would've liked to have it (training camp) four or five weeks longer. But we'll do what we can with the time that we have," he added. Manalo lauded the Thailand Boxing Association for hosting the training camp as well as the Thailand Open that drew 14 boxing federations across Asia, Europe and Oceania, including the Philippines' Southeast Asian rivals in Vietnam, Indonesia and Singapore, besides host nation Thailand. "Good thing our friends from the Thailand Boxing Association offered this opportunity to train in Muak Lek. That really provides us with the best challenge that can push our boxers to be at their best pagdating ng (in the upcoming) SEA Games and also the Women's World Championships," Manalo said. (PR) }
