French hospitals pass second wave peak in intensive care patients

France's health minister warned that the number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care could reach levels seen during the first wave of the crisis a year ago.
Olivier Véran told French network TF1 that hospitals have already surpassed the number of patients admitted to intensive care during the second virus surge in November.
"The person that will develop a serious form of COVID will develop it after 10 or 15 days. If we reach the contaminations peak this week - that means that in two, three weeks from now we will have the peak of patients in intensive care units (ICU)," Véran explained.

Fake music festival organised via social media in Belgium turns out to be April Fool's joke

Riot police were deployed to clear a park in Brussels after thousands of unaware revellers turned up for a fake festival on April 1st.
“La Boum” was advertised on Facebook promising hundreds of world-renowned DJs.
The touted line up featured "Calvin Harris, Solomun, Carl Cox, DJ Snake, Steve Aoki, Diplo, Fedde le Grand, Charlotte de Witte, Tiësto, Skrillex, Martin Garrix, Afrojack, Flume, Lost Frequencies, Disclosure and 75 other Dj’s from all around the world".
The advert also details the absence of any social distancing. Quite the opposite in fact:
"No distancing or barriers will be tolerated. Come naked, kiss each other, make lots of love... let's bring back humanity into our lives, and dance till dawn!" the advert read.

'Today is a good day': Schools in England reopen as pandemic restrictions are eased

By June 21, the British government hopes to lift all restrictions on social contact. And the first step in that plan starts on Monday with the return to classrooms of schoolchildren in England.
Schools in the UK were forced to close their doors in early January as coronavirus infections spiralled out of control.
Children aged between five and 11 are the first to be reunited with their teachers, with secondary schools following in a phased return later.
Teachers and pupils will have to take two COVID-19 tests a week for the foreseeable future.
"The reopening of schools marks a truly national effort to beat this virus. It is because of the determination of every person in this country that we can start moving closer to a sense of normality – and it is right that getting our young people back into the classroom is the first step," Downing Street reported Prime Minister Boris Johnson as saying.

Fabric-mask makers in trouble as European countries favour safer surgical coverings

The Textile and Clothing Association of Portugal estimates that about 10 to 15 thousand workers are involved in the production of textile masks, with exports of these products estimated at around 18.8 million Euros per month.
"Our companies continue to export to other markets, but we have to consider that the French and German markets are very important markets for us and losing them will have an impact." Braz Costa is the General Director at the Textile and Clothing Research Center in Portugal. And he questions the quality of masks made of fabric available, prior to the ban:
"Countries were not strict regarding the quality control of what they imported. This has led to this situation now, to impose the use of FFP2. "

People struggling to find COVID vaccination appointments in France despite eligibility expansion

Around 6 million people can now have the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in France. Those over 75 can have their first dose along with anyone in a high-risk group. French authorities are hoping to have 1 million people vaccinated by the end of January, after a slow start to the rollout programme.
But people in certain parts of the country have been told the next appointment available for a vaccine is from March onwards.
Pierre Tattevin Head of the Infectious Diseases Department at Rennes University Hospital & President of the French Society of Infectious Diseases told Euronews that whoever is interested and within the criteria can now to book an appointment. And this strategy would filter out those people who decide not to take the jab in France:
