[ ] [ ] jesse: fox news alert, guilty, guilty, guilty. was the verdict handed down by a jury of hunter biden s peers. for the first time in his life, hunter faced the music. two counts of lying on a gun form, one count of possession of a firearm by a drug user. hunter biden appeared wide-eyed and motionless as he became the first child of a sitting president to be convicted of a crime. three felonies, hunter facing a maximum of 25 years in prison. sentencing guidelines suggest just a couple although the judge could deviate and do whatever she wants. sentencing will probably occur before september 5th when hunter goes on trial in la for tax evasion. that means hunter could be sentenced to prison just days before the second presidential debate. he will obviously appeal. here s a special council after today s verdict. hunter biden was convicted of two counts of lying on a form submitted to a federal firearms dealer about his addiction or use of crack cocaine. and possessing a firearm while a user or addict. no one in this country is above the law. everyone must be accountable for their actions back even this defendant. however hunter biden should be no more accountable than any other citizen convicted of this same conduct. jesse: that s the same biden prosecutor who tried to hand hunter probation and lifetime immunity for the guns and tax felonies. we were wondering where this newfound concept of accountability came from. here s what one juror had to say after the verdict. watch. biden was on trial, just like anybody else. no one is above the law, no matter who you are. politics played no part in this whatsoever. jesse: the jury followed the law, the judge ran a tight trial and justice was served. but just because one democrat was convicted doesn t mean the american legal system isn t being abused. the feds are throwing dozens of republicans in prison on trumped up charges and trying to incarcerate the republican nominee for a crime they cooked up with black magic to hocus-pocus and election. hunters judge did not donate to a group called stop democrats either. the media celebrated the trump verdict like a july 4th barbecue but treated hunters like a funeral. this trial inside the courtroom, like virtually every criminal trial, was a personal tragedy, a family tragedy. every presidential family is part of the american family, that s the way it works. this is a tragedy for the biden family. that family drama played out in a courtroom in ways we have never seen before. it does not make it any less painful for the nation or for the family. but the verdict is now real and the consequences will apply. this public life of this family which began a half-century ago after all with the car accident that killed his late wife and his daughter, injured his two sons, you ve now fast forward to today and this really dramatic and ultimately painful process continues. jesse: hunters everything the media claims to despise, a white privileged sexist spoiled brat who barks don t you know who my daddy is? but he s a democrat so the media circles the wagons. the media has more sympathy for a crack addict to dumped a gun by a school than for a president who just wants to make america great again. moments ago, hunter and joe were seen hugging on the tarmac in delaware where they will be spending the night together. i m sure this father s day weekend will be a little awkward biden wished he could have been there sooner but in an act of poetic injustice, he had to attend a gun-control event just hours before the verdict. there s never been a time that says you can own anything you want. you could not own a cannon during the civil war. think about it, how much to here this praise, the blood of liberty give me a break. if they want to think they can take on government if we get out of line which they are talking again about, they need f-15s, they don t need a rifle. [ crowd noise ] no, no, no, no, no. jesse: biden s son was so high he s lucky no one died but he wants to restrict the cyclamen meant for sober law-abiding americans. our government had f-15s in afghanistan and attala bench one with rifles by the way. we are not looking to overthrow joe just to throw him out. after a jury found hunter guilty of gun felonies, joe biden said he is proud of him. jill and i love our son and we are so proud of them and he is today. there s no contrition at all by the biden family. hunter did not show any remorse, he was smiling afterwards. his father is not ashamed, would not even gently condemn his son s actions. hunter has committed more crimes than we can count and all biden says is he s proud. the reason hunter has broken the law for 30 years and not pay the piper is because of his dad. if every time i screwed up and my dad s response was i m proud, son, i love you, i would keep screwing up. bailing somebody out over and over again does not mean you love them. hunter was kicked out of the navy for cocaine on an administrative discharge instead of a dishonorable one because his dad greased the brass. hunter got caught with cocaine at the jersey shore way back in the eighties and the senator s son had his record expunged. when he left his crack pipe in a rental car, police investigated and dropped the charges. when he put 20 grand on his dad s amex for russian escorts, the secret service cleaned it up. when he lost his laptop, the fbi and cia covered it up. when he owed millions in back taxes, s sugar brother foot the bill. when he needed money for alimony and child support, daddy s donors bought his dopey art. his dad s own justice department tried to make the gun and tax case go away a year ago today. what makes you think daddy won t save him again? will you accept the jury s outcome, there verdict, no matter what it is? yes. have you ruled out a pardon for your son? yes. jesse: biden never used the word commute. commuting a sentence means you just spring him out of prison. the charge is still on the record. biden is going to have to save his son to save his own hide. remember that taxes and the gun, only a fraction of the crimes hunter and joe biden would be guilty of, it prosecutors were allowed to follow the facts, was there blowers have testified that investigators were blocked at every turn from following leads that lead to joe. the cia and fbi and the treasury department s are all in on the cover up. a strong case could be made for trump prosecutors to investigate money laundering, racketeering bribery, foreign lobbying conspiracies. donald trump calls the gun case a distraction. the trial has been nothing more than a distraction from the real crimes of the biden crime family which is raked in tens of millions of dollars from china, russia and ukraine. rocha joe biden s rain over the biden family criminal empire is all coming to an end on november 5th and never again will a biden cell government access for personal pride it profit. hunter biden may have faced verdict today but the verdict on joe biden will come november 5th. cohost of the 5 judge jeanine pirro is here and she s matching me. judge, will this judge sentenced hunter biden to prison? well there are those who think that the sentencing guidelines which are no longer mandatory can call for between 15 and 21 months and of course if the judge wants to do a downward departure, she can do so but she has to give a reason to do so. i don t know that she would be inclined to do so given a couple of things. hunter biden could have pled guilty, admitted, took responsibility and admitted remorse. this judge also is the judge who first saw through the fact that the hunter biden team and the department of justice was trying to pull the wool over her eyes and create this immunity in perpetuity so hunter biden would never be prosecuted for a crime for the rest of his life. jesse: i want one of those deals. who doesn t? in addition to that, the nullification argument. i mean the defense that went on in this courtroom just divide any kind of reason and it was really an insult to the jury that s all right through it. i mean you ve got the defendant whose boys is bellowing in the courtroom basically saying i was addicted to drugs. you ve got all kinds of evidence, a laptop that the biden a ministration and everyone in so-called intelligence said was fake so this judge may say enough of pulling the wool over everyone s eyes, maybe i will give him some jail time. jesse: if the sentence comes down right before the fifth where he goes on trial for taxes in la, does hunter immediately appeal, when does he serve a sentence or would dad come in and commute? i don t think his dad is going to do anything before the election because he does not have to. if there is a sentence that is imposed that calls for some jail time, even a small amount, the defendant has the right to request a pallet bail. it will probably be granted so he will not have to serve any jail time. and of course joe biden can wait until the end of his term or he can commute his sentence. who knows, joe has changed his mind, we don t even know if he understood the question. but it s interesting. i want to say one thing, that whole biden family stood there and sat there in the front row with this united front, you know, we love hunter, and every one of them has been negatively impacted by hunter biden being a crack addict and getting a gun. but in addition to that, everyone part of that united front was getting money from what you call the crime family, from all over the world everyone got some money from an llc. so that family is not what they appear to be i think that the jury s all right through it. it s in no way a nullification. this is a very easy case. the quickness within which they brought back the verdict tells me that they weren t pulling any punches. jesse: why do you think the president of the united states at a time like this when his son has been convicted of a serious gun charge that could have piled up having a kid snatch it from the trashcan and may be shoot himself are his sister in the head, why doesn t he say anything contrite? like my son made a mistake or i m sorry that we are putting the country through this, just a gently worded phrase to show the american people that the family takes some responsibility and has some remorse? because hunter biden was considered the prince in delaware. everyone called him the prince. he s never been held accountable for anything he s done. he s 54 years old. in addition to that, they have to admit the hypocrisy because within hours of the sentence, joe biden was saying we have to have stronger gun laws, we have to make sure these guns are secure and kept in safe places. i