Spring Roster Overanalysis 2023

The new phonebook's here, but since they don't list weight changes in spring there's even less than usual to glean from the updated rosters. The big notes: Jalen Perry is gone. Alessandro Lorenzetti moved to DL. Kalel Mullings is an LB/RB. Order of the positions seems significant? The new guys have numbers, and some of them have interesting weights. Also there were some position changes among younger players. So let's be thorough anyways. DEPARTURES One guy in Michigan remembers Perry. [Patrick Barron] The only one that wasn't announced already was cornerback Jalen Perry. Can't say that's much of a surprise since he barely played in four years, and when he'd get mention it was behind all the freshmen. Aside from his special teams work (see photo above), he did get in as Michigan's backup nickel last year, in non-competitive situations. Here's the the full list of guys not back from last year's roster, with destinations and years of eligibility remaining where applicable. Quarterback: Cade McNamara (Iowa, 2), Alan Bowman (Oklahoma State, 1), and walk-ons Peyton Smith and Andy Maddox Running Back: Everybody's back. Wide Receiver: Ronnie Bell (NFL, 1), Andrel Anthony (Oklahoma, 2), Matthew Harrison Tight End: Luke Schoonmaker (NFL, 1), Erick All (Iowa, 2), Joel Honigford, Louis Hansen (UConn, 3), and Carter Selzer. Offensive Line: Olu Oluwatimi, Ryan Hayes (NFL, 1), Mica Gelb, and Kraig Correll Defensive Tackle: Mazi Smith (NFL, 2), George Rooks (Boston College, 3) Edge: Mike Morris (NFL, 2), Eyabi Okie (Charlotte, 1), Taylor Upshaw (Colorado, 1), Julius Welschof (Charlotte, 1) Linebacker: Deuce Spurlock (Florida, 4), Ryan Zimmerman Safety: Everybody's back. Cornerback/Nickel: DJ Turner (NFL, 2), Gemon Green (NFL, 1), Jalen Perry (Unknown, 2), Jahre Fish. Specialists: Jake Moody, Brad Robbins, and Rhett Anderson POSITION CHANGES Everybody give a demi-yay for for Mullings being an "LB/RB" now. [Bryan Fuller] The big one everyone's talking about is Amorion Walker to cornerback. He's listed as a WR/DB on the roster. The big one that we didn't know about is Alessandro Lorenzetti has been moved to defensive line in place of Dominick Giudice, whose move to offensive line was known about last year. I don't know what to make of Lorenzetti. This program does try its deep depth at other positions sometimes, if only to get them some snaps, and Lorenzetti came in more of a raw frame than a football player. It probably means they feel Lorenzetti is years away from helping on the offensive line, and that they want to shore up depth at defensive tackle after moving Giudice and coming up one guy short at the position in recruiting. It probably downgrades Lorenzetti's ceiling a few notches, since deep depth positions switches are often the first step to irrelevance (see: Jack Stewart, Phil Paea). Of particular interest to me is Chibi Anwunah moving to tight end. Chibi was a super under-the-radar guy they found who's rumored to have Ojabo-level athleticism. Both positions require lots of it, but the fact that Elston was willing to let him try something else suggests he maybe preferred to focus on the almost-as-raw recruits he brought in. Kalel Mullings is officially an "LB/RB." Half-Yay! issued: Ya It's interesting that they list LB first; that position is suddenly stacked, while he's probably the #3 guy at running back if that's his focus, with a clear path to starting next year if/when Corum/Edwards leave. Micah Pollard moved from Edge to LB. This was something that happened during the season, since they needed linebackers, and he was always kind of a Jaylen Harrell-esque tweener. Noah Stewart moved from OL to TE. Stewart was a 6'7"/283 offensive tackle last year, his fourth in the program. With a redshirt and a COVID year he's got a couple years left. Probably nothing, but he also could be their Honigford this season. And for completion's sake, James Kavouklis is just a long-snapper now (lost his OL/ designation) and walk-on center Peter Simmons was moved to defensive tackle. He was a 6'2"/291 redshirt sophomore last year. [After THE JUMP: The new numbers, weight changes, twelves.]

