performance because that thing about playing somebody who's famous and whose mannerisms were always sort of slightly strange — and there is something very mannered about that performance. but that's right because that's the character she's playing. what the film is doing is, the thing that aaron sorkin does. it's taking a political situation and personal situation and a showbiz situation and putting them all together, let's compress everything so in the course of this week, there's a story about her husband being unfaithful, there's the problem about whether or not america will turn its back on herfor her communism allegations. and there is a question about whether the show, which she has to do week in, week out, which is the thing that has made her the icon that she is, is going to be good enough to save her career. so, again, it's a contrivance, and, you know, the writer—director is certainly not above great, dramatic, melodramatic grandstanding, but i kind of enjoyed it. i mean, i thought that... what it managed to do, i didn't know anything about the background story about lucille ball at all. that's the thing. because i was going to say, does this resonate to a british audience? because she was so super famous

said i was singing it for her but it sure felt like that. i was just, oh, my god, because the first thing she did which she doesn't usually do in her later years, she came out on that stage and she sat down at the piano and started to play. i turned to my daughter, who was sitting behind me, i said, "she's playing." >> and you can see more of my discussion with carole king and the reverend al sharpton on "all in" tonight at 8:00 p.m. here on msnbc. you know, carole king co-wrote "natural woman" for aretha franklin, and she said that she tried to capture aretha's voice when doing it. she said a jewish girl from new jersey, what did she know about that? boy, did she capture aretha's voice. she said obviously aretha did it beautifully. let's listen. ♪ ♪

something, may not remember that we created people like ann coulter, laura ingram. i could go on with a number of -- >> how did you find them? >> we like to book, you know, i don't know. i drank a lot in those days, larry. we did like to book a lot of female conservatives. they were good press and good for the show. we loved kristin o'donnell. you cannot not like her. she is such a nice person. we have great clip of ben affleck on that show saying please, christine, shut up. because i guess she would just go on. she was known back then as the girl from salt, salt being the saviors alliance for lifting the truth and i guess that's still the schtick she's playing. so part of me for sentimental reasons is rooting for kristin in delaware. the other part is rooting for her because she's going to get her christian ass kicked in the general election.