mean come on tell that to your son. jesse: judge jeanine, we will see you on the 5 tomorrow. no more trials for a while, we are out of trials, what are we going to talk about? see you tomorrow. congressman james comer joins me now. congressmen, you ve sent referrals to the attorney general on perjury because he lied to you guys in a sworn deposition. so he s got a lot hanging over his head here. how do you think that s going to shake out in light of this conviction? well it s more problems for hunter biden. look, what hunter biden did in the deposition is he clearly lied and why did he lie? he lied to protect joe biden. but the fact that he lied under oath is clearly perjury. this will be used to determine his sentencing. so not only do you have the gun trial where he clearly lied on a gun application, the jury s all right through that, now he s got his tax evasion charges where we know he did not pay his taxes, we know to this day he hasn t paid his taxes, his taxes were paid years later by major democrat donor prior to the presidential election to help alleviate a problem joe biden had in the presidential election against trump. so what we ve done with the criminal referrals as you know is the first step. it s just the beginning, but it s a major problem for hunter biden and it s going to be taken into account when it comes time for his sentencing. jesse: how do you feel as an investigator who cracked this case wide open with a laptop, followed every lead as far as you could, ran into some roadblocks, and there are only focusing on a narrow, still in quincy and a gun charge, which they had to prosecute because he had pictures of it all over the internet? how does that make you feel. justice will not be served until the department of justice takes into account all of the financial crimes that the entire biden family committed. it wasn t just hunter biden, it was also joe biden and jim biden, the entire family benefited from the biden influence peddling schemes. we had three people testify who were once partners with hunter biden in these schemes. they testified under oath that the biden s were selling the biden brand, they were selling access to joe biden. there was never a legitimate business. we know from whistleblowers they never paid taxes on the tens of millions of dollars that they took from adversaries around the world. we have laws in congress where i am right now that prevent people from doing this. it s called the foreign registration act, foreign corrupt practices act. we know the biden s have violated these laws so until the department of justice takes the real serious crimes into account, justice has not been served. if i listed the top ten crimes that the president s son committed, lying on a gun application would not even make the cut. jesse: so true. is hunter biden taking the fall to save his dad? it sure looks like that. he looks like someone that s got a pardon in his back pocket. people asked today, will the president pardon hunter biden. while the department of justice is not finished with him. they have this tax evasion trial, then they ve got these criminal referrals, and as i ve said many times over the past week, we are not finished. the criminal referrals will just the beginning of the accountability face. we ve gone through great lengths and we ve been very transparent with the american people about the money this family has taken in, we ve been very transparent about the 20 shell companies, the llcs the biden s had that appear to serve no purpose other than to launder money, and when i say launder i m using a word that six different banks used in those suspicious activity reports. they laundered money to ten different biden family members and according to the irs whistleblowers, they never paid taxes. jesse: and you are still looking at new bank records you ve got your hands on. yes. we find new accounts every day. jesse: all right, thank you james comer, he was posted. let s bring in former white house press secretary kayleigh mcenany. how do you think president biden is feeling today? i imagine it s pretty rough because there has been reporting for a year plus saying that every single day he has been following hunter biden and the legal matter, so much so that aids will bring it up to him and he will kind of erupt. so aids kind of tiptoe around him, they don t want to bring it out, even though it is a live political story, one that we talk about often, and the white house press briefing, there was supposed to be one today, there wasn t one. i imagine they did not want to field questions on this. i imagine as a father this is a tough moment. he doesn t even want to talk about the politics of it but he will have to at some point. jesse: but the verdict does contain the potential thrust into his own personal and financial affairs. and so do the tax charges. they have been walled off from anything against joe biden. so at the same time, as distraught as he is about his son, his addiction and conviction, he must feel politically insulated from any future exposure. i think he does. i would be stunned if hunter biden did not take a plea deal ahead of the tax charges. that is where you start getting subpoena power. that is where you start getting subpoena power over all of these bank accounts that james comer is talking about. he subpoenaed them on the congressional level but they start to come into a live court case. there is simply no way they allow that to go to trial when they know they ve got, to your point if you don t want to pardon hunter, you have a commutation in your back pocket, you will either pay a lame duck president or second term president, more likely the first. he s going to pardon his son. s son is going to take a plea deal. i would be stunned if he allowed that. jesse: and he would take a plea deal to serve any time? remember he rejected serving time in the first plea deal that blew up. yeah, look, i think he learned a lesson. he overplayed his hand today. the facts are supposed to match the law in order to get a conviction. this was a slamdunk case. the facts match the law. he lied on a gun form. tax evasion. either you paid your taxes or you didn t and in his case he did not. this is a slamdunk. if he would have taken a plea deal today it would have been much better for him when it came to sentencing, would have gotten a much lighter sentence, so why would you not do that with the tax evasion? very conservative organization on abortion rights. and the bottom line seemed to be to keep from the left for showing up at all. but what he had to say wasn t good enough for the right yeah. i think this really just represents how difficult of an issue abortion is for republicans, it s essentially a lose-lose situation, and we ve seen how donald trump has struggled to grapple with that fact and figure out how to speak on it. so he faced he faced backlash from the left because of course, this is an extremely concerning derivative group that wants to ban all abortions and so their argument was, why is he showing up at all? and then he faced backlash from conservatives who argued that he sounded like a politician and his brief pre-recorded remarks, he didn t mention the word abortion at all. he didn t take pride for overturning roe as he so often does but it encapsulates how the abortion issue is really, really hurting republicans and how they ve just struggled to figure out the happy medium and how to talk about this issue. because again, i mean, this is the difference between a pre and post row america in a world where roe v wade stands, republican politicians can and would go into these groups, talked to them and say definitively, life begins at conception. this, we shouldn t be doing this, et cetera. without any actual risks that those policies are going to become the law of the land? no. yes. and i think the other thing is we ve seen how donald trump donald trump in 2016 won a lot of support from the anti-abortion movement because he promised all of these things he delivered on them. and this time around, i talked to activists in this group all the time about this issue. and throughout this entire election, they ve been really concerned that donald trump has left them by the wayside. and so to me this, these pre-recorded remarks is trump s sort of attempt at saying, i m still with you. i m still here but also trying to walk that really fine, almost impossible line to get those moderate voters over to his side as well. yeah let s talk a little bit about president biden because we are starting to see, or at least it seems like we re seeing a very small shift potentially in the polling in biden s direction. we don t want to overstate it because this race is so incredibly close, right? and we re still kind of gathering data in a post conviction world but i do feel like there are some i m picking up some more positive vibes from democrats shall we say, in the wake of this, i think they were a little reluctant to weigh in initially, what is your reporting on how this seems to be playing out so far? well, it s interesting because we still don t know exactly how the trump conviction is going to affect voters long-term. it does is you said seem to have maybe shifted things a little bit four at least the short term, who knows, in five months what s going to happen but what i think is notable as every time i talked to the biden campaign, they ve been really focused on saying throughout this entire election that they re going to focus on touting his accomplishments, focus on trying to remind voters in a very tough election cycle what he has done. and so this this gun speech is going to be one of those prime examples. it s an issue that a lot of voters care about, particularly his core base and we re going to see a lot from him about this issue and we ve already seen how there also at the same time contrasting what joe biden has accomplished in office with donald trump s policies. and so this gun speech, represents how the biden campaign is trying to run their campaigns. one other message that the biden campaign has been trying to really push. and if you know anyone that works for biden comes to the set, they will say they will make this argument that donald trump is out for himself, that he doesn t care about voters, which is why it stood out to us on the show when donalds, this is from over the weekend, donald gaza. it s a lot the us is saying, hey, we re waiting on hamas. what, where does this stand at this point? well it s not entirely clear is that we re hearing a lot about in hamas is core. other people are saying it s in israel s court as well, hearing their