Notes UA All-American. Twitter. Early Enrollee. Film: Senior Highlights: Hudl. Play of the week. The best Pixar film since their acquisition is debatable, but Coco makes enough of the lists that I think it can serve for some consensus. It is a brilliant film, gorgeous, deep, and almost perfect except for one unfortunate uncanny valley (Spoiler Alert). See, for much of the movie this kid who's traversing the Land of Dead is doing so wearing skeleton facial paint to disguise the fact that he, unlike all the rest of this realm, still has his muscles and flesh. And you're thinking: Did none of these (ex-) people watch sports? Sport fan brains are wired to tell how much meat a player carries on his bones if nothing else. Swap Steve Breaston's jersey for Jason Avant's, and you'd still have to get 100 rows back to fool anybody. The latest moment like this was in Michigan's spring game. Nobody had seen Amorion Walker, the early enrolled wide receiver from the sandal gap of Louisiana, and nobody seemed to have accurate rosters of who was on maize or blue, but nobody who follows Michigan recruiting had trouble identifying #4. They would have known, for example, that ever since this Southerner whose catching radius has its own zip code had the best 40 time (4.41) and vertical (40 inches) at Bama's June 2021 camp, Michigan had worked extremely hard to pry Walker out of Notre Dame's class, and that Notre Dame everything short of abandoning their most hallowed tradition (losing to a mid-major school) to prevent it. They also might have known that Special Agent Ron Bellamy played for Walker's coach, that Sam Webb was alerted by the staff that they saw this as a 5-star recruitment, and he should get be on hand for the announcement on (early) Signing Day (Sam's second visit to see Walker). That everyone who saw Walker play apparently agreed with the two winningest schools with the nation's best scouting staffs, but couldn't bring themselves to rate the guy higher than 3 stars because he looks like a twig. Then the twig teleported past Will Johnson and settled in the soft spot in Cover 2. Okay, we see it. Now feed the boy. [After THE JUMP: Can we pay out NIL in meat?]

So You Wanna Draft a Wolverine: Daxton Hill

Hello, fan of an NFL team. MGoBlog excruciatingly scouts every Michigan play, and scores them to inform our coverage. Since mi atleta es su atleta now, here we share what we're sharing. Quickly: Cornerbackish safety or safetyish cornerback who excelled at nickel. Strength to take on tight ends but not a hard-hitter. Draft Projection: Early to mid 1st round. He's a highly valued type of player who can fill a role in most secondaries, and once you get to the middle of the 1st round the guys who can truly change the course of your franchise are off the board and it's time to fill needs. Shouldn't fall out of the 1st round barring something weird. NFL Comp: Marlon Humphrey. A safety-sized cornerback who plays a lot of nickel that you can't shake. What's his story? The 5-star little brother of Ravens RB Justice Hill, basketball player, highest SPARQ rating of his class, Michigan had to fend off a late run by Alabama to keep one of their most desired recruits in program history. Emerged as starting nickel in 2019 and was an explosive presence off the edge while solving longstanding program issues with drag routes and slot fades. Development was slow as Michigan changed defenses and had an absentee safeties coach in 2020, prompting the most negative (of the coaches) film study I've ever posted. All issues went away in 2021 as Hill locked down the Nickel/SS job and prompted a running "They tried to edge Dax Hill, how did it work out for them?" gag as each week a different opponent tried to punish Michigan for playing Hill in too much horizontal space, and Hill proved it wasn't too much after all. Positives: Elite speed, acceleration, and agility make him an ideal coverage corner. Shuts down fades, versatility to move around the secondary. Football IQ went from being a weakness to a major strength in the last year. Readily takes on blocks his size and length suggest he shouldn't win as much as he does. Versatility to take on any role from OLB to FCB on any given play. Can get up. Negatives: Hill came a VERY long way in 2021—hat tip to Ronald Bellamy there—but is still pretty raw at times. Was a culprit in Michigan's early season screen issues, and occasionally got in trouble trying to make a play instead of end one. Better at producing tackles for others than making them himself in space. Can get to the QB on blitzes but tends to go for knockdowns; sack production is low for how often he gets in the backfield. Still a kid on the field and for real—Hill just turned 21—so projection required. [After THE JUMP: What others say, scoring, video]

Here's some welcome good news. The country's #4 running back and the state of Michigan's #2 prospect, West Bloomfield's Donovan Edwards, announced he's staying home in a ceremony at his school. Edwards chose Michigan over Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Penn State, along with a who's-who list of offers from national powers.
Edwards is both an extremely talented player and a huge recruiting win for a program that's had trouble landing top in-state players. He's both an early signee and an early enrollee, so we'll see him on campus soon.
