LA Opera requires COVID-19 vaccination or test for indoor show

Los Angeles Opera is returning to the great indoors much sooner than expected: The company is scheduled to announce Monday that it will stage a free performance of “Oedipus Rex” inside Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on June 6.
That covers the who, what and when, but arts groups plotting their future with the pandemic not yet ended may be most interested in hearing the how: To attend the Chandler show, patrons must present proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or negative COVID-19 test results.
The Igor Stravinsky opera will mark the company’s first in-person performance inside the Chandler since the March 8, 2020, staging of “Roberto Devereux.” The final performance of that production on March 14 was canceled when major venues first declared temporary closures in the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

A brief history of the arts legends who got their start at Sumner High School

A brief history of the arts legends who got their start at Sumner High School
Local leaders are scheduled to meet again in March to discuss closing the first African-American high school west of the Mississippi River.
Sumner High School, ca. 1908
The latest round of proposed closures for Saint Louis Public Schools has targeted one of the most historic high schools in America: Sumner High School, the first African-American high school west of the Mississippi River. I’ve written about Sumner High School in the equally historic Ville neighborhood in the past, but I feel like it’s worth revisiting the hallowed halls of this “palace of education,” as I called it before. The closure of Sumner would leave the Ville neighborhood with no public schools, as far as I can tell. (The St. Louis School Board will meet again in March to decide whether to close the school.) And the 122-year-old building is not just another “aging” or “obsolete” structure. As a letter written by local arts leaders recently revealed, Sumner has been an influential force for African Americans in the arts.

Lent came quickly this year. With no buildup to Carnival and Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday, because of you know what, Ash Wednesday suddenly appeared. I thought we’d explore a few musical carnivals since the season didn’t exist this year.

Carnival festivities can start anytime after the Christian celebration of Epiphany. Epiphany is on January 6. Most Carnival celebrations happen in February and March depending on when Lent starts. Lent is the 40 days before Easter and is symbolic of Jesus’ 40 days and nights in the wilderness before he started his ministry.