from the us ambassador to the united nations saying israel has agreed to it, but has agreed to it in its current form the government that is currently in. so you have now benny gantz has left the israeli war cabinet and it s now become more right-wing. so will they agree to this deal within this broader deal, as i understand it, is the idea of a palestinian state in future. and that is something that the right wing of the israeli government won t agree to. so i think clarity is needed on whether the us ambassador to the un is right. is that israel, the current israeli government, whether or not it actually supports this deal, then of course yes, the question about whether or not hamas some supports the deal as well, and whether or not even if they get to the point of negotiation, whether it holds but i think that that clarity on both sides is needed. but as you say, we don t often hear from that palestinian ambassador in the us max. we re, we re also getting some reporting in the wall street journal about yahya sinwar is the head of hamas his correspondence with his compatriots, but also with mediators who are going back and forth trying to get this deal. and the way that he frames this, he says, quote, we have the israelis, right where we want them and then he goes on to say in another message that he cited civilian losses in national liberation conflicts in places like algeria, where hundreds of thousands of people died fighting for independence from france. and he said, quote these are necessary sacrifices. and quote, so we ve kinda east talking about these people who are dying in gaza as a way to pressure the israelis. it s a pretty stark and difficult way of looking at things and this is something that when people who are supportive of the israeli is trying to recover their hostages, et cetera. they point to this and they say, look, hamas uses its people this way well, i think a lot of the quotes open to interpretation on such a divisive issue. and i know the article makes the point, but his ultimate goal is to appear to win a permanent ceasefire that allows hamas to declare victory by outlasting israel. so i think there s a real awareness within israel in many parts of israel that, that might be the strategy here on the her mass sayyed, there will be people saying that this is a have you with us. donald trump has completed his pre-sentencing interview. cnn reporting the former president answered all the questions he was polite, respectful and accommodating to the probation officers telling them to be safe with the conclusion of the session. this routine interview lasted just 30 minutes. may source tells cnn there could be a follow-up meeting. here s a former new york city, the former new york city corrections commissioner, who it s just explaining a little bit here. this could be an is usually a drawn-out process it s just the beginning of what can be a pretty long and sometimes intrusive process. so you shouldn t take too much that it was just a first polite interview that a probation officer has wide berth here so this was the start of something that certainly not the end not the end, joining me now, cnn legal analyst, joey jackson. joey. good morning to you. it sounds like we got a slightly different version of donald trump than we often see on the campaign trail when he talks talk to his probation officer. i m still working on getting over the fact that this is the reality that we re living in, that this is what we re covering day in and day out considering he is the republican presumptive republican nominee for president. but what do you take away from what unfolded here? jc, good morning to you. it is a very pleasant surprise and quite unusual from what we re used to in terms of rashness, in terms of making statements about the system and being a victim in an injustice. and so yes, it isn t surprised. but remember we re big picture what this is about, right? there s something called a psi. what is a psi pre-sentence investigation and pursuant to that investigation, a defendant, as we look at here, now, a convicted felon is provided with the opportunity to give information with respect to things that are relevant about you. like what like your family background, like your mental health history and status, like the nature of the conviction and how it affected your ability to support and otherwise provide for your family? generally not getting into the facts and circumstances the case itself, which is why counsel generally doesn t even appear or need to for that matter. and the whole reason for that case, he of course, is that then you go from a psi pre-sentence invented that s the patient to a psr, right? lot of acronyms, pre-sentence report and that report is certainly helpful for a judge to provide sentencing to the defendant, having learned more about them, and then of course this comes with and along alongside what your attorneys will give, which is their recommended condition with respect to the sentence. and then prosecutors will weigh in and then the judge will certainly look at all of it and render a fair and just determination as to what sentencing should look like joey is plausible here. mean like i completely understand why this process exists for your average defendant who is not known to any of these officials in this system, right? i mean, how ever many cases come before them day in and day out. this is typically pretty routine thing. this is not a routine situation like if you re the judge here how much does this actual process do you think? do you think judge machinery knows what he s gonna do three parts to the question. i think number one, in terms of the nature and typical illness of this for mr. trump, it s not right. we know i think people in general about him. he s run for president before he served as president for he ran again for president. and he s running again. and so i think generally the typical defendant to your point, is not someone who s known to the judge and the judge is trying to get a broader perspective with regard to who you are, what you do. number two, in terms of the process itself, it s helpful and important for a judge in general because it does give a deep dive into who the particular person is, what their families about, what their mental health history, about who they are about what their thoughts in nature of the system are about to give you a better rendering of a decision number three, in terms of the judge, i don t think so. okay. see, i don t think judge machine has made up his mind you know, and i know that by nothing in terms of having spoken to him or knowing anything about it. but i think that the process provides for the nature of what happens and what does happen. what happens is, is you re attorneys provide their view defense attorneys with respect to what they fair. and justin appropriate prosecutors way in the department of probation can ways in because they will give casey they the department probation the essence of why he gave this interview a recommendation and i think the judge takes all that into account and let s not forget when you re attorney he s provide their memorandum. it s accompanied by all kinds of letters and documents and things about who you are, what you re about, the redeeming qualities you have and all the factors that talk about the aspirational nature of the actual in most instances, the aberration on nature. it s not typically who the defendant is, judge, this is something that was a one-off, your honor. whatever arguments you make, but there are multiple letters that come with that. and then of course, at the sentencing itself, casey very briefly, the attorneys are afforded an opportunity to make oral argument with regard to what they think it should be added. the defendant, him or herself, in this case, the former president has an opportunity to render some kind of public statement about how they feel. and then oftentimes you get victim impact statements two and so i think because of all that it would really be a disappointment and i m sure that s not what judgment shot is doing to say i ve got my mind made up, i m just going to render a decision. i don t need any of this. all of it is important i mean, sometimes come game de the sentencing day judges do change their mind right then and there. so see what happens here. very interesting, very briefly, joey, let me ask you about the other case that s unfolding. and that s a hunter biden the jury has this case. how long do you expect it to take for them to reach a verdict on something like this so you know, casey, that s always the wildcard in terms of the timeframe and i don t think we could draw anything into the time frame, of course, deliberation, just having begun yesterday, of course, this dealing with three different counts, did he lie to a federally licensed firearm dealer that he lie on the form with regard to the purchase of the weapon or did he illegally possess it? so those are the issues i think they re very clearly defined. what s a bit murky is whether or not there s really, was he addicted at the time, whether he thought he was addicted at the time, was he deceiving himself? what this evidence of that regard and let s not forget, he s got home-court vantage has families pretty popular in delaware? it matters. i think you have an african-american jury that is pretty intuned to what s appropriate, what s in just et cetera and so let s see whether or not we get a hung jury for finally, jury nullification, whether the jury says, you know what, perhaps it s something you did i think there s shaming addiction. we re not going to do that and then let s throw it out. courts has been arguing that, but the prosecution saying it s about line let s see what narrative the jury comes up with. well, know, to retaliate against republicans who voted to oust him last year. this has really been an ongoing thing, but it s starting with republican congresswoman nancy mace of south carolina, cobo, an nbc operatives aligned with mccarthy are directing big money into these races through outside groups. tuesday s challenge to mace is the first test, and then we ll see house freedom caucus chair bob good, mccarthy. he s made angry. what s going on with that, right? so donald trump hasn t endorsed his his primary opponent, for example, which was quite stunning to learn, especially given that bob good is, as you said, the chair of the freedom caucus, and he s got a lot of conservatives both movement conservatives and conserve as on capitol hill, who are very much behind him and trying to make sure that he wins his race. he was one of the aid, of course, who voted