Why The Economic Situation In 1920 Was Grim

Why The Economic Situation In 1920 Was Grim

“The economic situation in 1920 was grim. By that year unemployment had jumped from 4 percent to nearly 12 percent, and GNP declined 17 percent.”[1] Federal income tax rates were massively and oppressively increased from a maximum rate of 15 percent in 1916 to 77 percent in 1918. This plummeted the percent of overall tax revenue paid by the wealthy from 29.4 percent in 1916 to only 2.37 percent by 1921.[2] As a result, the higher rates “shifted a growing share of the burden onto the lower income bracket taxpayers.”[3]
This occurred under Woodrow Wilson’s administration, and although he enacted the Federal Reserve[4] “to furnish an elastic currency, to afford means of rediscounting commercial paper, to establish a more effective supervision of banking in the United States, and for other purposes,”[5] it has never accomplished its intent.

A Right-Wing Think Tank Is Behind the Controversial Great Barrington Declaration Calling for COVID-19 Herd Immunity

A Right-Wing Think Tank Is Behind the Controversial Great Barrington Declaration Calling for COVID-19 Herd Immunity
An open letter that emerged earlier this month opposing COVID-19 shutdowns and calling for a “herd immunity” approach to addressing the coronavirus — which already has claimed over 220,000 American lives — is one of the latest examples of how right-wing ideology and think tanks that have long cultivated climate science denial are now engaging in COVID disinformation and promoting messaging dangerous to public health.
Known as the Great Barrington Declaration, this statement advocating for herd immunity was introduced in early October at an event hosted by the American Institute for Economic Research, a conservative free-market think tank located in the western Massachusetts town of Great Barrington. This think tank, funded in part through a corporate investment firm with holdings in major oil and petrochemical companies, operates a network for the international business community that partners with other institutions backed by Koch and fossil fuel cash.

Who Is Karl Marx? What Is Marxism and its Consequences?

Who Is Karl Marx? What Is Marxism and its Consequences?
Marx was a vicious racist and anti-Semite. His demonic apocalyptic vision of destruction led to the deaths of over 100 million victims by their murderous Marxist regimes.
Reviewed by Dr. Gary North: “This is an irrefutable book. Not many books in history are. I have a Ph.D. in history. I wrote a book on Marx’s thought, which was published in 1968. I went through more primary source documents by Marx and Engels than most professional historians ever do. This book is a compilation of direct citations from primary source documents. Weyl assembled the citations in one book, for which historians should be grateful. The one-star ratings are offered by readers who cannot bear the thought that their beloved Marx wrote what he very clearly did write. If you have any doubts, buy this book and read it.Then follow the footnotes. This book was dropped down the academic memory hole from the day it was published. Marxism was still a faith shared by academics in the West. Deng abandoned the faith in the year this book was published: 1979. In December 1991, the experiment in Marxism was abandoned by the USSR. This left the aging holdouts in the West high and dry. The few Western Marxists who had read Weyl’s book never forgave him for writing it. Weyl was one of theirs who abandoned the faith early. This always outrages the faithful in any religion, which Marxism was — a religion of revolution.”

EconomicPolicyJournal.com: What Developing Countries Desperately Need To Do To Reinvigorate Their Economies Post-COVID Lockdowns

Thursday, March 4, 2021
By Richard M. Ebeling
The coronavirus and the government responses with shutdowns and lockdowns, along with restrictions on international travel and disruptions of the global supply chains that crisscross countries and continents, have made a fuller and more rapid recovery difficult in the Western industrialized countries, but even more so in many places in what used to be called during the Cold War, the underdeveloped nations of the “Third World.” The question is what may be the best domestic and trade policies for these countries to follow in such trying times?
To where and to whom might we turn for some advice for these developing countries in the aftermath of the economic disaster caused by governments due to their responses to the coronavirus? I would like to suggest that one place to start might be with the policy recommendations offered by the Austrian economist, Ludwig von Mises (1881-1973), about 80 years ago, when he was asked to present an agenda for economic reform and growth for Mexico after he completed an extensive stay in and study of that country’s situation and possibilities.

Progressivism's Destructive and Evil Motivations

This incisive article, Minimum Wages Had a Eugenic Intent, discusses the true intent of minimum wage laws from the most noted and prominent economists of the Progressive Era. (Open and view this slide-show on Excluding Inferior Workers: Eugenic Influences on Economic Reform in The Progressive Era, in a new window) Like their modern day descendants in the academy, media and institutional welfare state bureaucracy they were obsessed with racial, gender, and other categories of identity politics (but not in the way that today’s totalitarian progressives would understand.) Progressivism has always been destructive and evil.
In 1883, the English statistician and social scientist Francis Galton coined the word “eugenics” (“well-born,” from Greek). The term referred to his idea of selectively breeding people to enhance “desirable” and eliminate “undesirable” properties. Seen as following Darwin’s theory of evolution, in the 1920s and ’30s eugenics gained important backing in England and the United States. Scientists and physicians spoke and wrote in its support. It influenced U.S. immigration policy, and states like Virginia used it to justify the forcible sterilization of the intellectually disabled.
