The Fermilab physics laboratory in the U.S. has tidied up its systems after security researchers found weaknesses exposing documents, proprietary applications, personal information, project details and credentials.
Fermilab, which is part of the U.S. Department of Energy, is a world-famous particle accelerator and physics laboratory in Batavia, Illinois.
Willis, who penned a blog post about the group's findings, tells ISMG that he sees poor security controls often on government sites, but the group's findings with Fermilab was surprising given its sensitive work.

India Fights Against Malware Targeting Power Supply

State-sponsored groups in China appear to be targeting India’s power supply by dropping malware into systems, according to online digital threat analysis company Recorded Future.
On Monday, the Indian government issued a statement saying it took steps to mitigate risks posed by the ShadowPad backdoor malware that the hackers are using.
Although the Indian government acknowledged that various power grid systems across the country were targeted in a cyber sabotage attempt, it did not confirm whether a massive power outage in Mumbai last October was a result of a malware attack.

NCSC says remedial actions have been taken
Security researchers said they found thousands of critical vulnerabilities in dozens of government-run Web services, more than half of which reportedly belonged to state governments. Most of the services had multiple issues that included exposed credentials, leaks of sensitive files, and existence of known bugs. If exploited, these lapses could reportedly lead to deeper access within the government network, as per the researchers. The issues had been brought under the notice of the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) earlier this month. Now, a top official from the National Cyber Security Coordinator (NCSC) said that “remedial actions” have been taken.

Parler is back, more than a month after a tangle with Amazon knocked it offline

By RACHEL LERMAN | The Washington Post | Published: February 15, 2021
Parler is back online after the social media site popular with supporters of former president Donald Trump was knocked offline last month.
Parler effectively fell off the Internet in January, when Amazon refused to provide technical cloud computing support to the site after the tech giant determined that Parler was not doing enough to moderate and remove incitements of violence.
The site was not fully functional on Monday, and some users reported technical glitches as they tried to log in and refresh feeds. Private messaging was disabled, but the basic outline of the site was live.