to oust kevin carvey. so there s that dynamic there as well. i will tell you a lot of freedom caucus members are a little bit upset with donald trump and his political operation at the level at which he s, he s gone in terms of the intensity of trying to endorse me it s primaries. they think it s not productive, not helpful or not helpful to the conservative cause. in particular to be endorsing against these members particularly when you have bob good, who someone when who is the chairman of the freedom caucus, the freedom caucus have ten years ago is not the freedom caucus of today. it s basically a devotion to donald trump, right and bob good is especially so circumstance because he endorsed ron desantis early on in the presidential campaign. so there might be some bad blood there between him and donald trump, and that might have led to the endorsement of his primary opponent. but it s definitely an interesting dynamic to watch it multiple revenge tour is kind of taking their way through his district exactly how i would say it. so this is something that we ve been found how in closely on the show, different, pressure on hamas joining me now to discuss as cnn national security analyst shawn turner, shawn, good morning to you let s just dig in a little bit at to what blinken is doing here. the way that american officials are framing this in public is that they are waiting on hamas, that israel is on board with this american plan, but there does seem to be some murkiness around it. how do you see this playing out? especially in the wake of this very high-profile hostage rescue that also of course led to the deaths of scores of palestinians good morning, case you it s good to be with you when you he listened to israel s response to the biden ceasefire plan. i think that would most people are hearing is you re hearing comments like israel accepts the plan, urine comments like israel believes that this is a good first step, but we re not hearing a full-throated endorsement of the plan and i think that while that a lot of people are cautiously optimistic that this is the plan that will achieve a ceasefire. there s still a lot of unknowns here. look, i think that what i see here is a fact that israel this feeling, increasing pressure from the international community. it goes without saying that this is no longer a localized or regional issue for israel, that the pressure is intense and they re being criticized by all sectors of the globe so i think that what we re going to see here is we re going to, we re going to see the support of this plan continued to strengthen or going to see israel wait this out, and we re going to see hamas as we always see with hamas, try to leverage this plants to get as much as they possibly can. i think this is the best possible option that we ve had in a long time. so i m cautiously optimistic that this is going to work out shawn there s some reporting in the wall street journal about messages from mr. sinwar, who is the head of hamas, who has been messaging with hamas officials that the qatari and egyptian emissaries, and it s reported that he said, we ve the israeli he s right where we want them. and then he also compared what s going on with palestinian civilians to national liberation conflicts in say algeria end. he said, quote, these are necessary sacrifices and quote, how do you think that illuminates the thinking of hamas at this point? you, at this point 0.1 of the big concerns that we ve all had is the fact that hamas continues to use civilians to achieve their objectives. i mean, when we look at the number of palestinians who have been killed, it s, it s astronomical i think that what this does a message like that i think it s obviously not constructive, casey, because there is a deal that s on the table. and what hamas needs do if you read the language of a deal, it s very clear in terms of what hamas needs to do. there s no wiggle room for hamas. and so a message like that suggests that there is wiggle room at that there s some negotiation that can or should happen with israel, and that s simply not the case. this is a deal that lays out what hamas should do. and i think that the challenge punch that we see with hamas is that even though we see a message like that, hamas is not always in control you have a number of different groups and factions that be maybe making decisions that are not necessarily in line with with what the negotiators want to do so it s not helpful. but again, i think that that s the kind of rhetoric we oftentimes i m see. this is a good deal and there s a real opportunity here to really some of the pressure and two, and the humanitarian crisis in new details this morning about the israeli military operation that rescued four israeli civilians held by hamas this new video edited and provided by the israeli military appears to show some israeli soldiers escorting the rescued hostages toward military helicopters on a beach in gaza. these for israelis now reunited with their families and just beginning to recover from their months of captivity. among those rescued 26-year-old noa argamani, who is abduction during the october 7 attack was captured on tape. noa screamed for help as she was forced by hamas members onto the back of a motorcycle. and driven into gaza. the idf raid also resulting in the deadliest day of the war in six months. at least 274 people killed according to gazan health officials the idf disputes those numbers, saying that the number of casualties was under 100 cnn cannot independently verify the death toll and we don t yet know how many of those killed were hamas fighters and how many were civilians. but we do know that the hostages were being held in residential homes in a densely populated area cnn also learning this morning that some idf soldiers disguise themselves as hamas fighters and displaced palestinians to conduct the raid. joining me now to discuss, is cnn political and national security analyst david sanger. david, good morning. i m very grateful to have you here for folks just tuning in after the weekend. a very dramatic time for the israelis here at with this raid. how do you see the fallout here as we see these hostages reunited with their families, but we also try to figure out to count the dead among the palestinians good morning, casey. and i think you ve captured it right? it was an incredibly dramatic weekend. and i think there are three salient points about the rescue. the first is the operation itself was a miracle of terrific intelligence, great covert work, and getting in there and getting them out. then certainly something to be celebrated. there are more than 100 hostages left, but this was clearly a big win on saturday morning when when this all took place. the second is at once again, it came at a great human cost as many israeli operations in gaza have and this is the sort of brutal calculus of this, which is maybe it was under 100 pounds justinian s dead. maybe it was over 200 is a palestinian say, but the fact of the matter is that we saw a huge number of palestinian deaths in order to accomplish the long-sought release of these four and that seems to sum up much of what s happened during the war. i think the third thing we re discovering as monday morning rolls in here, is that after this dramatic weekend, the rescue did very little to change the fundamentals of the problem that is real faces benny gantz, the former defense minister and, and head of idf took a day off or pushed an extra day because of the rescue but resigned from the war cabinet shattering that view of unity and he did so saying that prime minister netanyahu who does not have a plan for the day after four administering gaza yeah, david, in fact, let me pause you there because i did want to get to that next with you and we have a little bit from gantz over the weekend and what he said, how he explained why he was leaving the war cabinet. let s watch sorry. can you regrettably netanyahu is preventing us from advancing toward true victory, which is the justification for the ongoing and painful cost of war that is why we are leaving the emergency government today with a heavy heart, but with full confidence i call on netanyahu, set an agreed election date. don t allow our people to get torn apart so david, he said there that netanyahu is preventing us from advancing towards true victory what does he really getting at here? because he also seem to suggest that netanyahu was unnecessarily prolonging the war right? this has been a long-held view, including among american officials that prime minister netanyahu knows that once the war is over, or at least a ceasefire takes place at the active fighting is done the investigations into october 7 begin in earnest. the intelligence failures israel obviously had a good deal of intelligence. this would happen that it did not respond to the idf s failures. that israeli defense force in responding that day. he assumption is that prime minister netanyahu couldn t not survive that and of course, one of the beneficiaries could well be benny gantz himself, who ran against the prime minister a few years ago, laws. but today is doing well enough in the polls, but it s not inconceivable that he could emerge victorious. also, not certain but what we re seeing now is the united states with benny gantz s help, tried to get the israelis to commit to what president biden called and israeli proposal for ceasefire and prisoner exchange and get hamas most importantly to agree to it may be difficult, more difficult it was difficult before the rescue. it may be more difficult now. and overnight, casey, the us has finally decided to go to the united nations security council with a ceasefire and hostage exchange proposal basically the one the president laid out ten days ago and try to get their approval of it to up the pressure on both hamas and israel very interesting set of developments here. david, very, very briefly does this move by gantz not pushed netanyahu farther into the arms of the right-wing and israel it does he s got a very narrow majority s holding onto. he didn t need gantz s party to stay in. he needed kansas credibility to some degree that deal with the us and the rest of the world. but if netanyahu agrees to the israeli plan which came out of the war cabinet, not out of the political atmosphere and the coalition. he s put of european parliamentary elections being held across 27 countries we re seeing a major shift to the right in europe. the center-right european people s party now projected to be in the majority. protesters taken to the streets in paris sunday after the far right in