Lost and found: A tale of treasured memories

Whether attributed to age, memory or a bit of both, I frequently misplace items like my smartphone, wireless earphones, reading glasses and car keys, sometimes more than once a day. Although they eventually resurface - car keys being particularly elusive yet recoverable - the myriad of objects I have lost over the years is astounding. From the mundane, like shirt buttons and phone chargers, to personal items, such as earrings and scarves, the scope of my lost possessions is remarkable.

58,000 stitches of love

I saw Jun’s socks on the pickleball court. It was a beautiful pair of socks - hand-knit, multicolored, with a well-designed heel. As I was watching him change into his gym socks, he became aware of my gaze.

Password purgatory

I often forget my passwords. Remembering long and complicated strings of characters is a problem for me. I have so many passwords for various applications, devices and operating systems. Not only the required complexity of password construction, but the increased number of passwords that I must keep track of in my daily digital world can be staggering. For security and privacy, I am struggling daily to regain some control over my password’s structures. Passwords have progressed from a security purpose to a security liability, at least for me.

My conversation with a ChatGPT-4 friend

The global artificial intelligence (AI) market was valued at over 130 billion dollars last year and is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 37 percent from now through 2030, according to Grand View Research. There has been a pervasive fear in the current workforce that robots will replace many jobs. Job displacement fear is real and disconcerting. But it’s only a partial story of OpenAI. More generative AI programs are available among which is a therapeutic potential in conversations with AI.

My book club

It must be a sign of my age that I am invited these days more to memorial services than other types of gatherings. This time the memorial service was for one of the founding members of our book club.

Navigating 'Age of Artificial Intelligence'

My colleague Joe, an English Literature professor at a university recently expressed his concerns about students using AI-generated tools like ChatGPT for their assignments. At the start of the semester, he made it clear that such tools were off-limits for their writing assignments. Joe is not alone among my friends who told me the same feelings ? panic, apprehension, and indignation. College teaching roles have become increasingly complex in the post-pandemic world. Adding AI-generated tools to the mix only exacerbates their challenges.

Summer blooms in my garden

So much rain we have had. El Nino's effects are evident. The media has told us about the change in climate patterns that cause warmer-than-average ocean temperatures around the world. Flooded highways in my neighborhood are major news these days. Not enough rain last year and too much rain this year. It's hard to predict what nature will do to us next because of what we have done to nature already. Yet, in some ways, warmer and wetter weather has been positive for summer gardens.