france, scored an unprecedented 31 31.5% of the road. and the french president emmanuel macron dissolved parliament, called for snap elections situ in situation. one like it is a situation to which i cannot resign myself. the rise of nationalists and demagogues is a danger not only for our nation but also for our europe and for francis place in europe and the world. they don t all right, joining us now is cn an international anchor, max foster who joins us now, live from london max, good morning to you. this is a bit of a complicated situation for folks in the us who don t necessarily follow the ins and outs of the european parliamentary elections. but big picture is that we have seen kind of a across the continent these far right parties surging in a way that has really concerned the sort of center right? majority governing parties. and it so much so that you saw emmanuel macron take this pretty significant action. it s a risk for him to do this. why is he doing it and how does it help explain the big picture of what we re seeing here? hi, a lot of people quite baffled because off the back of a european election where in france at least the far-right, did extremely well he s now going into another election. he called it and it s going to benefit the right. many would argue because they can ride on that momentum, but he is effectively saying he wants to hand it over to the french people who he believes are generally moderate. and of his point of view. so he can prove that the european election, which is often a protest vote for european voters, won t actually hold in a national election. so a massive risk, and i think even the people closest to them realize that, but we ll see he, how marine le pen does out of that steadily over recent years she s been increasing in authority and power and she s doing what many of the european parties are doing, which is focusing on immigration. and ukraine and also environment. but on this basis that really resonates with a lot of people, which is that the cost of living is getting worse and worse inflation s going up. we can not afford to do all of those things. we have to hunker down a look at nationalism. and i think if you look at the overall parliamentary picture, then the moderate still hold it. but in the key country, the big economies, france, germany, and italy, the far right? excelled. so it s going to have a huge influence. yeah, we can put up on the screen for people to kind of see in color the way that this broke down in france. so let s set aside the yellow that s other, but that red piece which is clearly the most significant one for a named party, is the national all rally. those are the right wingers that 15% purple that you see the renaissance party, purple, blue. that s macron s party. and max, to be clear, we saw something similar play out in germany and in italy can you talk a little bit about how this strengthens the more right-leaning leaders who are in office in europe well you know, it s already got a right-wing prime minister. so she s empowered and marine le pen, as i say, he s been climbing steadily in germany. a lot of people would view that party. now the second most powerful party in the country as traditionally a very far right party. so it has huge influence because germany and france and italy are the three countries that have most influence over the european union i was interviewing a us expert based here in the. uk earlier on, and she was talking about how this will empower trump effectively. a lot of the wright was rising in europe before trump, but chump managed to popularize a messaging and they ve adopted a lot of that. so he certainly added energy to the rise of the right here in europe and it also means that the more senior these right-wing politicians become, the more contacts and power he has within europe. so it s very empowering to him and his foreign policy. he creates alliances specifically for him within countries which were traditionally us allies. so it has a it will have a big impact on trump if he gets into power and it will cause a problem for biden if it gets into power bi, it s going to be much less supportive of him and his policies going forward. yeah it s an interesting way to think about it. and i also think one of the things that donald trump has done that we remark on it, but i think perhaps not enough. and that is to normalize things that previously were considered out of bounds. and the politics and the way we re thinking about politics. and you can really see that in some of these right-wing up pushes, bringing things in that previously were considered to be verboten are not acceptable on our stages. max house. joel, good morning to you. wonderful to see you this morning let s start with the raid for people who are two doubt on a summer weekend, just waking up to this news, these four hostages rescued this clearly was something that i mean israeli families of hostages have been increasingly more and more upset about the fact that their loved ones have remained in captivity. what does this mean for them? yeah, it was a dramatic rescue without a doubt and have very high costs as you described with a palestinian loss of life what it means is that the israeli defense forces for a day for a moment, restored confidence in the israeli public about their capacity to deliver and to get their people out. but in the big picture, the best way to get israeli hostages out has been through deals, through a cease fire for hostage exchange, like one that we saw back in november. so a good day for israel, a unity didn t last long. obviously, the politics in israel very, very dicey with benny gantz. now exiting the coalition government. but it was something that the israeli public has been demanding. and now they want more action. they want to see the prime minister lean-in on getting a deal to get these hostages out. of course the toll here was very high in terms of palestinian life. it all so served to highlight some of the tactics that hamas uses talk a little bit more about where these hostages were found. and why there was perhaps so much collateral damage. obviously, much of it should be laying at the feet of the israeli forces that invaded here. but that s not the only thing at play, not at all. the case you re right, it was despicable. display of how hamas d values palestinian life. so many very clear these hostages were held in private civilian homes they were there for months and they were in the midst of what everyone in those areas new was a civilian areas. so israel, by finding these individuals, by rescuing them, it was clear that there were going to be civilian casualties. hamas doesn t care about palestinian civilian life. i i know we ve talked about this before, but this is perhaps one of the most a stark examples of that. if they cared about palestinian civilian life, they would be agreeing to the ceasefire proposal that has been out there and discuss secretary blinken s going out to the region to try to push for this, but in the meantime, hamas is embedding hostages in civilian areas with the clear understanding, this will cause palace let s see any civilian lives for a propaganda bonus may be for hamas, but i don t see how this is a real bonus for anybody in the middle of this conflict. they clearly are not looking at civilians as something to protect inside of gaza. so let s talk big picture for a second. you mentioned benny gantz, of course, announcing over the weekend and he s going to leave the war cabinet. he is, of course, someone that the us has really relied on in the course of these negotiations in this push for a ceasefire that president biden actually announced on a recent i ve friday. here s what jake sullivan, the national security adviser, had to say over the weekend. let s watch keith thinks the best way to get all of vestiges home is in a deal where they re brought out diplomatically, where there s no need for military operations to get every last hostage out. what we would much prefer to see is a ceasefire where the hostages come out peacefully. that is available. israel has said yes to it. now hamas needs to say yes to it. that s where president biden full effort, energy and attention is so bottom line, draw what s the holdup? while the holdup is hamas? the holdup is that hamas is i want to agree to a ceasefire that essentially pushes them out of the power. and that s the genius of this proposal, which is that it lays out a roadmap for preventing at the end state of resurgence of hamas in the gaza strip. and now that, that is, of course, very frustrating as well to the white house, because what we re seeing is the far-right ministers in israel s government rejecting that proposal as well. and now with ben against leaving the coalition it gives them a little more power in the near term, but it also puts the question to the israeli public. and i think this is why the president did go public with his proposal to get the israeli public to recognize the stakes, to put it back in the political arena. this question about how to end this war in a manner that we don t see a hamas resurgence in gaza and so the holdup right now is that hamas understands this proposal is against their interests and that s why we see the secretary going out. that s why it s frustrating that it s not yet done. but hamas, they re hoping for more days of violence, like on saturday where they don t have to make this agreement. and that means more palestinian lives are put at risk. machel rubin for us this morning, joel, always appreciate your experiments for being here all right, let s go now it is that it s tied. there s no clear leader, but there is a little bit get over movement toward biden compared to where this pole previously was. what does that tell you? it s pretty clear across the board that again, within the margin of error is and all of these poles we ve seen a slight polling bump four biden, and then a lot of the surveys were the vast majority of people say that conviction won t have any impact. there is 20, 30% of republicans who say it well, and remember, we ve been talking about for months and months it s in a month. this is a very tight election for donald trump to win. he needs to get more voters and he needs to get the last time. and so far, being convicted of a felony in new york is not leaving more voters for that. but again, all of these are the margin of error. it s like going from trump up to two biden up one that is essentially a coin flip election still. yeah, it is yes. very, very, very close. so let s listen a little bit to some of what trump had to say in this rally over the weekend because is there are a couple of things that stood out to us, including how the former president talked about, well, i mean, he he always uses very often inflammatory language about joe biden. but in this case, he was talking about suicide as well let s watch this du are there this is a front row joe. he said everyone this guy wouldn t it be incredible. he s gone to 250 if he voted for biden, even for by now, i don t think so. i think it would be suicide before by dry a bit extreme i don t know how a front row you thought about that. i think we re seeing that this is trump being trump, like they re even though there s a big conversation a lot about how much will they stick to the issues there s pulling out over the weekend that shows what a strong conjugation issue the economy is as opposed to conviction. and so can trump come out and just talk about the economy and immigration for the next six months. i think that little snippet shows that will been a challenge for some of the president s former president s advisers. they gotta to do that. yeah, let s talk about nevada specifically for a second at trump also was up there. this is sort of a typical line, but he said it in front of it. a crowd. again, it s a very heavily hispanic at stateless watch. what trump had to say about hispanic and african-american voters joe biden is also weighed. you re going all out war on the workers have america, especially african americans and hispanic in america i spanish americans and african americans are the ones suffering most with his incredible illegal alien group that s coming in so this is, this is pretty typical for how trump talks about this kind of thing. but i think what s going on in nevada is particularly interesting. i will say i have okay to a lot of sources recently who think that it actually may go for trump. this time around and it s part of it s part of the reason is because of some of the themes that he is talking about. there, there are a lot of workers that tourism economy, cassino workers, who in the past had gone for democrats who may actually go republican this time you hear this was a big, i mean, again, this is a point-slope election. there s a lot of things happening that people don t really understand because this is such a different election than ones previously. and i think one of the ones that republicans are trying to capitalize as those capitalizes, in row on minority voters with hispanic americans or african americans, as well. that s clear on the polling data that donald trump is doing better with those groups in previous republican candidates. and i think his campaign, his advisers, he, that is a huge, massive opportunity. again, the same way that if a small amount of those republican voters are moved by the conviction, if a small amount of minority voters are moved by some of the present former president s economic arguments that the election right, they ballot boxes? welcome to europe votes 202a. hello and welcome from sunny lisbon, where we are coming to you from today. i m mark lowen, one of the bbc s europe correspondents. and over the course of this programme, we will bring new reports from across the continent as the election gets under way. but first, what s it all about? elections to the european parliament take place every five years. it s the only directly elected institution of the european union. shaping the bloc s policies, legislation and budgets. voting happens by proportional representation. each country gets a number of members of the european parliament, or meps, relative to its size. the meps sit in transnational groups according to their ideology. so, for example, there s left and right, eurosceptics and greens. the balance between them could change considerably this time. and this is the first european election since the united kingdom finally left the eu. polling is taking place across three days, with different countries voting at different times. the first eu member electing its new meps is the netherlands. with an expected surge in populist and far right support, the dutch are still in the process of forming their own government after elections last november, which saw the anti immigration politician geert wilders win most votes. climate has been one of the most divisive issues with the country under pressure to reduce its carbon footprint. anna holligan has been speaking to young people on both sides of the heated debate. every farmer is a bit crazy because they work the whole week, role for europe to play there because what we see is the dutch politics, dutch politicians have a hard time trying to satisfy their voters and still commit to the paris agreement. and that s a shame because that s the bare minimum that we need to do. among many young people, there is a shared frustration with the polarisation that infiltrates the climate debate. farmers as well will feel the effects of climate change and we need the farmers, so let s shake hands on this. we both want to have a clear perspective for the future, i so i think no one has a clear solution to make one - clear policy in europe. in italy, too, conservative parties are expected to make big gains in election. brothers of italy, the party of the prime minister, giorgia meloni, is topping the opinion polls. she has moved away from a previously more far right position, moderating in office, but she still takes a hard line on immigration, one of the issues voters are worried about. and she s struggling to boost the flagging birth rate and brain drain of young italians leaving the country. as i found out in latina, just south of rome. the big beasts of italian politics are lining up for their european battle. and at this farm south of rome, which rears 1,800 buffaloes, the question is whether change is afloat. it s a very italian family business, churning out exceptional mozzarella and ricotta. the grandson of the founder says the problems are many, from european farmers being undercut by non eu countries to another long standing italian issue. it s not that easy to find workers. medium salary in italy is not going up for a long time. and this is very sad because many times, younger university students prefer to not work because of this. it means they employ migrant workers to fill the gap, and there is no shortage there, with new arrivals soaring by 50% last year, despite the government promising to crack down. so, at the centre for young unaccompanied migrants, more keep coming and the town is feeling the strain. it s ok for now. the numbers we are receiving now. but i don t know in the future if they will increase more, if it will be ok or difficult. you are at your maximum point, do you think? maybe. yes, i think so. they put together pieces of broken lives in a country they will now call home. it cost 2000 euros to get here from burkina faso. translation: lots of africans think europe is a paradise, - but it is not true. now i tell people back home to stay there, but i know they will keep trying, and even if italy wants to stop the boats, it is impossible. so the to do list is long for giorgia meloni, elected prime minister 18 months ago and still leading the polls. the main city here, latina, mirrors italy, with the same issues and the first woman in charge. translation: the meloni | government is working well. we have problems of the falling birth rate, for example, which affects all of europe. we used to passively accept migrants, but now we have a big say in managing flows. it is important that our party wins this election so we can put forward our ideas at a european level. behind italy s blustery beauty lies age old problems, but what has changed here in the last 18 months is who is trying to solve them, with giorgia meloni dominating italian politics and hoping to further entrench her position after these european elections. but well beyond these shores, europe s other right wing leaders are looking at her as a sort of figurehead, an example of what they, too, will hope to achieve. and so, a key moment for italy and for europe, a vote on how to navigate these rough times. well, across the eu, immigration, the economy and the environment are all big themes for voters in this election. that is also true in germany, the eu s largest economy, and with the largest population electing the highest number of meps. but abortion rights campaigners there say women s health issues are failing to get enough attention. 0ur corresponded jessica parker sent this report from hamburg. adriana volunteers to help improve abortion access. in germany, abortions are in reality permitted during early pregnancy, but remain technically illegal. when i read the penalty law, it really crushed me. because it really says you are still a criminal when you have an abortion. you can do it up until 12 weeks without being actually punished, but you are still kind of a criminal. and also, the law is written like they are trying to force you to think about it and to keep the pregnancy. so they are really pushing you in one direction. do you think this issue, women s health issues, have a prominent enough place in the public debate? of course not. women s issues are most of the time not the main priority. i would prefer if we had an eu law that ensures that everyone has access to safe abortions. even in wealthy liberal cities like hamburg, campaigners say women face barriers to abortion, while access across europe can significantly vary, from france where abortions have become a constitutional right to almost total illegality in poland and malta. abortion laws are set by member states, but in the last eu parliament, a majority of lawmakers called for access to be guaranteed across the bloc. it is a prime example of how some see the eu as an engine for social change, while others believe that brussels is already too interfering. it s up to the nations to say whether they want to have this or that particular abortion law, and the eu should not meddle with that. they have done that with other things, they try to interfere with nations sovereignty, and i think they should not push the nations too far. we have seen what happens when they do that, and when people pick up on those ideas in particular countries, you saw that in the uk, and they play it well, people may turn away on a larger scale from the european union, and that s not a good idea. this professor believes eu wide change is a distant prospect. i think member states- focus very much on having competencies in criminal law, and especially in these - sensitive areas of abortion. the eu parliamentary elections are nowjust weeks away. if, as some polls predict, there is a rightwards shift, that may diminish calls for embedding abortion rights. as parties push very different visions of how far the eu should reach into people s lives. from the chilly climes of northern germany down to the boiling beaches of southern spain, the increasing difficulty of making ends meet is playing big in voters minds. spain is the eu s fourth largest economy, but it has the bloc s highest unemployment rate at around 12%, and among young people, it is also top, at almost 30%. in andalusia, away from the tourist hotspots, the country s biggest region is struggling with low wages, high unemployment and a lack of infrastructure. nick beek reports now from a city where one person in every four is out of work. in a perfect world, 20 year old lucia would make a living doing what she loves, restoring furniture. today, it is this coat of arms. but it does not pay enough, and in her part of spain, finding anyjob is really hard. translation: i am working very hard to try to make a living - for what i love doing. i see my friends with full time jobs only making 700 euros a month. they take advantage of the fact we are young because they know we are going to shut up and take whatever money they give us. in the city of algeciras, these people face a tough future. it feels like a bustling place, but 40% of young people cannot find a job. the highest rate in the whole country. the sky high level of unemployment here means that there is huge scepticism that anything will change for the better after the european parliament elections in six weeks time. there are deep rooted economic problems, and despite the vibrancy of this place, success stories are pretty hard to find. but this is one. business is good at the repair company. a 230 metre long containership the latest vessel they re fixing. it s meant 21 year old mario has been able to get a decent job, something that has eluded many of his friends. outside of the sector, it is difficult to have a permanent job. the contracts they are providing, a low wage, short term, they take a little bit of advantage of the people to save them money. one of the bosses says he would love to take on more workers, but the problem is that while so many young people need a job, theyjust don t have the expertise. we are the highest percentage of unemployed people - here and those people, we cannot get with us, | because they don t have the skills. - this city boasts the biggest port in spain, but does not feel the benefits. the eu is sending 140 million euros to the region to try to boostjobs, which may or may not win votes at the european elections. but it feels much bigger investment is needed here, particularly in roads, railways and other infrastructure, to turn the tide for this young generation. and so, to france, often seen as the other half of the power couple driving the eu, along with germany. but it, too, is seeing a surge in support for the far right, the national rally of marine le pen and her young co leader has been towering over opinion polls at around twice the level of support of the nearest rival, the party of emmanuel macron. that could put the far right in a strong position ahead of the next french presidential election in 2027. 0ur paris correspondent hugh schofield has been finding out why this has all been happening, and he starts his report in a cathedral town around 160 kilometres south east of paris. they are on a roll and they know it. they, the national rally, are so far ahead in the french polls that their biggest worry is supporters like these taking a massive victory for granted and not turning out. that is why the president has come to this market town. selfie hell, of course. this is the new face of france s far right. he is personable, popular and above all, very young, and atjust 28, he is leading the national rally in these elections to new heights. circumstances are helping. inflation is hurting. 0ut here in the provinces, president macron is unpopular. and now there has been a run of atrocious stories of violence among immigrant communities in schools, in the paris suburbs, a 15 year old was beaten to death, seemingly by the brothers of a teenage girl angry that she was in contact with him. the case is not unique. for the national rally s newest star recruit, it translates into a popular demand for authority. this former head of the agency frontex says he was hounded out for trying to be tough. immigration is a factor in many of these cases of violence, he says. this is a cultural clash. the fact that some teenagers consider that their sister shall not talk to a boy, that this is a matter of honour, and this is not part of our culture. in france, it is not part of our culture. i m sure nowhere in continental europe or in the uk. back on the campaign trail, i asked jordan bardella where he thought the valance was coming from. translation: there is | a new savagery in society which means you might be attacked anywhere because you are not wearing the right kind of clothes or because you are in the wrong place at the wrong time. and now this violence is affecting the institutions of the state, like schools. his answer is to get tough, increase penalties, crackdown on illegal immigration. many, it seems, would agree. so, while voters in much of europe are focusing on their internal challenges, in some eu countries, it is what is happening outside or, rather, beside their country that is a priority, not least for poland, bordering ukraine, but also russia and belarus. although some other eu members in the east of the bloc, such as hungary and slovakia, have wavered in their commitment to assisting ukraine militarily, poland has been a firm voice against the threat of moscow. but there are signs of strain in its relation with kyiv and the conflict next door is having a political impact in poland, as our eastern europe correspondent reports. all along its northern border, poland is on alert. because on the other side here is russian territory that is heavily militarised. poland has taken the threat posed by its neighbour very seriously. ever since the full scale invasion of ukraine. its constant warning is that vladimir putin will not stop there, so poland now plans to spend millions heightening security. prime minister donald tusk is making russia a big issue of european elections. reinforcing the border is about telling the enemy to stay away. and in polish schools, new security drills. getting prepared in case of an emergency. first lesson, evacuation. the training is run by soldiers with the territorial defence. it s partly about building confidence in the armed forces. partly learning skills to cope in a crisis. the teenagers we met here had no doubts why they were doing this. we are in danger. i m worried that the war will come to poland. russia is near to us - and they could attack us. i think. but fearing moscow does not always mean help for kyiv, not to those who spoiled this grain for ukraine at the polish border. the polish countryside is often a place of strong feelings. not all of them positive about the eu of kyiv. not all of them positive about the eu or kyiv. this man has been farming since he was 18. but he says ukrainian goods are starting to flood the market here, undercutting local produce and threatening his livelihood. translation: it looks like ukraine is fighting a war on two fronts, one with russia and one against polish farmers. an economic and agricultural war. if this continues, we willjust perish. we have no chance. it s not the economy, though, its security that is poland s big theme at these elections. the message that living next door to russia remains a risk. and that all europe needs to remain on guard. so, those are many of the issues particular to each country, and here is a particularity with the election itself. changes to the law in some eu member states mean that this year, 16 and 17 year olds are able to vote. while in some countries, the youth vote leans towards the greens or the left, in many, there is an unprecedented support for the far right among young voters, which is expected to help those parties make significant gains. sophia sent this report from the heart of the european union, in brussels. in some countries, like belgium, the voting age has been lowered to 16. do you think that the european elections matter? yes. it s a very big - opportunity for us. and i really like it because it gives us a voice that - we never had before. europe needs to be stronger because we cannot always trust nato. my history teachers are really saying that it would not - surprise me if something i would happen in the future, so that really scares me. and my future and thinking about my children, my - future children, i don t have children now. - but more young people going to the polls won t necessarily translate into support for the eu. in fact, an unprecedented number of young voters are siding with far right, populist parties. the success of the far right among young people in part has to do with their positions on immigration or on anti woke. but also, with their very successful social media strategy, especially on platforms such as tiktok. they also have this very clear antiestablishment discourse, and even a rebellious vibe, that can appeal to young voters. that rebellion blaring out in the capital of europe. hundreds of farmers have come to protest here at brussels with their tractors. they have come from lots of different countries and many of them are really young. as voting gets under way across europe, they want to send a strong message that the eu just isn t listening to them. the reason why we vote for the right is that we have global issues that we don t know how we can take control of. we can actually solve the issues that the left tried to solve, but failed to do so. another issue that is driving them to the right is migration. there is a big issue when it. comes to security and when it comes to keeping in track of all of the people - that come in. so i think that europe does not have the capacity - to receive that many people. and that is why you are voting to the right? that is why i m - voting common sense. common sense or not, many young people feel that the more traditional parties are not listening to their concerns. and that disconnect is what could deliver the most significant victory to the far right since the eu was founded, more than half a century ago. so many challenges, and so much to play for. the 720 meps elected will take decisions on issues that affect all eu citizens, on everything from food standards to immigration, and climate targets to banking rules. and they will vote to decide who becomes president of the european commission, leading the institution for the next five years. the results are expected late on the last day of voting, sunday, the 9th ofjune. we it s been a pretty decent start to the weekend. there was a good deal of sunshine around across most of the country. a bit of cloud here and there, a few showers mostly in the north. part two of the weekend doesn t look quite as good. it will start certainly quite chilly. but we ve got a couple of weather fronts pushing down from the north west that will increase cloud through the day, with some splashes of rain. now, we ve got this weather front approaching the north west of the country to move through this evening. showers merging together to produce longer spells of rain for the north and west of scotland. so unsettled, breezy, showery in the north, turning cloudier for northern ireland, but clearer skies for large parts of england and wales, with lighter winds here. so it will turn chilly for most. single digits, i think, for the majority of the country. but with more cloud across northern ireland, we will fall to around ten degrees in belfast. so sunday, then, we ve got low pressure still towards the norwegian sea there, bringing northern westerly winds into the country. we start off with quite a bit of sunshine. scotland, england and wales, cloudy skies for northern ireland, south west scotland, in towards north west england, north wales. and that cloud, with splashes of rain, will spill south eastwards through the day. so it will turn cloudy across much of england and wales, probably the best of the sunshine across the far south west, and the northern half of scotland doing pretty well, with sunny spells. but there will be blustery showers here and a cooler day to come, i think, because of more cloud around temperatures of about 12 to 17 degrees. as we move through sunday night, that area of rain splashes across the irish sea, into much of england and wales, becomes confined to southern and eastern areas by the end of the night. so where we have the cloud and the rain, then, a less cold night here, 10 to 12 degrees under clearer skies. further north, it will turn chilly. we start to pick up a northerly wind as we move into monday. that rain slowly clears away from the south and east. it may take a while to clear the east of england. eventually, it will do. then it s a bright day for most, sunshine and showers. most of these across the northern half of scotland, where they will be quite blustery and a chilly northerly wind at that. temperatures, 10 to 1a degrees in the north, 15 to 17 further south, giving some sunny spells. and we hold on to this chilly northerly wind through tuesday, even into wednesday as well. before united states for, for some time this is a relationship that s important to president biden he needs strong allies and partners in europe. it s a relationship that s important to president macron. you who courted donald trump when he was president hosted him to dinner. i think it was in the eiffel tower so macron has always been careful to try to have a strong working on solid relationship with us president s, particularly now, britain is outside of the european union. france s it is one of the strongest partners, if you will, that the united states can look to to have influence in brussels within the european union there are differences, of course, between the two countries, but today, we ll be full of sort of ceremony and the symbolic nature of that relationship attending a ceremony at the de triomphe for a parade, dan to the elysee palace are working lunch and then back for a state dinner at the lee say palace in the evening. so this really is the french de, the french president, when you talk about gaza, there are obvious differences between president macrons position and president biden s position. a stark contrast can be seen when the international criminal court, the icc, called for the request for arrest warrants for prime minister netanyahu so and the hamas leaders united states, condemned that even there was talk from within the united states of the challenge to the icc but what we heard from france, which is a signature signatory to the rome statute, which supports the icc. what the icc is doing. and if there was an arrest warrant for prime minister netanyahu, if he was to go to france, then the french will be obliged to arrest him. if that was to happen so the french said that they supported the move by the icc. so clearly, president biden and macron the sea differently on israel france is much more forward leaning. i wanted to see a sea as far in gaza, but it supports the united states position that calling for an independent palestinian state are recognizing an independent palestinian stay right now is not the right course of action. and on ukraine as well president macron is more forward leaning down the united states. he wants to form a coalition of countries that will send international military trainers. military trainers into ukraine praying nato try to train ukrainian soldiers. know nato nation has done this. at least publicly, yet, and this is much more than the united states wants to do when macron has taught about this in the policy united states has been very careful to say no. that s not where we are on this. so will it how will it change in shape that? will macrons going to do is back as the push the united states forward, but we know that president biden is constrained not just by his own worldview, but by domestic politics at home. he is unlikely to take a strong position that france wants on the war in gaza. and he s going to be very cautious about how he approaches involving us troops, potentially on the ground in ukraine, the domestic appetite for that this is perhaps not in the same place as domestic appetite and frances robinson that joining us from london, many thanks well, back in the us, mr. biden faces mounting pressure from within his own administration to change you as policy over the israel hamas war, cnn s kali atwood has more almost a dozen us officials who have resigned in protest of the biden administration s approach to the israel-hamas war. i want us to abide by our own laws. there s a real disconnect between what we and usaid are saying and every humanitarian agency is saying why should the rest of the world look to is as a leader, are banding together to explore how to use their voices effectively from the outside. it s kind of like an underground railroad. when i was having questions about when it seemed like i cannot work on this anymore but what do i do? stacy gilbert, who worked at the state department for more than 20 years. so she turned to members of the group when she was considering resigning. now she wants to help those who are fighting the system from within if we can be a resource to help others find their voice find a way to try to affect some policy change that would be useful. gilbert and the others who have left the us government in protest, like alec smith resigned from usaid last month, are also in public events and statements to shed light on all they ve seen. know that i m no longer at usa and i can speak publicly and loudly about what is actually happening on the ground in gaza and i can try to get attention pointed towards me, but people who are suffering there now gilbert s resignation came after her office at the state department, which focuses on global humanitarian crises, found that israel was impeding the delivery of humanitarian aid into gaza only for the final version of the report to say that israel was not to blame what are the implications of a report like this for the us government globally? to say it undermines our credibility is an understatement and for this report to say, conditions in gaza are dating dress, and these organizations don t have the capacity is just patently false. it is absolutely dangerous and it is difficult to do the work burke but these organizations can do it. they are not being allowed to do it the state department says it stands by its final report. we want to hear their opinions. we want to hear the expertise that they bring to bear, but ultimately it is the president, the secretary, other senior officials that make the decisions about what the policy of the united states out of beep. but gilbert says that many of her colleagues still working on the biden administration s policy and are seeing the death toll of innocent palestinians rise. harberger, warmer officials say they expect resignations and descend from within to continue. and one thing we ll be watching to see is if the pressure that president biden and his administration are putting on prime minister benjamin netanyahu to come to a ceasefire agreement, can do anything to quell this mounting descent, this mounting frustration, but from our conversations with these former officials, it would actually take the biden administration cutting off the flow of us weaponry to israel in order to do that kylie atwood, cnn, the state department will that frustration is being fueled by word is that the united states is trying to get gantz to stay. what more you learning? yes. well, he last month has said that on the 8th of june today, he would resign if benjamin netanyahu did not come out with some sort of post-war plan for gaza. well, that hasn t happened. it s 8 june and it is expected that it s evening and around the 8:00 p.m. a. local time, he will be giving a press conference and all indications from the israeli media is that he will indeed carry through with his threat. now, what does this mean? what his party is actually not a member of netanyahu s code collision, which has 64 out of the 120 seats in the knesset. so it s not like netanyahu s government is going to collapse but good gantz s considered to be sort of one of the adults in the room and experienced military figure who was chief of staff for the israeli army later at defense minister, he is someone who is perhaps according to these ready media, trying to keep the government on an even he ll pull him out and that means sort of that sort of level of control goes and netanyahu will be under the pressure more pressure from the extremist ministers in his cabinet but fundamentally for instance, guns does not support the creation of a palestinian state he does not support the idea of palestinian authority, going into gaza to administer it in the post-war phase. so basically, the difference between netanyahu and gun on tone, not necessarily the actual action on the ground node guns has been in favor of some sort of rapid end, to this war, we have now beginning the ninth month
